i . 1954 TORCH Published by the Student Body of. TORRANCE HIGH SCHOOL NINETEEN HUNDRED FIFTY-FOUR A view of the beautiful Tartarville campus as the crow sees it. Stretching over 20 acres, the campus extends north from the foot- ball field to Carson Street, west from Watson to Plaza Del Amo. During the past two years, three new modern class-buildings, a cafeteria, a music building, and a gym were added to the already scenic sights of the school. TORRANCE HIGH SCHOOL DEDICATION We, the members of the annual staff, wish to dedicate this yearbook to the graduates of 1954. It is our sincere wish that in these pages they may find, for years to come, the spirit that abounded during their four years at Torrance High School. It has been our goal to capture for them and future graduates, in pictures and words, an everlasting remembrance. So that they may again know the thrill of the first football game or may find anew some warm friendship long since forgotten. We hope that this may prove to be more than an ordinary book, that it may help each and every graduate carry through- out his entire lifetime The Spirit of Torrance High School. They lost two of their closest games to the perennial 1-2 teams, Samohi and Inglewood. The scores 19-13 and 7-6 respec- tlvelly. Torrance also dominated the first two teams in the All Bay League line-up. Receiving honors were the following Co-captain and Tackle — Ed Powell End — Jerry Farrar Tackle- Ralph Clifford Guard — Richard Cosgrove Fullback— Don Kasten Denotes unanimous vote. Second String Captain and Halfback — Burt Smith Center — Bob McCutcheon Linebacker — Carlos Skaggs Wingback — Joe Lafferty Ed Powell was awarded the honor of being placed on the All- C. I. F. Team. 97 Don Kasten, Tartar ' s highly touted, All-Bay Lea- gue fullback, gains ground around left end. Don was one of the main assets to the team this year, with his versatile ability of blocking, running and tackling. One of Torrance ' s greatest fullbacks in many years is Don Kasten, Senior of ' 54. Burt Smith, the Tartar ' s hard running All-Bay League tailback, straight arms his way around right end for more yardage for his school. Burt, elected Captain, has done a tremendous job for the team this year. Burt is a sixty minute ball player and another Senior of ' 54. Joe Lafferty, another versatile member of Tor- rance ' s talented backfield. Here Joe is shown chalk- ing up more yards on one of his dangerous reverses. Joe has been a terrific help to his team and school and is another graduating Senior. rr- Burt Smith, All-Bay League halfback and Captain, is shown here again gaining more yards on one of his sideline jaunts. Burt outstanding not only in football, but in baseball, basketball and track, is a great all-around athlete. 98 i. BEE FOOTBALL ROW ONE: J. Howorlh, J. Hughes, D. Confer, C. Babbit, J. Clouse, K.
