THOMAS C. HOTZ IN MEMORIAM .... O GOD, OUR HEAVENLY FATHER, WE REVERENTLY DEDICATE THIS YEARBOOK TO THE LASTING MEMORY OF THOMAS CLAUDE HOTZ. AS THE EVENTS OF LIFE HAVE LEFT US SADDER, WE WOULD RECALL ALL THAT WAS GOOD AND FAIR WITH HIM. WE THANK THEE FOR THE GRACIOUS MEMORIES WHICH GATHER ABOUT HIS LIFE, FOR KINDLY DEEDS AND THOUGHTS. FOR THE LOVE FREELY GIVEN AND THE LOVE MODESTLY RECEIVED, AND NOW AT LAST WE WOULD REMEMBER IN A COMMON SORROW THY SOLEMN MESSAGES OF LIFE AND DEATH. THE MORE WE PERCEIVE THAT THE THINGS WHICH ARE SEEN ARE TEMPORAL, SO MUCH THE SURER MAKE US THAT THE THINGS WHICH ARE NOT SEEN ARE ETERNAL. TEACH US THAT COMFORT IN THE WORDS OF JESUS, LET NOT YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED; MY PEACE I LEAVE WITH YOU. AND NOW, O GOD, WE INSCRIBE THIS YEARBOOK IN THE MEMORY OF A FRIEND AND COMPANION. JUDY TURNBULL IN MEMORIAM .... AH, SWEET MYSTERY OF LIFE, AT LAST I'VE FOUND THEE. NOW I KNOW THE SECRET OF IT ALL. ALL THE LONGING, SEEKING, STRIVING, WAITING, YEARNING. THE BURNING HOPE, THE JOY, THE TEARS THAT FALL. FOR 'TIS LOVE AND LOVE ALONE THE WORLD IS SEEKING. FOR 'TIS LOVE AND LOVE ALONE THAT CAN REPAY. 'TIS THE ANSWER, 'TIS THE END OF ALL OF LIVING; 3 FOR 'TIS LOVE AND LOVE ALONE THAT RULES FOR AYE. We chose Don Schmidt to carry the president’s baton around the first lap. Keeping up his morale were Sharon Curley, Vice-President, and Sue Slygh, Secretary-Treasurer. Our representatives to Student Council were Bob Carney and Joyce Durbin. Reporting on our standing was Linda Gerard. Marilyn Heaton and Sandy Orwig were cheering in the Junior-Varsity cheering section. Judy Winn represented the freshman girls as attendant at the F.H.A. Formal. Mrs. Keller and Mr. Vicini coached us around the track. We started the second quarter with the determination of eager Sophomores. Six members of the class dropped out of the race after the first lap. The relay baton was passed on to Marilyn Heaton. Right behind her were Sharon Curley, Vice-President, and Pat Muckey, Secretary-Treasurer. Our press agent was again Linda Gerard. Our Student Council members had done such a fine job on the first lap that the team” retained them in their office. Marilyn and Sandy also remained in the cheeringsection.Sharon Curleydropped out of the running briefly to represent us as sophomore attendant at the F.H.A. Formal. The coaches withstood the strain and tensions of their second year as advisors. In 1959, our third quarter of the relay, fifty-seven self-assured Juniors returned to the starting point of a new year. Leading us were Bob Baker, President; Paula Pyle, Vice-President: and the ever-hard working council members Joyce Durbin and Bob Carney. The rest of the class followed shortly behind. Don Schmidt reported the prominent events in the race to the local paper. Cheerleaders from our class included Marilyn Heaton, Sandy Orwig, and Pat Muckey. Larry White and Sandy Orwig represented us as attendants in the Homecoming Court. Mrs. Keller and Mr. Vicini helped us heal our charley-horses during the year. The greatest of our achievements was the Junior-Senior Prom. We held the long-to-be-remembered banquet-dance at the beautiful Hub Ballroom, with music provided by Bill Hardesty. Another accomplishment this year was the successful production at the Elmira Grade School of our three one-act plays: “Sweet? Sixteen , Butch , and Meet the Wife”. The year 1960 brought fifty-five veteran seniors rounding the home-stretch. In the lead were John Milburn, President; Sue Slygh, Vice-President; Paula Pyle, Secretary-Treasurer; and Dave Talbert, our mild-mannered” Reporter. Our two Student Council representatives were Bob Baker and Joyce Durbin. In the cheering section from our class were Pat Muckey and Marilyn Heaton. Mr. Vicini obtained a new assistant coach in the person of Mrs. Kidd. Sue Slygh and Bob Carney sat upon the royal thrones at the Homecoming celebration. In the fall, under the directorship of Mrs. Davies, the Senior Class became stage-struck and gave three more one-act comedies: “Father Says No! Don’t Kiss Her Now”, and Oh Baby . These plays were the first to be produced on our new stage in the new gymnasium. I think that we ordained it well. In the winter, nine senior boys led the basketball team, to its first undisputed Blackhawk Conference Championship in twenty-three years! We used our new facilities to the utmost advantage by not losing a game on our new home court. Finally, after four years of struggle and training, all the seniors crossed the “finish line (graduation). When the officials handed us our diplomas ( milestones in our lives), we knew that all our