Alone we are separate individuals trying to survive Together we are strength and iiiiiiiiwiimmiiiijiiii Dedication Miss Patty Hough, a graduate of Olney Central College and Eastern Illinois University, joined the T.H.S. faculty in 1980. While sponsoring cheerleading, teaching General Business, Shorthand, Typing I II, and Office Practice, she also took over the thankless job as yearbook advisor. This is our way of saying thank you, Miss Hough, for your hard work and dedication to the TOLO Staff the past three years. The 1983 TOLO Staff proudly dedicates this TOLO to Miss Patty Hough. 4 Caught at work Shock the Monkey” Tiny Bubbles Panty lines Laying down on the job It must be my new aftershave Tune me into the wild side of life I’m an innocent young child sharp as a knife. Take me to the garretts where the artists have died, Show me the courtrooms where the judges have lied. Let me drink deeply from the water and the wine, Light coloured candles in dark dreary mines, Look in the mirror and stare at myself, And wonder if that’s really me on the shelf. And each day I learn just a little bit more, I don’t know why but I do know what for, If we’re all going somewhere let’s get there soon, This song’s got no title just words and a tune. Take me down alleys where the murders are done, In a vast high powered rocket to the core of the sun. Want to read books in the studies of men, Born on the breeze and die on the wind. If I was an artist who paints with his eyes, I'd study my subject and silently cry. Cry for the darkness to come down on me, For confusion to carry on turning the wheel. Bernie Taupin Fleas, again! We feel that the athletes of the CLASS OF 1983 exemplify these qualities. To them we dedicate the following poems. May you always be inspired ... to stand tall in the sunlight, To seek out the bright face of beauty, To reach for the dream, the star, To see the world through eyes of tenderness, To love with open-heartedness, To speak the quiet word of comforting, To look up the mountain and not be afraid to climb, To be aware of the needs of others, To believe in the wonder of life, the miracle of creation, the rapture of love, the beauty of the universe, the dignity of the human being. Our life is not a mere fact; it is a movement, a tendency, a steady, ceaseless progress toward an unseen goal. To desire and strive to be of service to the world, to aim at doing something which shall really increase the happiness and welfare and virtue of mankind— this is a choice which is possible for all of us; and surely it is a good haven to sail for. Henry van Dyke Keith Track 38 Anders Track Rick Football When I was young, it seemed life was so wonderful, a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical. And all the birds in the trees, well they’d be singing so happily, joyfully, playfully watching me. But then they sent me away to teach me how to be sensible, logical, responsible, practical. And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable, clinical, intellectual, cynical. There are times when all the world’s asleep, the questions run too deep for such a simple man, Won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am. Now watch what you say or they’ll be calling you a radical, liberal fanatical, cynical. Won’t you sign up your name, we’d like to feel you’re acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable! At night, when ail the world's asleep, the questions run too deep for such a simple man. Won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned, I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am. —Rick Davies and Rodger Hodgson Are you sure there are twinkles in here? I’m a studbolt, and don’t you forget it! MISS PHOTOGENIC 1983! I only went out for cheerleading so that I could make pretty posters and meet cute guys. 39 -1 EYE OF THE TIGER Risin’ up back on the street, did my time, took my chances Went the distance now I’m back on my feet Just a man and his will to survive— So many times, it happens too fast, You trade your passion for glory, Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past, You must fight just to keep them alive. It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight, Rising up to the challenge of our rival, And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night, And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger. Face to face—out in the heat, hangin’ tough, stayin’ hungry They stack the odds still we take to the street For the kill, with the skill to survive— Risin’ up—straight to the top, had the guts, got the glory Went the distance, now I’m not gonna stop Just a man and his will to survive Football 1982 SCOREBOARD Peoria Heights 6-26 W Elmwood 20-0 L Galva 12-6 L Atwood 0-20 W Wethersfield 27-7 L ROVA 25-38 W Cambridge 14-21W Winola 0-51 W Alexis 0-13 W Back: Coach Simpson, K. Coach Eden said that all three of his captains led the team well and showed good leadership. They spent extra time with the team prior to the opening practice, which proved to be invaluable as the season progressed. “Their leadership rubbed off on the rest of the team and gave them more confidence as a unit,” said Coach Eden. The team had a 6-3 overall record and a 6-2 record in the Lincoln Trail Conference. That was good enough to give them the second place title. “Without the able assistance of Assistant Coach Jim Simpson who coordinated the offensive and defensive lines, the season wouldn’t have been as successful, said Coach Eden. I was disappointed, but proud. I wanted to