WOU’IuOlff,, I£iiXii£lfO£S When Mrs. Gibler asked me to be editor for Tolo, 1 was shocked and apprehensive. Although I was on the staff last year, I was still new to working on a yearbook. I also knew it was a great responsibility, but I took the job with fresh ideas in mind and a deep breath. I suppose every editor wants to try something different, and I was no exception. But Tolo was just out of debt, so we were limited on what we could do, such as cover style and additional pages. After we planned the book and put pages into sensible order, we got down to work. Through all of the rough drafts and messed up final drafts, satisfactory finished products were sent into our printers as close to our deadlines as possible. Everyone that was able to work on pages, did so diligently, and without their help there wouldn’t be a Tolo! Hopefully this yearbook captured all of the good memories and fun times that took place throughout this year. As the saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” and many of the most memorable but speechless times have been saved in this—the 1985-86 TOLO. Pam Peterson rl Mr. Lee Hcnncberry came to Toulon in September, 1952. For the next 33 years he taught art at Toulon High School and Junior High. Mr. Henneberry, for all the years you’ve taught and all the lives you’ve touched, the 1986 Tolo Staff proudly dedicates this book to you. 2 FAIiIi Faculty..........................4-7 School Board, Janitors, Cooks......8 Freshmen........................9-11 Sophomores.....................12-14 Juniors........................15-17 Seniors........................18-31 Senior Prophecy...................32 I Senior Wills........................33 Volleyball.....................34-35 Football, Cheerleaders.........36-38 Student Council...................39 Homecoming.....................40-44 Fall Sports Banquet............45-46 Mrs. Judy Beamer High School Secretary Miss Rae Elgin Librarian, Junior Class Sponsor . Some of the members of the class of 1986 shared their favorite pictures with Tolo. These pictures reflect good times, good friends, and good memories. They reflect the changes they’ve gone through. It’s hard to realize they were ever as young as Jeanne Perkins’ grade school picture and Sabrina Young’s baby picture remind us that they once were. These pictures are without names and captions because they are for the Class of 1986 and the memories within each picture will never fade. 28 -I 29 M© Wif Thongsane Phiosavang Robert H. Rennick Craig Schierer Mark Shinberger Brian Shults Lisa Swedeen Christine Ann Taylor Rod Webster Julie Ann West Sabrina Young 31 Dear Class of 1986, Since I am our class’ only journalist, our class president, Carol Beamer, asked me to update our classmates on what’s happening with the class of 1986. 1 gladly obliged, since I was also curious to see what everyone’s been up to these past ten years. I found Christine Taylor pursuing a writing career. With the help of Carol Beamer, Lisa Swedeen, and Debbie Doe, she’s writing a revised version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have three famous entertainers from our class. Alecia Harrington just finished a tour with her band, which featured Mark Goodwin as her lead guitarist. Rick Dienst is now with the “Chip Dale Dancers” of Chicago. Jeanne Perkins and Sherri Grieve broke the height barrier and became Dallas Cowgirls. Traci Frail and Jeff Gerard are co-owners of a chain of sporting good stores. Craig Schierer and Rich Dailey are their leading district managers. Steve Brown now resides in San Quentin where he awaits trial for 329 unpaid traffic tickets. Bob “Miami Vice” Rennick is defending Steve. Ken Hearold is prosecuting him. We have our share of successful executives from the class of ’86. Darryl Krause owns a sardine processing plant, while Kerry Copeland is head researcher for Purina. Joe Hulsey is now the owner of Blakey’s Car Care, with Toby King and Vanessa Oliver as his head mechanics. Thongsane is owner of central Illinois’ only professional soccer team. John Doran is now an officer in the army. Mark Lomelino and Todd Nelson have also found military careers-as M.P.’s. Tom Burhorn’s military career made him quite famous. He is presently Secretary of Defense and works quite frequently with former classmate and current C.l.A. director, Donald Gustafson. Richard Bowman and Brad Bryner became local policeman. Richard recently won the election for Sheriff. Wendy Lee and Mark Shinberger are getting ready for the next Olympics. They will compete once more before becoming professional athletes. Pam Peterson and her husband, Jim own a ranch in Colorado where they raise and train quarterhorses. Julie West became the advisor for the national F.H.A. chapter. She recruited classmate Sabrina Young to help. Jennifer Costin broke the sex barrier to become one of the first female advisors for the national F.F.A. Her first goal is to set up a farm colony on Uranus. Among the likely candidates to take on that challenge are Cliff Lane, Brian Shults, Rod Webster, and Tom Greathouse. Finally, Rick Clancy was entered into the Guiness Book of World Records for having read The Grapes of Wrath 4,257 times! Well, this sums up the activities of the class of 1986. 