learning, friendship, sportsmanship, and endurance had been well worth the effort. A large percentage of the class are going to college to run another mile. We wish each other the best of luck in whatever we do in the future. I’m sure that we shall all remember our wonderful “race” at T.T.H.S. in which everybody won! 29 CAN YOU IMAGINE Adkins, Terry - Going to a dance Armstrong, Anita - Not at the library Baker, Robert - Driving a '31 Chevy Ballentine, Galen - Short and fat Boldman, Steve - Without Donna Carney, Bob - Liking English Collins, Roger - Liking Ronnie Collins. Tonight on my show, “An Evening with Paul and His Guitar,” I plan to talk about, and possibly interview, the members of the sensational class of’61. Before we went on the air, we received a phone call from the President of General Motors, Robert S. Baker, saying that he would be unable to make it tonight because he couldn’t get his 1930 Chevy started. The last words from Bob were, “They told me if I raised my two fingers and said 7’s, it would start.” Don’t give up yet, Bob. I read in the paper the other day that the almost famous Dave Talbert blew his chances at stardom, when during his solo drum jazz recital at Carnagie Hall, he got so carried away that he forgot the last score of his own composition “Sweet Pea Blues.” As he bravely ducked the tomatoes, he said to the audience, “Don’t worry world, you haven’t lost me yet. Susan Hampton and Joyce Durbin evidentally haven’t been told that this is a formal affair, for here they come now in their Olympic outfits. Isn’t it a good thing that Anita Garvin always carries the materials needed to create one of her famous dresses at a moment’s notice? The girls will undoubtedly knock ’em dead, figuratively speaking, of course. The Marblestone Three, otherwise known to you as Sterling Thompson, Bill Parrott, and John Milburn, have recently recorded and later will sing for you, “I Knew You Didn’t Love Me When I Found the Fleas in My Bed,” or “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.” Those boys seem to have a sound all of their own. Galen “money isn’t everything but it helps Ballentine, the great Hollywood playboy, has just arrived in his long black car. Everyone is anxiously waiting to see who his date will be. Galen says he is keeping the secret of his success to himself. Looking into the audience, I see the tall dashing figure of Don Schmidt. This brings to mind his new found success in the men’s clothing business. Don has recently opened up a chain of clothing stores for petite men. Now at last, he will have no trouble in finding clothes to fit him. Roger Felt, recently acclaimed the world’s champion food taster, may later show us his until now “hidden talent. At the moment he is busy at the snack bar. Will he never tire of work, work, work? Those two famous Latin professors have just arrived. Of course, I am referring to Lynn Shearer and Roger Collins. Their great love for Latin in high school led them to decide to share their knowledge with the poor unsuspecting college students. Asked for a few choice words, they replied, “Like we dig this Latin jazz the most.” And who says the Latin language is dead? Here’s a surprise for you. Larry White and Marilyn Heaton have finally become engaged. I hear Larry has been playing hard to get. Once they get to know each other a little better, they may even take the fatal step. Larry Meaker, the farmer’s farmer, has revolutionized agriculture. He has invented a jet-propelled tractor. Heard in passing, was the comment, “This thing never touches the ground, but man does it travel!” I hear Terry Wickey is really quite a cut up these days. He has opened up his own meat market and is making quite a business of it. In the recent Kentucky Derby, Eddie, “The Shoemaker,” Swedeen came sliding in to a glorious first place. During one of their twirling exhibitions, Betty Roach and Carolyn Thrasher had first place all wrapped up until they accidentally hit one of the judges with their baton. When he regained consciousness, he gave them a third. Well, girls, all I can say is try using foam rubber batons. Marvin, “Love ’em and leave ’em” Shults, after marrying his third millionairess, was quoted as saying, “GIRLS are the best thing that ever happened to me! I wonder where he got that line? Alas! Misfortune struck Sharon Standard. She was just beginning to enjoy her new-found wealth inherited at the death of the president of the Standard Oil Company, when it was discovered that the money had been left to the wrong Standard. If you were to visit the TTHS cafeteria today, you would immediately notice a remarkable change. In the little window you would