THE 1978 TOLO STAFF PROUDL Y PRESENTS “ON THE ROAD TO FIND OUT” TOULON HIGH SCHOOL TOULON, ILLINOIS ON THE ROAD TO FIND OUT O Our day by day experiences are sometimes called the highway of life. Each new day is unique because it brings something totally different than the day before. The four high school years are especially important because in them we are growing, maturing, and learning. We think we know it all, but really we know very little. As we grow from the freshman to the senior year, we are faced with many problems about which we are quite unsure. We are faced with important decisions which will affect us greatly. High school is not just an academic experience. It is a learning and developing experience, also. We are all searching, looking, waiting . .. We are each on the road to find out. JCT , •_ - ILLINOIS Dedication The 1978 TOLO Staff proudly dedicates this yearbook to someone who is very special to us. This person has been a member of the faculty at THS for ten years, and in those ten years she has taught typing and other business related courses. She has been our TOLO advisor for two years, and in that time she has worked with us and spent many long hours after school just for us. Many times we forgot to say “thank you” for all the things she did for us, so this is one way we can show our appreciation to her. Therefore, we are honored to dedicate this 1978 TOLO to our advisor, Mrs. Jane Johnson. 3 4 A D MINIS TRA TION AND FACULTY A major part of everyone's journey through life is school. The word “school” means different things to different people, but when we consider this word, the things that come to our minds are teachers and administrators. In any journey by car, you may run across a policeman at a busy intersection; or in a crowded parking lot you may see someone showing people where to park their vehicles. The job of these people is to enforce rules and direct traffic. Therefore, we feel it is appropriate to say that the traffic directors of Toulon High School are our administration and faculty. 5 Administration Mr. Roland Kruger, Principal. Various events occur throughout the year that break the monotony. Some of these are homecoming, the all school play, FHA formal, musical, and that one thing all seniors look forward to, graduation. These activities provide the opportunity for socialization, recreation, and a break from the academic aspect of school. These activities provide a type of rest area in the lives of students at Toulon High School. Every athlete wants to win, but there is only one way that this can be accomplished. It is through determination, perseverence, and the desire to give all that one has to one cause that makes a person a winner whether he is successful or not. For these reasons, athletics is important in the development of a person in his journey through life. 35 Varsity Football BACK ROW: Coach Eden, E. Curry, M. Rossell, Doug Orwig, D. Jenkins, B. MR. JAMES SIMPSON Class Sponsor SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1974, sixty-four incoming freshmen entered the doors of THS for the first time as students. We elected the following officers: Mary Zaehringer, President; Linda Herget, Vice-President; Linda Kraklow, Treasurer; Karen Webster, Secretary; Judy Lingwall, AFS; and Mark Simpson and Andy Callahan, Student Council Representatives. Our sponsor was Mrs. Caroline Kidd. Our homecoming float received last place, but we gave it our best and were really proud of our pink panther. Sixty-seven sophomores returned in 1975. Our officers were Judy Lingwall, President; Linda Herget, Vice-President; Linda Kraklow, Treasurer; Pam Frail, Secretary; Sheila Henderson, AFS; and Debbie Rashid and Mary Zaehringer, Student Council. Mr. Jim Simpson took over as our class sponsor. This year we got third place on our homecoming float, but the highlights of the year were learning to drive and ordering class rings. In the autumn of '76 sixty-five students officially became upperclassmen. Officers were Brad Wilson, President; Linda Herget, Vice-President; Bob Walker, Treasurer; Jenny Eden, Secretary; Debbie Foutch, AFS; and our Student Council Representatives, Denise Price and Phil Webster. We again placed third on our homecoming float. Mr. Simpson, looking much older after having worked with us for a year, was still our sponsor. The highlight of our junior year came in May when we put on the prom for the class of ’77. On August 29, 1977 there was excitement in the air. We had finally made it. We were seniors. Our leaders were Andy Callahan, President; Jenny Eden, Vice-President; Bob Walker, Treasurer; Linda Kraklow, Secretary; and Mark Olson and Brian Eble, Student Council. Mr. Simpson was again our sponsor, and again we received third on our float. The year went by so unbelievably fast, and before we knew it, graduation was upon us. Our high school venture is now over and we must tackle the outside world. Good luck to the class of 1978.We hope all your dreams come true. 74 Senior Personalities 75 MOST SCHOLASTIC: Mary Zaehringer and Doug Blakey. MOST ATHLETIC: Mark Simpson and Belinda Schmidt. MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED: Debbie Foutch, Andy Calla- MOST ARTISTIC: Pat Nelson and John Dunn, han, and Linda Herget. 