be in the play-offs. I am proud of working with the varsity. I wish we had the attitudes of this varsity squad, especially the seniors, every year. The banquet is held to honor those participating in fall sports; namely, football, volleyball, and cheerleading. The Banquet was well attended this year, and Coaches Eden and Carstens presented the football awards. Mrs. Carstens presented cheerleading awards, and Miss Anthony presented volleyball awards. Boys Basketball VARSITY—Left to Right: Jeff Jones; Sam Frail; Kirk Schmidt; Mike Krough; Carl Ryan; Eric Collins; Dean Hulsey; Greg Peterson; Lawrence Catton; Doug Doe; Coach Gary Blessman. Front—L to R Managers Mike Perkins and John Orwig. SCORES The varsity boys had an up and down season this year. Coach Blessman called his team, a funny group, so upredictable.” The varsity squad had five senior members. Lawrence Catton, Sam Frail, Carl Ryan, and Kirk Schmidt have played for the Trojans for all four years of high school. Greg Peterson came out his senior year only. Coach Blessman had the following comments about the senior basketball players. “I expected too much from Kirk, at first, but he ended up having a great year. Lawrence was always there when we needed someone to take control; he should have been All-Conference. Sam was the most pleasant surprise of the year. He played far above his head in some games; he was a great asset to the team. Carl Ryan was the difference between winning and losing in many games, especially in our victory against Wethersfield. It is a tribute to Greg that he learned the offenses and defenses of our squad since this was his first year out.” Juniors Doug Doe, Eric Collins, and Jeff Jones saw a lot of playing time and each was an integral part in the team’s victories. They, along with juniors Mike Krough and Dean Hulsey, will be the nucleus of next year’s team. The over-all record for the varsity was 10-15. The figures may be deceiving, however. In the past, a separate squad of cheerleaders was composed of freshman and sophomore girls to cheer for the boys’ Frosh-Soph 1982-83 Basketball Cheerleaders Left to right: Dena Webster. Kathy Basketball games, and a squad was compos-Shaner, Tammy Rennick, Stephanie DeClerk. Denise Hulsey, Jody gd Qf junj and senior jr|s tQ cheer for the Knudsen, Dena Saltsman ... , . Varsity Boys games. This year there was one squad for both teams. One of the major reasons for the change has been the impact of girls sports. As Toulon High is facing declining enrollments, there has been a shortage of girls available for cheerleading. Many of the girls are choosing to participate in competitive sports such as volleyball and basketball instead of cheerleading. As there was just one squad comprised of seven girls, the squad cheered for the second half of the frosh-soph basketball games, and then cheered for the varsity game. The girls felt that this squad was very successful in this concept, and this type of concept will be used again for the 1983-84 football and basketball season. At first, there were many hard feelings concerning the one-squad system, but the fresh-soph boys’ basketball team should be commended for their tremendous help. They were very beneficial in getting the crowd to cheer for the varsity games. There will be three seniors lost to graduation this year. They are Tammy Rennick, Dena Saltsman, and Kathy Shaner. They will be greatly missed. Tammy has been a cheerleader at Toulon High School all four years of her high school career. 53 Bovs Track Back Row L-R: Coach R. Eden; Statistician T. Rennick; E. Kyle Wallace won the 100 meter dash and placed second in the long jump. Lawrence Catton won both the 110 meter high hurdles and the 330 meter low hurdles. Kirk Schmidt won the shot put and Tony Buttvick placed third in the long jump. The 400 meter relay team of Tim Scheuermann, Lawrence Catton, Kirk Schmidt, and Kyle Wallace and the 800 meter relay team of Tim Scheuermann, Lawrence Catton, Kirk Schmidt, and Tony Buttvick, both took second place. The team didn’t do as well as they had hoped at the District meet in Sherrard, but there were a few performances well worth mentioning. Kirk Schmidt placed third in the shot put behind Tom Shertz and Bill Moretz of Tiskilwa. Lawrence Catton placed fourth in the 330 meter low hurdles and the 400 meter relay team of Tim Scheuermann, Tony Buttvick, Kirk Schmidt, and Kyle Wallace placed fifth. Kirk Schmidt won the most points of the season and Lawrence Catton was voted honorary captain. We worked, we played —but for four years? Then we look the other way —into tomorrow. Suddenly we’re not as tall as we thought we were and not so smart. But we find that somehow we learned a decisive lesson at Toulon something we wouldn’t have had without teachers and parents, without our friends —a direction into an uncertain tomorrow. It can never be so dark again— Though the world may change and we change and the times that we thought were the best, change. 