see the smiling faces of the newly employed chefs, Don Hendrick, Steve Boldman, Bob Carney, Gordon Whittaker, and John Gerard. Of course, the food hasn’t improved, but they do look dashing in their tall white hats. There has been a sudden boom in the female enrollment at Toulon. Could it be because of the newly 32 hired principal, Chril McMillen? Donna Sue Witten and Shirley Moats have just signed the largest contract in the history of women’s soccer competition. That slapstick comedy team of Sandy Orwig and Judy Newman have hit the big time. When asked to whom they owe all of their success to, they replied, “To Z Babes, naturally.” Terry Adkins, Professor of Hot Rod-ology, at Princeton University, was forced to retire his position due to circumstances beyond his control. He is now recovering from his mishap. The student who pulled the jack out from under the car, is no longer attending the University. The results of the latest Mrs. Homemaker contest are final. There has been a four-way tie between Judy Muckey, Janet Hand, Joy Talbert, and Suzy Lee. How about that! The Toulon industrial firm, that makes Little Lulu Lollypops, has just been taken over by that business tycoon, Randy Reed. When asked why he ventured into such a deal, he replied, “I just love lollypops.” These rich people can afford to be eccentric. Ronnie Collins won’t be able to make it tonight since he hasn’t been heard from in fifteen years. He entered the air force soon after he graduated from high school. Since the day he took his first solo flight, he has not been heard from, Nick Woolsey has just made the headlines by running away with that sweet little starlet, Kandy Kane. How does he do it anyway? Latest news flash from Puerto Rico! American ambassadors Carolyn Pitezel and Linda Omanson unexpectedly returned home. When asked for an explanation, the girls informed reporters that they had forgotten their Spanish dictionary; and, without them, they couldn’t speak a word of the language. Madaline Jackson, operatic contralto, recently made her debute in the Metropolitan opera house. She had the audience near tears with her interpretation of the “French Onion Song.” Sue Slygh has been chosen to be the first female to travel to the moon. They always said she would go far. At the international speed typing contest, the three finalists were Pat Muckey, Paula Pyle, and Darlyne Olmsted. Before the final contest, Pat was getting a manicure at Sandy Warren’s beauty salon, when the scissors slipped and she was unable to compete in the contest. Darlyne got her finger caught between the x and the z and couldn’t carry on. Paula won by default. Linda Gerard, lady scientist, has discovered a new formula for overweight people. She says she has found from experience that the best thing to do is to quit eating. To look at Linda, you would never guess she used to weigh two hundred pounds. Her idea really must work. Still in the world of science, Elizabeth Haley and her lab assistant Carol Lee have been working on the increasing problem of tomato worms. The girls say they may come up with something any day now. In one of their recent flights, airline stewardesses Judy Winn and Anita Armstrong were awarded medals for quick thinking. One of their passengers, Bonnie Morrell, got her finger caught in her seat belt and needed the girls to help her out of her predicament. Well, folks, I see that it is about time for me to say good-night. I hope you have enjoyed tonight’s special show. 33 SENIOR PERSONALITIES Athletic Ability Larry White Susan Hampton Musical Ability Bob Baker Joyce Durbin Citizenship Marvin Shults Sue Slygh Scholastic Ability Don Schmidt Lynn Shearer Best Dressed Steve Bold man Pat Muckey SEATED LEFT TO RIGHT: Donna Dustin, and Leon Heaton, Student Council Representatives; Judy McWilliam, Reporter; Mary Ann Mahany, Secretary-Treasurer; Ann Webster, Vice-President; and John Perkins, President. Outstanding for the team this year was Dean Seckman, who should make a fine contribution to the varsity next year. Letterwinners for the year included five sophomores and thirteen freshmen. The lineup usually included the following boys: ENDS, Roark and Witte; TACKLES, Pitzer and Sams; GUARDS, Jackson, Williamson, and Webster; CENTER, Schmidt; BACKS, Dunn, Seckman, Anderson, Summy, Ham, and Pyle. By capturing the Blackhawk Conference, a twenty-three year jinx was broken. Although a record of 16 wins and 2 losses was compiled in conference play, a complete about-face was performed in tournaments with only 1 win and 4 losses. The team this year gained a reputation of becoming involved in “cliff-hangers.” Many times a defeat was looming