One of the many good things Mr. Zbrozek has done at the grade school has been to initiate the “A team, a program for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. This program has been very beneficial in disciplining the children. Most grade schoolers strive to make the “A” team each week. Those who did make the A” team received a special award at the end of the year. Superintendent Charles Zbrozek will resign at the end of the 1983-84 school year. He has accepted a position as Superintendent of Princeton Grade School. Mr. Zbrozek has been the Superintendent of Toulon-LaFayette Community Unit School District 2 for the past four years. We’re bad!” “Of course we work hard all the time!” “Hey dude! 26 Of course we’ll get first place—we’re seniors!” §enior Class history As forty-nine unknowing Freshmen, we came upon the big world of THS in the fall of 1980. Mr. Faull was chosen as our advisor. We participated in our first class officer election voting Jeff Orwig to be our leader, with Rodney Ott, Mike Krough, and Kelly Simmons as our other officers. Marj Fairfield and Eric Collins were our Student Council Representatives. Our first try at building a Homecoming float showed our inexperience giving us the 4th place position. Our first year ended with the resignation of Miss Skelley. In 1981, we returned as Sophomores. Out of the forty-seven members of our class, Tammy Becket was elected to preside, with Rich DeSchepper as her vice-president. Stephanie DeClerk was picked to handle our financial matters, and Jeanine Duffy became secretary. Marj Fairfield and Rodger Ott were our Student Council Reps. Mr. Robert Eden was selected as our new advisor. Once again, our float didn’t do so well giving us a 4th place finish. Taking drivers ed and ordering class rings was the excitement of our 2nd year at THS. We finally became upperclassmen in the fall of '82. Mrs. Kathie Gibler became our faithful advisor. Rich DeSchepper led us as president, with Stephanie DeClerk as his sidekick. Marj Fairfield was treasurer, Jeanine Duffy was secretary, and Eric Collins and Vince Moore as our Student Council Representatives. As forty-six juniors, our experience started to show. We made a big jump with our Homecoming float, the first place theme being—“How Do Aces Spell Defeat? T-R-O-J-A-N-S.” As a fund-raiser, we put in many hours selling candy bars to anyone who would buy them. The end result—an unforgettable Prom. Again we returned in 1983, only this time, as forty-seven wise and knowledgeable Seniors. Marj Fair-field was chosen to guide us through our final year. Rodney Ott was given the job of Vice-President, Patty Palmer as treasurer, and Jeanine Duffy as secretary. Renee Traphagan and Greg Reiner represented us in Student Council. We had Mrs. Gibler as our sponser once again. Seniors ruled at Homecoming with our prize winning float—“Vikings Have No Chance of Stayin’ Alive.” The end of our THS career seemed to be creeping closer as we ordered graduation paraphernalia, planned our class trip, and prepared for graduation itself. As we passed through the doors of Toulon High School for the final time, we all held our own memories of laughter and tears we shared as the Class of 1984. Class Propljecy It’s 2004, and here I am, a doctor practicing at Kewanee Public Hospital, when I walk into a critically ill patient's room. And who should it be? My high school principal, Mr. Harland. As I talked with him, he told me his last wish would be to see the class of 1984 together again. So I took the challenge of finding everyone. I started in Toulon. The first person I found was Greg Reiner, working at Blakey’s Kar-Care as a grease monkey. Also in Toulon was Roger Blair, the head photographer of the Stark County News. Joel Dalton and Lee Muckey were still living at home with their parents. After carelessly running a stop sign, I discovered Sheriff of Stark County, Vince Moore. Living in a suburb of Toulon were Kelly Simmons, Malia Plumer, Lisa Peterson, Brenda Frail, Karen Parrott, and Michelle Barlow. All of these women were married and had one or two children. The houses they were living in were designed by world-famous architect, Chris Mott. Moving out into the country, I came across Dean Hulsey, Rodger Ott, and Jeff Lane, rotating their crops, picking their ears (of corn), and spreading manure. When I returned to Kewanee I discovered several members of the class. As I entered town, I meandered onto a circus caravan, and among the tightrope walkers I saw Julie Copeland. Guiding an airplane smoothly down the runway of the Kewanee airport, I found Randy Catton. Coming off the plane I saw Kris Clancy, returning from one of her many business trips. Going to downtown Kewanee I came upon Richard DeSchepper, now a very successful businessman, visiting his broker. Across the street I could see Dawn DeBeir drilling the teeth of Kyle Wallace, who owned a 200,000 acre ranch and was very rich. Right next door at Tina's Shape Shop, I spied Debbie Schierer, who was trying to work off part of her 210 pounds. As I left town, my car broke down forcing me to hitch a ride with truck driver, Jerry Kenney. This took me to the next town, Suburbia where I came across Mayor Marj (Fairfield) Johnson. She was having problems; her Chief Computer Programmer, Eric Collins, had just retired. He was burnt out from stress, addicted to caffeine, and married with 2.3 children and 2.6 cars. Marj decided to hire Carmen Phillips to fill this position, and called in Van Mahany, a computer repairman, to fix the damage done by Eric. As I left Suburbia, I caught a glance of Lauri Milby assisting her handsome auctioneering husband. Jim Roark, Jeff Jones, Mike Krough, Doug Doe, and Harvey Dailey were living in various parts of the country. Although all were employed at different jobs, they were all fulfilling their duties as husbands and