76 f|a.'6 'V«4ouo j +I ig LL SPJ W jsei snoiuej 78 They say do your best But don’t cause a fuss Don’t make waves be like the rest of us But I can feel the tide is turning fast And deep inside I know that I can’t last Another day not another day ’cause I'm O.K. The Spirit band, comprised of Jr. High and Sr. High students and members of the community, played during the football and basketball games. Many hours of practice were put in by the band members. The high school band will be losing three members to graduation this year. They are Doug DeSchepper, Jordan Jones, and Teresa Keller. Several honors were awarded to band members this year. Jordan and Doug were selected to Who’s Who in American Music. There is a large enrollment in the grade school and Jr. High bands. The Toulon Chapter of the Future Farmers of America is one of the most active organizations in the school. The group has held several successful money-making projects this year. Some of these include their annual bar bait sales, garden seed sales, and a tree sale. The FFA’ers also held a hog roast supper before the Toulon-Alexis varsity football game and a butterfly pork chop supper before the Toulon-Wethersfield Boy’s Basketball game. The chapter is always taking members to FFA-sponsored contests. The group was involved in parliamentary procedures contests, speech contests, farm management, farm mechanics, and crop contests. At the Section V Livestock and Dairy Judging Contest held at Illinois State University in Normal on May 5, the Livestock Judging team placed first overall—the first trophy since 1968. Jeff Lane placed first over-all, Rodd Ott 2nd, and Jim Roark 9th to boost the team to first place standing. The Dairy team was also successful, placing 7th over-all. The Chapter concluded their very successful year with their annual banquet and slave sale. Jr. Officers: Sponsor; Mr. Jim Howard, Tom Greathouse, Cliff Lane, Jennifer Costin, Jim Gillam, and Brian Shults. 85 FFA BANQUET The Future Farmers of America annual banquet was held April 21 in the Toulon Grade School Gym. Award winners for the 36th annual banquet were Rick Rumbold, Carl Ryan, Jennifer Costin, Doug and Rodney Ott, Tim Or-wig, Rodney Webster, Ken Meaker, Steve Brown, and Keith Shults. Doug Parrott and Larry West, officers of the State Bank of Toulon, and Randy Mock of the Toulon Locker were recipients of the FFA Certificate Awards. Honorary chapter farmer awards were presented to Don Orwig, John Ryan and Raymond Rumbold. Speaker for the banquet was Mr. Monte Anderson, Director of Agriculture at Black Hawk East College in Kewanee. The chapter’s slave sale followed the banquet. 86 87 This year the F.H.A. did many very interesting things. First off we would just like to say thanks to Miss Jepsen, who took over after Mrs. King took her maternity leave. Miss Jepsen has fit in and become a faithful leader. Our activities this year were also alot of fun for all who participated. We planned to go to the 2nd Chance again this year, but we had eleven people show up and only one person was willing to drive, so we all went to the Saltsman house for a Pizza Party. We went bowling and took our fathers. We went ice skating in Peoria. Had our picnic in Kewanee and gave our seniors a farewell at Jimals in Toulon. In May we had our annual mother-daughter banquet and tried something new. We had a SLAVE SALE. It all worked out very well and we made a nice sum of money. Other fundraisers included, Pizza Sales, and Cheese and Sausage Sales. And finally, with help from the F.F.A. we put on the 1983 F.H.A.-F.F.A. Sweetheart Dance. It was a big success and it was cheap. We decorated the gym with bales of straw and other material made by the F.F.A. boys. The band was the Rivercity Outlaws, and they provided that good ole’ country music that made our western dance a success. Top row: M. George. P. Kraklow, W. Lee. S. Storey, 6th row: J. Perkins, V. The Student Council was very active this year. Homecoming was a great success. The Homecoming Parade was the largest it has been in quite a few years. Skit night was well attended and had a few distinguished guests, including the Great Cognac. The council tried something new and had a disc jockey instead of a band for the dance. The D.J. was so well received that the council decided to sponsor the first annual T.H.S. Christmas dance, also with a disc jockey. Quite a few people caught dance fever that night. The Student Council attended a district workshop, a district convention, and the IASC convention this year. The council was very fortunate to have Anders Westbom, an American Scan-danavian exchange student as an honorary member. TOLO Staff The TOLO Staff is probably the most “taken for granted” student organization at THS. Most students do not realize the many tasks that must be performed before the actual completion of the TOLO. Some people actually compare producing a yearbook to setting up a small business for a year. When school started in the fall, the TOLO staff was already busy trying to get their deadlines set up, the theme for the yearbook decided on, the cover design, etc. Orders were taken to determine the number of copies of the 1983 TOLO to be printed. Advertisements were sold to raise additional money to work with. Also, picture dates were set up with the photographer so that underclassmen pictures and group pictures could be taken. In order to be able to meet all of these deadlines, meetings were held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 to get this work completed. When school was dismissed in May, TOLO staff members were still hard at work, trying to finish up track, graduation and the spring sports banquet. The book was not actually completed until the end of June. Even though the 1982-83 book was not completed, ideas were steadily coming through for the 1983-84 yearbook. Rose Appenheimer and Tammy Becket, Co-Editors for the 1984 yearbook, have been brainstorming for new themes and ideas to make the 1984 book different from the 1983 yearbook. Thanks goes to all those who stuck it out and helped make this yearbook such a success. We hope that you, the student body and faculty, find that this book helps depict the life of Toulon High School during 1982-83. Staff Lto R: D. Stodgel, T. Becket, T. Rennick, R. Appenheimer. M. Referees call time; musicians mark time; historians record time; loafers kill time; statisticians keep time. But no matter how people relate to time, the fact remains that all of us are given the same amount of time. There are only 24 hours per day, 168 hours per week. Don’t cross that line. Fa-La-La We’re from the land down under The Athletes’ Foot I’ve lost my marbles! 