overhead when their well-executed halfcourt squeeze went into effect and turned the contest into another victory. Seven times the half-court press reversed the tide. Toulon was involved in two overtime games, a one-point difference game and many other close affairs, winning all except the last one. Having a good gym madea definite improvement. The gym got a good start in that not one varsity contest was lost there. Many times the 1200 seats were jammed full. The enthusiasm generated from adults was higher than many previous years. Often at away games Toulon fans would outnumber the opponent’s followers. The pep band at home games and the cheerleaders at all games did a great job this year. Roger Talbert was our faithful Trojan head, and followed the proud stepping white feet. Homecoming was the highlight of football season. The king and queen were escorted onto the field in Mr. Cooke's black Thunderbird. The band formed a football around their majesties and saluted them with •• Fascination. All three choruses, the band, and the girls sextet took part in the Christmas program in the gym. Everyone liked the variety of songs and the style in which the program was put on. After the performance, every band and chorus member enjoyed the party sponsored by Mr. Cooke. Toulon joined Princeville in a series of exchange good-will concerts. Thirty-six students attended the vocal festival at Elmwood in March. The Trojans hosted the Blackhawk Conference Bands in our gym April 18. Our three choruses and band attended the contests. Some brave solo and ensemble groups tried their hand at contest, too. 53 FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Mary Jo Newman, Pat Muckey, Janice GIRLS’ CHORUS Cox, Rosemary St. John, Becky Carrington, Judy Turnbull. It has taken the initiative of obtaining the conference banners for the new gym. Tiie Homecoming dance and Christmas party, sponsored by the Student Council were both very successful. For the first time the Student Council has their own bulletin board in the study hall. It consists of the Minutes of each monthly meeting, people in the spotlight, jokes, and special information for the students. With the last part of the school year approaching, the Student Council plans to carry out many more projects for the improvement of Toulon High School. The officers of the Student Council are as follows: President, Don Schmidt: Vice-President, Bob Baker; Secretary, Joyce Durbin: and Parliamentarian, John Perkins. Our advisor is Mrs. Keller. Second spot went to the Seniors. Their idea was to brush the Indians off the field by using a huge hairbrush. Third place was awarded to the Freshmen. Their idea was to bowl the Indians over with a bowling ball. The Juniors had a very good idea but only three prizes were awarded. We have had an entire program on each of the state colleges at our meetings. Some members have been observing and practice teaching in the grade school. This is a valuable experience for them. To make money, we sold basketball pencils. F.T.A. has had a busy, successful year. ACTIVITY REPORT The Toulon Chapter of F.H.A., consisting of approximately ninety girls, had a very busy year under the supervision of Mrs. Laura Carlock, our advisor. We had a party September 2 to welcome the freshman girls and to interest them in joining F.H.A. The annual F.H.A. rally was held at Wenona on October 1. Sixty of the Toulon members attended. Our biggest event of the year was the Christmas formal held December 17. The music was furnished by the Royal Tones of Kewanee. The theme, “Sleigh Ride,” was carried out in the decorations. The queen was Sandy Warren. Her attendants were DarlyneOlmsted, senior; Bonnie Carrington, junior; Anne Shearer, sophomore; and Becky Carrington, freshman. Our annual family night was February 23; all the parents were invited to attend the potluck dinner, and the program. The new members were initiated that night. The girls working on their junior homemaking degrees are Delores Cantwell, Janice Cox, Teri Fell, Jane Langdon, Nancy Hostetler, Vickie McMillen, Glenna Milburn, Nancy Nichols, Delores Perkins, Jill Pyell, Sharon Swank, Sharon Whitten, Becky Carrington, Connie Creasey, Karen Dutton, Beth Jackson, Wilma McRell, Mary Jo Newman, Carolen Nolan, Rosemary St. John, Sharon Thomas, Diana Wilson, and Vickie Ziegler. The girls working on their chapter homemaking degrees are Sandy King, Marilyn Smith, Patty Lee, Norma Hunt, Shirley Stewart, Priscilla Garvin, Georgia Puckett, Florence Allen, Becky Hand, Donna Fort-man, Dianne Griffin, Sue Woolsey, Sandy Reed, Patty Catton, and Sharon Lewis. F.H.A. week was April 9 thru April 15. There was a