76 Classes Yesterday is gone, and obviously we cannot relive it. It is the same way with high school life, it is divided into four different classes. Each is different—filled with new experiences, problems, joys, successes, and failures. These four classes are a very unique part of the journey through life. Just as yesterday cannot return, these precious parts of life cannot either. One of the rules of life is that you cannot turn back. In life, there is No U Turn. 77 Junior Class Lisa Barnes Barb Beach Jack Bitting Bonnie Blevins Pat Cecil Mike Cecil Matt Chamberlain John Cinnamon Kelley Corbin Ed Curry Ron Dalton Diana Davis Jill Dorsey Mary Eble Scott Fairfield Kathy Fargher Kris Fussner Ron Gillam Kathy Grigg Dan Gustafson Paula Hackwith Irene Hepner Kevin Hoffman Laurie Hollis Vickie Howard Carolyn Huffman Carol Ingels George Jackson Tammy Jackson Teresa Jagers 78 Many Paths To Choose Doug Jenkins Tina King Candy Krantz Colleen Lahr Tony Lee Susan Loomis Kathy Mahony Dianne Main Mary McDermand Tim Milroy Vicki Morrell Keith Mortimer Gloria Musselman Larry Odom Doug Olson Dana Orwig Ron Ott Dwaine Ouart Cheryl Parker Bruce Patterson Jim Peterson Brian Rashid Sherry Rediger Shelley Reed Joyce Renard Joyce Riggen Elizabeth Ryan Laura Schloz Donny Seckman Mike Simpson 79 Class of 1979 Dean Stoner Joe Streitmatter Christy Strom Donna Sturm Dale Thrasher Tom Tracy Tony Whittaker Tom Wilkinson Mary Williams Roxanne Williams Linda Winans Brad Witte OFFICERS: STANDING: D. We have each grown, matured, and learned a lot. As students, we have faced our problems and have made some big decisions. We have accomplished great feats and failed small ones. We have greatly benefited form it all, and discovered that learning continues through our lifetime. We are still on the road to find out. As is customary in many yearbooks, the last page consists of a letter to the reader from the editor's and is rightly called the editor’s page. Since we are daring and like to try new things, we decided if it is good enough for other books it is good enough for the TOLO. We have great pride in this book. Until we tackled the job as co-editors we had not realized what it takes to put a yearbook together. Between ad sales, yearbook sales, deadlines, (which, by the way, if you don’t mind our bragging, we met each time—which is something that hasn’t been accomplished for awhile), Blankenberg picture days, our own picture taking, begging Mr. Simpson for off;campus permits, and the constant disagreements between the two of us, we somehow made it through the year. Through all of this chaos and confusion we managed to put together the 1978 TOLO. As we said earlier, we like to try new things. Many changes were made such as dispensing with score pages and putting the scores on the page of that particular sport. We also combined boys and girls sports where possible. We put the senior class on the endsheets of the book. This hasn’t been done for a few years. We had a theme for the book that was different from any other used before. The theme of a book is a step by step guide through it. We hope we accomplished this. The biggest thing we did this year was to use original division pages. Usually we get standardized ones from our book company, but since none of them fit our theme, we made our own. We are really pleased as to how they turned out and we hope you are, too. There are many people we should thank for their help in getting this TOLO out. First of all we must thank the staff. They were really a great group this year and we really appreciate the time they spent working after school. We want to make a special thanks to Laura Schloz, our business manager. She organized our ad selling and kept the books straight. Thanks to Mr. Kruger for approving our projects. Many thanks to Mrs. Jones for taking care of our finances and most of all for putting up with us. We especially want to thank our advisor, Mrs. Johnson. We cannot express our gratitude to her. She stayed many nights after school until 5:00 or even later just for us. She was always there and we really appreciated her. We have really enjoyed putting this yearbook together. It was lots of fun, but more important we learned a lot from doing it. This book was made for you and your memories. We have tried to accommodate your wishes. We truly hope you enjoy the 1978 TOLO. 90 Advertising The TOLO staff would like to thank everyone who purchased an advertisement in the TOLO this year. In return, we would ask that these people be given your support because they, in a big way, have helped make this book a success. 91 KIDD FUNERAL HOME, P.C.
