This was the thirteenth basketball victory for the Owls this season. The Varsity, in the first six minutes, ran up 22 points to Edgewood's 2, at which time, the starting five headed for the show- ers, dressed, and after a farewell glance, departed for the Winter Prom being held at the high school. The Jay-Vee team, with two Varsity men, Ruth and Shue, finished the job the Varsity had started. Micky Ruth and Gene Shue accounted for 3 7of the 90 points scored by the Owls. Jack Cobo was next in line with IO markers. CHAMPS OWLS WIN NORMAN GREEN AWARD Towson Catholic defeated the Seton Hall High School of Long Island by a score of 33-22, thereby 'bringing back to Maryland the Norman Green Award, symbolic of the North-South Catholic High School Cham- pionship. This game, one of many that will be played in t-he future, brings together basketball styles of the North and the South. The opening quarter found the Owls with a comfortable 8-2 lead and at the half time rest period still leading by a score of I6-8. In the third quarter, however, the Seton Hall basket-teers solved the Southerners zone defense, and barraged the baskets with many successful shots, and at the start of the last quarter were but two points behind, the score being 20-22. But at this point the Owls changed their tactics and played a full court, pressing man for man, driving their Northern opponents into many hurried and unsuccessful passes and limiting them to one field goal, while collecting ll markers to assure themselves of final victory. St. Ledger and Scrivener collected I8 points between them, while O'Brien and Bolton again played wonderful defensive basketball. Following the game, the Sisters of Seton Hall prepared a banquet for the players of both teams which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Our boys spent four days in Long Island and were received and treated like visiting dignitaries. This is the sort of spirit that should be carried to and from all basketball games. And next year, when Seton Hall visits Maryland, we, also, should show these Northerners what Southern hos- pitality means. Towson Catholic's three man zone and two man, man for man, proved Boys' Latin's undoing, as the losers were unable to effectively penetrate the de- fense and their outside shots failed. Bolton and O'Brien paced the victorious cagers by scoring l2 points apiece, while St. Ledger, Bermel, Scrivener, and Vaughan controlled the backboards throughout the game. ST. PAUL'S LAST MINUTE BASKET SINKS . C. St. Paul's Crusies out-lasted the Towson Catfholic Owls in a very close game at the Towson Armory. Towson Catholic using everything from a man to man, to a 3-2 zone, held the high scoring Crusaders to 20 points. ln the final quarter, with a iminute and i5 sec- onds remaining to play, Keigler scored on a set shot to put St. Paul in the lead. But 20 seconds later the Owls' Tommie Vaughan knotted the score on a beautiful set shot from mid-court. Pandemonium reigned! After an exchange of unsuccess- shots by both teams, Heubeck let fly a desperation shot which was partially block- ed by John St. Ledger, but the ball was not deflected quite enough, and dropped through for the game winning 2 points. Heubeck was high man, with 9 points for the Crusies, while, Vaughan came through with 7 points for the Owls. The final score being 20-I8.
