a? J % e %. ) • cu _ ' ’ _ DEDICATION MRS. HELEN WILLIAMS It seems only fitting that we dedicate our Tolo to Mrs. Helen Williams, our secretary. Who can say how many hours of endless work she has done for us? We know there have been times, when in the rush of school activities, we have neglected to express our appreciation to her. We can always depend on a friendly smile from Mrs. Williams whenever we are in the office. This is our way of saying Thank-you. Hopes that the contents of this book are acceptable to everyone. We have tried to depict life here at Toulon High as best we could. We are sure that we have inconvenienced some teachers with our picture-taking, but we are happy to say that they have put up with us. We've had deadlines to meet and most of the time we were late, what with missing pictures and incomplete write-ups. However, we think that you will enjoy our summary of the 1961-62 as we show it in the following pages and sincerely hope that in the years to come, it will bring back some pleasant memories. THE TOLO STAFF OF 1961-62 SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS--SEATED: H. B. Carlock, Principal; Clyde Ham, Joel Wilson, Roy Dutton, Dean Blair. STANDING: Harvey Jackson, Hayden Heaton, Willard Price. The school board meets at the high school the first Thursday night of each month. It is their responsibility to hire the personnel, which includes teachers, custodians, and secretary. Their duties also include seeing that the school has the necessary equipment needed to give the students the best education they can receive, the newest addition being the industrial arts classrooms, one of which is shown here. Probably one of their most difficult tasks is setting up a budget for the entire school year. TAKE YOUR ADVANTAGES TODAY FOR LIVING TOMORROW’’ H. B. CARLOCK - Principal Our faculty this year remained the same as last year but with one addition, Richard Switzer. Mr. Switzer took over the History classes for Mrs. Keller, P. E. classes for Mr. West, and became assistant coach in place of Mr. Vicini. Mrs. Keller's new position was that of guidance-counselor; Mr. West opened new courses for boys in industrial arts; and Mr. Vicini took over bookkeeping duties for the school board. Pansy Edwards Alta Elliot Marjorie Elsroth Florence Parker Graham Franklin Raymond Dalrymple SENIORS CLASS HISTORY Long, long ago--four years to be exact--your intelligent, talented, ambitious, witty graduating seniors were but lowly freshmen. Take a lesson, freshmen, someday your class, too, can be a senior class like ours. Not as good, perhaps, but a senior class, anyway. Enough of this sentimental reminiscence and down to hard facts. Our freshman class of 57 members was led by President Mary Luckett. She was assisted by Ronnie White. Kathy Jackson, David Reeves, Ann Webster, and Leon Heaton. Our four-year success story began with Bonnie Carrington being elected Homecoming Queen during her freshman year. This doesn’t happen very many times, so we were quite proud of her. During our sophomore year we added two valuable members to our class--Dixie Krans, and Connie Somberger. When nine sophomore boys made the varsity football squad, the games were much more interesting to us. The sophomore officers were Carolyn Smith, Mary Luckett, Bonnie Carrington, Ronnie White, John Perkins, and Donna Dustin. At the end of our sophomore year, there was some talk of Miss Newton's leaving us. However, we were glad to welcome her back as our junior sponsor. We were glad to have Mr. Joley back, too, but Miss Newton's prettier than he is. Everyone who attended our junior-senior prom will agree that it was the best prom ever held in the new gym. Of course, it is the only prom that was ever held there at the time of this writing; nevertheless, it was the best. And who can ever forget our wonderful junior and senior class plays? It's hard to believe that such talent could come from as small a school as Toulon. Our junior officers were John Perkins, Ann Webster, Mary Ann Mahany, Judy McWilliam, Leon Heaton, and Donna Dustin. To close our last year in good ole Toulon High, our officers were Dixie Krans, Barbara Slygh. Mary Luckett. Clifford Knowles, Donna Dustin, and John Perkins. As happens to every senior class, the year flew by, and we were in caps and gowns before we realized it. Soon our high school days will fill only a small part of our large collection of memories. AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS SENIOR A FISH TALE” in he hectic business world of 1975, one company stands out above the rest as a shining example of prosperity and a glittering achievement--Venete Webster's Publishing Company, Inc., publishers of Lonely Romances . Let's take a look at the activity going on in one of the offices. Why don't we take a day off from this dull routine of office work. Miss Edwards! Good idea, Mr. Grant, agreed Sue. Where are you going, boss? I thought I’d go down to the waterfront and maybe take a pleasure excursion. I had that in mind, too. Do you mind if I join you? Not at all! Let’s make it a twosome! Sue and Bob left the office, and stepped into the elevator. Without a word, the elevator girl, Mary Luckett, took them down to the ground floor. As she opened the door, she smiled and said, X = -b plus or minus the square root of b squared - 4ac divided by 2a. Bob and Sue went outside and hailed a taxi, instructing the cabbie, Gary Leonard to drive them to the Vikings' Club. Reaching their destination along the docks, they entered the plush Vikings' Club where the hat check girl, Connie Sornberger, took