No class activity or commit- tee was complete without his kindly advice and enthusiastic help. No task has been too difficult or tedious for him as he worked for his Seniors. Because the members of the Senior Class of ,49 cannot adequately express their affection and esteem for him, they have chosen to honor Mr. Reynolds in the yearbook. It is with great pleas- ure the Senior Class and the Annual Staff dedi- cate the 1949 edition of the TORCH to Edward Reynolds. bl iw . The art staff of the annual, directed by Miss Crowe, sketched everything from gold mines to cowboy bathtubs. Miss Griffin, advisor for the ToRcH, combined practical experiences with the learn- ing of mounting and trimming pictures, soliciting advertising, writing copy, financing the annual and the many other lessons which all go into the compilation of a yearbook. This, our second year in the Bay League, was a good beginning for the school which is next to the smallest in the Bay League. The team using the T-formation, single wing and double wing did a Hne job of playing. The season was opened by a game with Covina who ended up on the short end of a 27 to lil score. The Inglewood game started a three game losing streak, but the team re- covered and took the last three, two by 18 to U and 25 to O scores, Redondo, who beat by a 33 to 6 score last year, ended on the other end of the 14 to 7 score of this last season. The Tartar diamond habitues went into the game with grim determination, and held the lead into the final frame. The power of the Redondites broke loose in that inning, however, and a gallant Tartar squad dropped the tilt to a foe who knew they had been in a ball game. The high flying Tartars had whipped Beverly Hills, Newport Beach twice, Leuzinger and El Segundo in succession. They finished the season with eight victories, having toppled Oxy frosh twice and Santa Monica earlier. They rose from a deep cellar position to third place in the Bay League after they hit stride. The teams they fell to were St. Anthony's, Inglewood, San Pedro, Jordan, the Alumni, Narbonne and Redondo. The big guns at the plate were Harry Theodosis, and Dick Turner. None of the local bat-men com- piled spectacular averages, but '6The Cati' had easily the best record. He smacked the ball at a .333 clip, with Turner being closest with 262. On the mound the chores were divided between Alabama Bishop and Theodosis. VARSITY BASEBALL FIRST ROW CSittingJ L. to R.: Max Robinson, Buddy Licht, Greg James, Jim Taylor, Wendell Vaughn. President Spring Semester Fall Semester GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Torrance G.A.A. had the largest membership it has ever had since its founding. The activities sponsored by thc club this year were two award banquets, one spread, one Bay League play day, and the Hallowe'en barn dance. The activities in which the Torrance G.A.A. participated were basketball, volleyball, speedball, and baseball play days. An all-sport play day was held at the Redondo High School. There were two bowling play days in which Torrance competed against El Segundo. Bowling, a new sport for the G.A.A. was also mastered by the girls. The G.A.A. was founded on the principle of developing friendship, ability, and good sportsmanship among the girls. Torrance has succeeded in this aim and will continue to grow in the years to come. And all the work we've had to do To plan and print this book for you. We worked till eight o,clock at night Without a bite to eat, Except a few thin pretzel sticks- Which didn't taste like meat. And when we'd leave to get a bite, We'd find a page that wasn't right. But eating wasn't all our care, There were a thousand more. We worried till we had gray hair, At times we almost swore. We wondered if it'd ever come, The time when all our work was done. The write-ups never would come in, The pictures were behind, We thought we didn't have the dough, We nearly lost our mind. But struggled through until at last, We hope, our worries are all past. And ITOW although our meter's changed, It,s hoped that you won't mind, For there's a little limerick We'd like to leave behind. We,re sure that it will give to you A picture that we know is true.