fathers. I contacted Rodney Ott and Wally in a Colorado home. He had his own business and Patty Palmer was his chief accountant. Tammy Becket and Rose Appenheimer were both successful businesswomen. I found Lori Howell in the state pen for physically abusing her husband. Her lawyer was Debbie Stodgel, who was usually a juvenile lawyer but took the case as a friend. I also came upon Jeanine Duffy here working with the mentally handicapped. On my way back to the hospital. I bumped into Jeff Davidson. He was still fantasizing about Stephanie DeClerk. Unfortunately for Jeff, Steph was happily married to Bob Weber. Finally after much searching I found Renee Traphagan serving as Supreme Commander of the U.S. Naval Force. The last person on my list was Jeff Orwig. When asked, he said he was simply existing. After finding everyone, and getting them together, Mr. Harland was brought to the high school gym and we all had a big party to celebrate his miraculous recovery. If you are wondering what happened to Melanie Bass, well that’s me, and I’m the doctor who brought everyone together and invented a drug to cure Mr. Harland’s illness, (and yes, he did live!) lExdiangr §tui ent BOELHANSSON — FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT FROM SWEDEN—1983-84 Toulon High School was proud to welcome Boel Hansson as a member of the Senior Class this year. Throughout her visit she stayed with Mr. Mrs. Warren Young. Boel was an exchange student through the American-Scandinavian Exchange Program. Boel participated in the Student Council and the F.H.A. during the year. She was also an Honorary Homecoming Attendant. We hope that Boel enjoyed her stay at THS and took home lots of great memories from the past year. She said she had a very good team with talent and skill, even better than she expected. The only bad thing, she said, was that a lot of seniors will be lost to graduation; namely, Jeanine Duffy, Kelly Simmons, Debbie Schierer, Tammy Becket, Karen Parrott, Deb Stodgel, Rose Appenheimer, Patty Palmer, and Brenda Frail. She said she was proud of their conference and over-all record, and thought they finished off the year in style, with a great last home game victory against Wethersfield. The volleyball team had very enthusiastic fans this year. They even had their own cheerleading squad. Jeff Orwig led the cheers, along with Vince Moore, Tony Buttvick, Chad Donath, and Jerry Kenney. 35 itfootball FRONT ROW—Greg Blakey. Bill Cline. Harvey Dailey. Doug Doe. Robbie Eden. Keith Lynn. The 1983 Toulon-LaFayette Football season was one in which featured a combination of high’s and low’s. Although the inexperienced Trojans finished with a 3-6 record within a 3-4 conference mark, a lot of good points should be noted! The joy of winning the Homecoming game over Cambridge should be remembered by this year’s Seniors who showed much poise and leadership throughout the season. Add to this the fact that the defense allowed a meager 99 points and played well all season, and ending it with a convincing season ending victory over R.O.V.A., should take some of the “sting” out of some of these close defeats. We were a much better football team than our record showed, and the 1983 Trojans should be proud of their accomplishments throughout the season, concluded Coach Eden. 37 djeerleabers Top Row: Lisa Swedeen. Usually, the Senior Athlete Section is one of the last sections to be completed because the Tolo Staff has to wait for all Senior Athletes to be photographed for the picture to be used in the book. However, the Tolo Staff decided to change the format this year, and placed the senior athletes according to the sports that they participated in first, instead of waiting and placing all athletes in alphabetical order. Sure, it is a little different, but we are sure that you will like it as much as we do. To all the senior athletes of 1984, our congratulations go out to you for a job well done. As a matter of fact, production of the TOLO was already started when school began in the fall with the cover design and theme already planned out. During the year, a few selected staff members attended special yearbook workshops at Western Illinois University and Eastern Illinois University to get ideas to use on this year’s book and for planning the 1985 book. To raise additional money to work with, ads were sold to local businesses and bake sales were held throughout the year. Once again this year, the whole school sold magazine subscriptions to help the TOLO. Even though this went over well, the TOLO still faced financial difficulties which led to a reduction of the number of pages in this year’s book. Hopefully, with the support of the school and community, the TOLO Staff will be able to survive these difficulties and build up to a bigger and better book in the years ahead. Thanks to those staff members who worked hard throughout the whole year; we were able to meet every deadline and send in the finished book by the end of June. 80 Advisor, Miss Patty Hough; Editor, Rose Appenheimer. §tu ent Council Back Row: Greg Reiner, Chad Donath, Vince Moore, Second Row: Eric Collins, Denise Hulsey. At the home football and basketball games, the band played with the junior high school and community members. This band, called the Spirit Band, also played at one of the Peoria Prancers Hockey Games. Two of this year’s band members were honored by being selected to play in the Western Illinois All Star Band at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. Congratulations goes to Marj Fairfield and Kris Clancy for being selected to play. This is indeed a great honor. For the past several years, the band has been struggling to build the band up to the number of members it used to have. Since the band has not been able to do this, the band is going to have a half-time instructor for the 1984-85 school year.