32 Until our 20 year reunion, Marianne Alexander SBXVIOR I, Carol Beamer, will my natural athletic ability to Robbie Eden. It was the first time that Toulon tied for or captured a conference title since 1957. We missed gaining a play-off berth by the flip of a coin to Eureka. After the first two games, which were nonconference, the team played exceptionally well, winning six out of the last seven games of the season. Mr. Eden explained, “This group of athletes got more out of themselves and played with more desire than any other group I’ve coached in the last 13 years. Being inexperienced and lacking size, the team displayed excellence both offensively and defensively.” With the Fresh-Soph capturing the LTC title, Toulon has a strong team to look forward to the next two years. 36 Kerry Copeland Rick Dienst Jeff Gerard Criag Schierer Brian Shults TACKLES RECEIVING RUSHING SOLO ASSIST TOTAL REC YARDS AVG TD ATT YARDS Bowman 39 41 59.5 5 34 6.80 0 100 540 Burhorn 21 21 37.5 10 199 19.90 2 3 -22 Dienst 13 11 18.5 3 49 16.33 1 Gerard 13 12 19.0 2 24 12.00 0 Greathouse 0 2 1.0 1 11 11.00 0 Copeland 10 15 17.5 1 1 1.00 0 Lane 3 7 6.5 Schierer 3 7 6.5 Shults 1 5 3.5 INTERCEPTIONS SCORING TD TD TOTAL 5 3 6 36 0 2 2 12 1 6 2 37 Assists count as half TOP: (Front row, LR) Jenny Howell, Debbie Doe, Lisa Swedeen, Maria Henneberry. Student Council is comprised of elected class representatives. It is an activity designed to get the students more involved in what goes on throughout the school year. Several students went to the Fall Workshop at Pekin High School in October. They attended discussion groups to get ideas for dances, school projects, and increasing school spirit. They also went to a District Session in March to elect new District Officers. Our council president, Chad Donath, was elected District President. They also discussed the State Convention, which was the first weekend in May and was held in Chicago. New state officers were elected, and discussions were held for activities that should happen during meetings. The last night of the Convention, a formal dinner was served and a guest speaker was featured, followed by a dance in the ballroom. They begin the period by picking up all the attendance slips. The 1st hour and the 8th hour runners make deliveries and pickups to the elementary school supt. office. The second hour runners go to the post office and bank plus run any additional errands that need to be done uptown. Other office runner duties include everything from running off copies for teachers to helping set up the football field for the game that night. They help get things ready for track meets, awards nights and do all of the attendance on the computer. They run phone messages to students and hunt down students who are needed in the office. This was the first year in too many years that the Tolo has been in the black. They raised money by selling ads, selling magazines and music items, selling pictures, and having a sexy legs contest. To sell ads, Sherri Grieve, head of the ads, split our large staff up in groups and sent them to Kewanee, Wyoming, LaFayette, Bradford, Galva, West Jersey, Elmira, and Toulon. During Homecoming Week the staff sold pictures. The sexy legs contest also was during that week. Our contestants were the senior football players. We had a few night meetings this year at Mrs. Gibler’s house where we accomplished much. For the first time in many years we had color pictures in the Tolo. We also had a good choice of pictures this year. We spent fifth hour working on pages so that we could meet our deadlines. A few of our staff members were amateur photographers this year. Thanks go to the Tolo staff members for selling ads and to the student body for selling magazines and music items. A special thanks goes to Carol Beamer for her art work on the division pages. The event was dedicated from the Juniors to the Senior class and appropriately themed, “Straight From the Heart”, a song by rock singer and songwriter, Bryan Adams. Music was provided by the band, “Midwest”, which helped to make Prom a very enjoyable evening. The perfect weather contributed immensely. The Juniors chose pink and maroon as the colors to help carry out the theme. Saturday, May third proved to be a night to remember, one full of special moments and memories. It was also a reminder of the moving on of our senior class into new directions, as they graduate from Toulon High School. It was a foggy and overcast morning, but spirits were high as we waved good-bye to T.H.S. We stopped in Ottawa around 8:00 for breakfast, putting the people at Hardee’s to work! We arrived at Six Flags at 10:30, the sun still under the clouds. But by the time we got our tickets and got through the gate, the sky was blue and the sun bright. All the rides were great and everyone had a good time, but all were ready to head home at the end of the day. We stopped in Joliet at Bishop’s buffet for supper, and “lost” a few in the mall! We were all glad to see the familiar sight of the parking lot when the bus pulled in at 11:00. All in all, it turned out to be one of the best days of the year.
