Q2 i, 7 F t sw gyda li Q This is our pre-season line-up, but Coach Al Barthelme made Coach Al Barthelme began organizing Hilltop manpower early in August in preparation for the Owls first season of organized football. For the first three weeks in August, Barthelme stressed basic formations and fundamentals. Finally, when the boys showed signs of mastering fundamental at- tack and defense plays, Barthelme opened the season against St. Joe Residents. St. Joe Residents, 26, Towson Catholic, 'I4 St. Joe Residents proved to be too tough a nut for the green Owl attack to crack. Starting out fast, St. Joe whipped across two duck soup scores which proved to 'be the margin of victory. Late in the final quarter, Chick Scrivener tossed touchdown passes to Anderson and Vaugh- an, but even after Vaughan added two points from placement, the game was over with St. Joe on top by l2 points. The team went into hiding the following week preparing for St. Paul's. Towson Catholic, 20, St. Paul, 'I8 Uncorking a brilliant passing game, the Owls rode to victory over the crusad- ers via the passing arm of Chick Scrive- ner. Ballhawk Hogan leaped on a Cru- sader fumble early in the first quarter to account for the first score of the go-me. Scrivener's pass to Hoeck, which incidently covered 5l yards, was completed with only fourteen seconds to play and meant the margin of victory for the Owls. Boys' Latin, 46, Towson Catholic, 24 Starting out fast the Owls led the mighty Boys' Latin l2 to 8 at the first quarter, but were unable to meet the fury of the varied attack of the Latins. Ander- son, Hoeck, Scrivener, and Vaughan ac- counted for a touchdown apiece. The ex- perience picked up was worth the whip- ping. Everyone looked forward to the St. Martin's game. Towson Catholic, 53: St. Martin's 'I2 Barthelme's Owls ran rough shod over Cl St. Martin's team which, like ourselves was putting in its first year of conference play. Owl backs, O'Connell, Scrivener and Parks ran wild against the out-classed St. Martin's grid team, scoring l2 points each. Owl captain, Bernie Anderson, added 9 to the swelling score, while, Hoeck and White came through in the last quar- ter with a touchdown apiece. 'sift - F- P' 4. if Coach Al Barthelme explains a complicated lateral play which he first used successfully against St. Joe Residents. Even water boy, Larry Donohue, manages to concentrate momentarily, as Barthelme shows pattern of play on the ground. Boys' Latin, 52, Towson Catholic, 20 St. Joe's Day gaime was called off on account of impossible playing conditions. ln the next game against Boys' Latin the Catholic offense started fast with Chick Scrivener lobbing a 45 yard pass to Bernie Anderson in the end zone. Vaughan added the extra point. ln the middle of the second quarter the Latin attack started to roll and amassed 26 points by halftime. ln the final half, O'ConneIl came through for a touchdown on a pass from Scrivener. The last play of the game Bill Haverstick hauled down a desperate Scrivener pass to score, but the vaunted Latin attack had done its work well, amassing 26 points a half to hand the Catholics their toughest after- noon of the season. The squad dug in and determined to do a job on St. Joe Residents. St. Joe Residents, 56: Towson Catholic, 26 On a sloppy field at St. Joe, the Owls put in a pretty rough afternoon. The resi- dent attack had attained its peek while the Owls were struggling along on an off dav. Call for water: Owl center, Hogan, calls time out.
