SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Who was it that said there were no signs of success in the hearts and minds of those 1958 Seniors of good ole Tor- rence-Lytle High? Was it you? Ah, yes, no doubt. But do yo ' u know . . . While enjoying my Christmas holi- days, I thought it wise to look up my fellow graduates. By the way, I am Frankie Allison, who is now a superb mathe- matician at the IBM Company, in New York. My first ambition was to visit Huntersville, and the surrounding areas. As I moved along, I saw a large sign that stated Smith Davis Mortuary. The name seemed familiar so I decided to stop in. To my delight, I was greeted by Leroy Smith and James Davis. They hired as their beautician, Emma Alex- ander and their secretary, Becky Ing- ram. 1 stopped at dear ole T. L. and as I approached the office, I saw an attract- ive young secretary. Of course, it was Ella Nixon and she was telling me that BerthineHart and Ella Faye Howard were practicing their secretarial skill at a modern insurance building in Washington, and Lucy Knox was at the Pentagon there, while Betty White, Yvonne Patterson and Carolyn Mundy are executive secretaries. As 1 was looking the building over I spied Annie Reid and she w a s teaching English. Joyce Douglas was also teaching fresh- man English. As I strolled through the auditorium, I saw a group of boys and girls as sembled and it seemed as if they w e r e learning something. It was Edna Berry teaching music. Did you mention music? Jay Lee Grier is now that great singer of Luprino. He has had many hits over the nation. Another Fats Domino, huh? Among those in the medical field in Charlotte was Ronald Laney, city ' s most reliable Negro physician. He owned a large office and had two nurses who were Bettye Sloan and Dora Carr. As 1 peeked in Good Samaritan,! was stopped by Lucy Berry, head nurse of male surgery and L o u i s e Henderson, who was in the baby ward. As I passed through town, I stopped in at the Charlotte Observer Plant and the manager had just hired a new columnist, Ray Donaldson, whose work has been praised immensely by the subscribers. Willie Gaston had his own weekly column on interior decorating and he is su- perior. Iwas then astonished by the beauty of a sign that beared the words Modern Beauty Salon, Willie Horton, owner. Inside were Hazel Kerns, Annette Har- vell, Shirley Hall, and Blondelia Spears all working steadily on hair design, facials and m an i c u r e s . Joining this salon was a fantastic barber shop with Adrain Nelson, George Porter and Frank Barringer owners and operators. Back of the barber shop were Joyce Grier and Nellon Wilson who w e r e making the finest of clotljes for Lucielle ' s and The Vogue. I was told that Clarence Mc- Knabb was an overseas doctor in Guam and Leroy Henderson, a missionary, is now in Venezula. Incidentally, Betty Barringer is now a naval recruiting officer. Charles Moore is still piloting. It was with happiness that Larry Walker was pastoring at St. John ' s Baptist Church with a membership of 400. He told us that George Stinson and Keith Connor were electrical engineers at Douglas Aircraft and Richard Black was a pro football star with the Cleve- land Browns, Eunice Jackson is still a typist in Philadelphia. Guess who I saw on my way back? John Benson, who was a distribution clerk in one of the largest corporations in his home state. New Jersey. . . . and now back on my job in 1970 as I think back of the past, I burst with joyover the success and happiness that endureth those 1958 seniors. 20