Mr. Grant's top hat with a smile and a wink. Donna Darling Dustin hurries to the customers. As she waits on her tables, she sings a medley of songs which she composed herself. This singing waitress is the entertainment until floor show time. Donna Darling sings that chef Keith Allen has a special special which will be personally brought by Robert Anderson, the assistant chef, to Bob and Sue's table. Just then the cigarette girl, Lois Franks, slinks by. She hurries to her dressing room to rehearse a few punch lines before her act. Kathy Jackson, the fabulous announcer, prepares to introduce the stars. Unfortunately she argues constantly with the manager, Willis McRell, about who should come first— Bubbles Ballen-tine, or Chicky Clark. When these grand acts end, there is much applause. The show proceeds— Jim Hoppock, the marvelous singer who has broken many records as well as doors, precedes his show biz friend, Lois Franks. She puts the crowd in stitches, and then rushes off to sell more cigarettes. As Bob and Sue begin to leave, they catch a glimpse of The Playboys —Leon Heaton, John PROPHECY Perkins, and Ronnie White, with their private secretaries Bonnie Carrington, Mary Sams, and Linda Reed. Bob and Sue proceeded on down to the pier, where the submarine, TROJANIC, designed by those eminent scientists Danny Newman, Dick Colver, and Jim Nicholson, was about ready to depart on another excursion. All the passengers stepped in including Bob and Sue. The stewardess introduced herself as Phyllis Durbin, and in a loud voice ordered them to be seated. When troublemaker Milo Streitmatter refused, Phyllis and her colleague, Carol McKenzie bodily threw him out into the water. As it was later revealed, the stewardesses were actually Ferocious Phyllis and Crusher Carol, the famous lady wrestlers of few seasons ago. Suddenly the door snapped shut and they began submerging. A voice came over the loud speaker, This is Captain DeBeir speaking. Please look out the portholes to your left. Over there you can see the Ocean's Eleven Baseball team warming up, with Chilausky on the mound. On your right is the Winslow Sea Weed Farm, sole suppliers of Grade A seaweed for Montooth's Sea Horse Farm, two leagues down. Say, there goes Jim's hired hand now, John Reed. Of course, not everyone was watching the seaweed very closely; Clifford Knowles and David Reeves were too busy gazing at a school of mermaids—Mary Ann Mahaney, Carolyn Smith, and Ann Webster, having their tails curled by beautician, Dixie Krans. Passing the concert hall, the passengers observed that pianist Judy McWilliam was having a little trouble keeping her candleabra lit under water; she had a wet wick. Giving up, she went ahead accompanying Evelyn Roark in a bassoon solo. Suddenly Mary Richards gave a cry of terror and pointed upward. Craning their necks, everyone looked through the portholes to see Patsy Parker and Mary Allen floating by. Barbara Slygh, the life-saver, dashed out and saved them both. They told the onlookers that they had been floating along in inner tubes when Patsy, displacing so much water, began sinking. Mary had plunged in after her, but Patsy pulled her down. You should have known better than to try to float in an inner tube, Patsy, said Barbara. Well, anyway, it was a good way to prove Archimede's principle, Drolled Mary. Uh-oh! It looks as if there is a leak in the...blub.... blub.... blub.... SENIOR MEMORABLE EVENT 1. Allen, Keith 2. Allen, Mary Graduation 3. Anderson, Robert March 28, 1944 4. This year’s student council officers were: President, Ann Webster; Vice-President, Bill Nicholson; Secretary, Donan Dustin; and Parlimentarian John Perkins. The council members met two weeks before school started to set definite plans for the school year. Although we couldn't have a parade with floats, a Trojan Victory March took its place--complete with band, team, coaches, and teachers. A new activity of the council this year was a student directory. They plan to continue making new improvements next year. The addition of seven new members made the total twenty-three. One project sponsored by the club was student teaching in the grade school. The purpose of the club is to examine the areas of teaching qualifications and requirements for teaching as a career guide to students who have an interest in that field. The Toulonicle was produced every three weeks, whereas in the past, it had been every six weeks. We used the cover as the staff of last year, with articles on the front page. Again this-year we had co-assistant editors. The staff was composed of 21 seniors, 19 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 5 freshmen. The production was done by junior and senior girls who were interested in commercial subjects. Many new books were added; old books were rebound or attractive jackets placed on them. The magazine rack, with its wide variety of magazines, was the place most frequented by the students. If rapid growth continues, new shelves will have to be provided for the books. MOTHER WALKS OUT Mothers are available to do most of our chores for us. This year was indeed a successful one for the mixed chorus. GIRLS AND BOYS CHORUS DANCE BAND The dance band was organized by Mr. Cooke last year to give some of the music students a chance to play a different kind of music from that which they play in concert band. The group practices twice a month to be ready for the frequent times they are called upon to perform. A few of the songs they have played during the year are Star Dust , Autumn Leaves and a jazzy arrangement of Muskrat Ramble .