different event planned for each day of the week. The potluck dinner in honor of the seniors was May 8. This was our last event of the year. The installation of new officers is performed at this time, and the girls are given their degrees they earned. Our officers this year were Marilyn Heaton, President; Dixie Krans, Vice-President; Mary Luckett, Secretary-Treasurer; Judy Winn, Reporter; Mary Sams, Points Chairman; Susan Hampton, Sports Chairman; and Joyce Durbin, Historian. The sports we participated in were divided among the nine months we had school. In September and October, we had archery, softball, and soccer; November and December, volleyball and swimming; January and February, bowling and trampoline; February and March, bowling and basketball; April, tennis and badminton; and May was make-up month for those who needed extra points. We participated in bowling, archery, basketball, and swimming postal tournaments. The classes had tournaments in softball, volleyball, and basketball. All of the officers and the advisor, too, feel that G. A. A. was very successful this school year. 0 ft • . t n 12 ■ A_____________!__________ ft A ft ft G. A. A. The F.F.A., with 34 members, was a very successful group this year with the leadership of our advisor and the officers. The officers were Chris McMillen, President; Larry Meaker, Vice-President; Tom Hotz, Secretary; Nick Woolsey, Treasurer; Leon Heaton, Reporter; and Jim Winslow, Sentinal. Mr. Joley was our advisor. These officers attended a leadership school at the beginning of the year. The main money making projects this year were selling rat bait and returns from our gilt chain. The gilt chain is a program mainly for helping boys get started in hog projects. This year approximately five boys were started. This year we continued our community service activity of giving Christmas baskets to needy families. For community co-operation we attended church together during F.F.A. Week. We were always willing to work for our community. The F.F.A. had three new and very successful activities this year. First of all, we started the year with a weiner roast and hayrack ride. Then came the night we had the Greenhand (formal) Initiation. At this meeting our parents were invited and after the meeting we showed them our great new well-equipped shop and also the rest of the new building. The third and really big addition was the Plow-Boy Prom. Don Hendrick worked all year toward that night and it was a big success. This year at our Annual Parent-Son Banquet we had one thing that should be mentioned, a yearly award placque was dedicated to our Secretary, Tom Hotz, who was killed in an auto crash during the school year. Activities done by parts of the boys this year were attending the International, showing at livestock shows and grain shows, testing mild and the State F.F.A. Convention. With a few additions and improvements we hope to again win an award for excellence from the STUDENT BULLETIN. This year we had co-assistant editors instead of just one. The voting in the election was so close that we decided to make both Kathy Jackson and Connie Sornberger assistant editors--a common practice in many schools. Another major change was in thecover; weused a nameplate (selected by T.T.H.S. students) with articles on the front page. The staff was composed of nine seniors, seven juniors, four sophomores, and one freshman, with production by thetypingll class.Thesponsor was Mrs. Kidd; the editor, Linda Gerard. Everyone did his best to bring you an interesting and informative publication every six weeks. Staff members pictured clockwise from upper left hand corner are Linda Gerard, Connie Sornberger, Kathy Jackson, Mrs. Kidd, Marvin Shults, Joy Talbert, Galen Ballentine, Joyce Durbin, Judy Winn, Anita Armstrong, Don Schmidt, Lynn Shearer, Dave Talbert, and Anita Garvin. Under the direction of Mrs. Keller, our faculty librarian, and with the assistance of twenty-one student librarians, the library has been made available to the student body. The library has a large variety of reading with approximately four thousand books. There have been about one hundred and fifty new books added during the year. Two Chicago papers, the Star-Courier, the Galesburg Register, and the Stark County News are available to everyone. There are thirty magazine subscriptions, which are very popular. A new set of World Books has been added to the library. Another new addition this year is two sections of metal shelves. 86 Terry Adkins Make Money Georgia Puckett Rod Anita Armstrong Air Line Stewardess Democrats Stereo Robert Baker College This study-hall desk with a top that won't stay up.