107 108 On Friday, April 8, Toulon High School held an assembly for a flag presentation by Mr. Lane Evans, a U.S. Congressman from the 17th Congressional District in Illinois. This flag had been flown over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. on March 22 at the request of Congressman Evans. Mr. Harland had requested that Mr. Evans come to Toulon High School to present the flag. Earlier in the year, Congressman Evans presented a Flag to AlWood High School during the AlWood-Toulon Basketball game. During the assembly, Congressman Evans answered questions from the student body and faculty. Mr. Evans was impressed with THS; our school had asked the most questions during the question-and-answer period than any other school he has visited. (Little did he know that Mr. Eden’s classes were being awarded extra credit points for asking questions). As well as anyone can remember, this was the first time that a U.S. Congressman has visited THS. 109 '•OOPS!” Rock a by baby on the tree top, when the wind blows, the cradle will rock. Just let this end. Please! Editor's Page 1983. A record year. As I think about it, this year has been a year of more than just records. It has been a year that was filled with happiness, sadness, victories, defeats, and even some draws. I would, however, like to think that the 1983 school year has been a record year for the yearbook staff. I may be biased because I happen to be the editor for this remarkable organization, but if any other organization leader can prove that their organization has worked harder and accomplished more than my people” I would be quite surprised. The 1982-83 yearbook staff started out like any other past staff—45 members and 10 workers. I’m not complaining!!! The ten or fifteen dedicated people I had were quality people. They would and could accomplish any task I asked them to do. It was an odd day that any of them questioned my motives however bizarre some of them may have been. They had entries in the homecoming parade, held bake sales, walked around in the dead of night trying to sell “TOLO tumblers”, sold ads to businesses in our own community and other surrounding communities, sold yearbooks to the students of THS, and did any other weird thing that I could think of. I am forever indebted to them all. This yearbook couldn’t have even come close to the book that it is without the advice, patience, guidance, and never failing optimism of Miss Patty Hough. I know that in probably every yearbook, somewhere along the line the yearbook advisor is given a thank-you of some kind whether they deserve it or not. This is not the case at Toulon. Our advisor is as dedicated as they come. I am not ashamed to say that I am glad I won’t be around to face the financial difficulties that she and her future editors will have to face. I do, however, have complete confidence that if anyone can get the TOLO out of debt she will be the one to do it. This year has been a record year for me personally as well. I consider myself to be a lightly over-involved person. At the beginning of the year I seriously doubted whether or not I could handle all of my activities and do some occasional homework as well. I discovered that is possible to attend school on a sporadic basis, keep up your grades, manage the yearbook, work for the State Board of Education, be a cheerleader, and be a human being. Of all the things that I had to do this year, being a human being was the most difficult to handle. Being away from school tends to make you out of touch with the daily goings on. After a while, however, I began to learn that maybe the things that I once thought were so important weren’t important at all—just time consuming. If I could leave any advice to the future editors of the TOLO, it would be to delegate your authority, and discover where your priorities are. I wish my friends in the class of '83 all the happiness in the world and peace of mind. To all of the future students of Toulon High School, I wish the courage to be individuals. 1)4 No Man’s Land Headin’ in or headin' out Standing on the shore Pause a moment to reflect Which trip costs you more Between the ever restless crowds And the silence of your room Spend an hour in no man’s land You’ll be leaving soon Victims come and victims go There’s always lots to spare One victim lives the tragedy One victim stops to stare And still another walks on by Pretending not to see They’re all out there in no man’s land ’Cause it’s the safest place to be But sanctuary never comes Without some kind of risk Illusions without freedom Never quite add up to bliss The haunting and the haunted Play a game no one can win And by dawn they’re gone again. And so it seems our destiny To search and never rest To ride that ever changing wave That never seems to crest To shiver in the darkest night Afraid to make a stand And then go back and do our time Out there in no man’s land v 1 I 1 1 I j£T%vjiaU.
