In 1919 Lieutenant Gommander Towers coordinated tne first trans-Atlantic flientz tne flisnt, oy a seaolane, lasted sixteen days, included several fuel stoos and was assisted oy SS destroyers and five oattlesnios servine as radio oeacons alone tne route. 0ver tne next several years, Gommander and tnen Gaotain Towers served as: Executive 0fficer of NAS Pensacola: as Assistant Naval Attacne to tne American Emoassies in London, Paris, Pome, and Berlin: as Gommandins 0fficer of USS LANGLEY: as Gommandina 0fficer of NAS San Dieeoz and as Assistant Gnief of tne Bureau of Aeronautics. wnile servina in tnis last assienment, Gaotain Towers increased Naval aircraft from 2,000 to S9,000, and ne initiated tne oilot trainins orosram as we know it today. As a vice Admiral durine World Vilar ll, ne served as Gommander Naval Air Porce Pacific Eleet, suoseduently as Deouty Gommander in Gnief Pacific Eleet and finally as Gommander Task Eorce SS. Pollowine tne war, Admiral Towers assumed duty as Gommander Eiftn Pleet wnile aooard USS NEVV JEPSEY in Yokosuka, Jaoan. Prior to nis retirement in Decemoer 1 947, Admiral Towers served as Gommander in Gnief Pacific Pleet.
