'Q POREWGRD The art of manipulating loosely jointed little figures by either strings, rods, or with fingers is a very ancient art. Puppets have been found in old Egyptian tombs, and for centuries they have delighted audiences composed of all ages. Today the puppet theatre is experiencing a renaissance in the United States which will be a matter of importance in the history of the theatre. When my own little wooden- headed actors made their first bow in New York some twenty years ago, they were very new. Today Puppets, or Marionettes, have made their appear- ance in almost every city. Publishers have printed some twenty-live different ,rl l ft , I' .L W 4 J books dealing with the art of the Marionette theatre. There is an annual magazine called Puppetry, which lists some l5O different Marionette corn- panies. There are Marionette summer schools, and this year there is a Mari- onette convention in Chicago. Puppets do many things the professional actor cannot do as well, and, therefore, they have and hold a very legitimate and honored place in the theatre. o1,.,alCU1 1 ' .L .. ELSON VICE-PRINCIPQL The artist of the puppet theatre, we are told, is the one who, hav- ing set the marionette in motion, contrives not to move it, but rather lets it move itself. ln like manner does education, though guiding, seek always to help the learner to become more aware of his own individuality, his own potentialities. lt is my hope that the years of study have set in motion for you a power which will always develop in you a finer self expression, a more complete lite. -ELIZHBETI-I F. Personally, I can't see anything humorous about my retiring, and that sort o' cramps my style. There is only one thing I have definitely decided upon when that time comes, namely, to actually catch enough-and big enough-fish to make good on all the fishing yarns I have kidded myself into thinking my friends have believed all these years. That ought to keep me plenty busy all the time I have left. THOMHS H. ELSON. If I should live to retire, I think I shall drive up to the school every morn- ing and watch all the other teachers go in. Then, I shall drive home and read fairy tales, stories of good little boys and girls who always mind their P's and O's. Then, l'll go and call on friends I never had time to go to see in the old school days. In fact, if I live to retire, I'll really begin to live. A Eva IONES. It will be a great life to be a real modern grandmother, and that is what I'm contemplating in my old age. I hope to live within walking distance of my married children and shall spend my time knitting for the little ones-who knowsl I may even resume my roller-skating and bicycle riding. Perhaps, l'll have a grandson who will fly a plane, and maybe, he'll take Granny along. Since life begins at forty, I'm looking forward to a gay old age. LOIS L. ENGEL. I plan to locate in the South Seas, there I shall stalk the wild boar, ride the breakers, hunt the giant turtle, cultivate the bread fruit treeg and study the other natives. Hnyone who is interested in such a life may come and talk it over. Departure will not take place until about 1972. WILLIPIM E. CROW. When I'm a nice old lady, I shall sit by the tire and spin-spin yarns about the humorous sayings and doings of the pupils of Torrance High in bygone days. STELLH YOUNG. It is not the writer's ambition to be either the wit or the nit-wit of the Torrance faculty. Wise-cracking, day-dreaming, or, romancing in the moon- light, sooth-saying, or crystal-gazing, seem never to have been destined to be my particular talent according to the signs of the Zodiac. Perhaps in the year Two Thousand regular passenger trips will be scheduled to the moon, and there will be a demand for teachers of ancient history. Then I shall fondly relate the tales of the Evolution of the Machine Hge, which marked the crisis during the years of my youth. One thing is certain. There will always be someone in need of a friendly smile, a kindly deed, or a garden to putter in when youth moves too fast to meet the devotion of a young-old school- marm. SHRH H. VAUBEL. Instead of coming back to school in September when I retire, I want to take a trip around the world and then come back to a home with a large garden where I can raise beautiful flowers. FLORENCE BEHR. I15l If H C U L T Y I hope to grow old gracefully, reveling in the triumphs of my daughter, and attempting to write the Great Hmerican Novel, but I suppose I'll spend most of my time counting my pension, trying to make one dollar do what two did before. GRHCE MORSE. Retire'? On a desert isle beneath a tropical moon raising goofus birds to supply goofus feathers to a goofey world, says CHHRLIENE HLLQN. In the words of the poet, Who knows? E. PHRKS. Retire? Yes, I hope so. By that time I should be able to organize an Pllumni Glee Club of mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and a few grandsons and daughters, singing in the soprano part. When that happy day arrives, be sure to join us, you and your progeny. We'll sing Three Cheers for Torrance and really mean itl MHRIORIE EISCHEN. When I retire, with fabled riches, 'Twill be to a place for which I itches: H house, with roomy attic, In a land quite free from static, Where short-waves aren't so darned erratic. F. WEDDING-HRM. When I retire after making my first million dollars from school teaching I intend to lie on my back and attempt to get back the 25 pounds I lost during the last football season, and then let the rest of the world go by. B. I. DONHUHE. When I retire from teaching the youth, I expect to hitch up my Chevie, forsooth, Rnd hie me up to redwoods tall, Finally opening my home to orphans small. IRENE MILLS. Hfter spending my S3200 each month, I shall set around and gab with the other has-beens and tell about how much better we useta do things. H. B. FINDREWS. When I retire, I expect to set my alarm clock for six o'clock every morn- ing so that I may hear it ring and then turn over again for a good long snooze. I-lfter I make up a few years of early morning sleep, I want to go places and see things in other countries. ETHEL BURNI-IRM. I hope to visit the public libraries and read the articles giving advice to parents on raising their children and then write to the authors, inquiring if they have tried out any of their suggested schemes of child-raising on their own children. F. E. BHRROW. I shall write a book entitled lacks and Iills at a Certain Famous Institu- tion of Learning, and illustrate it with cartoons of Love's Old Sweet Song as observed at T. I-I. S. I HDH M. Pl T H L E T l C S In the last two years athletics at Torrance have travelled a new path for the better. We are on topg a new do-or-die spirit has sprung up. What is to hold us back? Placing tive men on the mythical all-star Marine League team, and the two captains, lack lavens and Iohnny McFadden, receiving all- Southern California mention, should not only set an ex- ample tor the upstarts but for every- one. To Coach Donahue, and his 1935 co-champs, we give our vote of appreciation, and pledge 100 per cent backing of his future squads. BERNHRD I. DONQHUE Coach t59l F C C T B Q. L L IHCK IHVENS CHU-City-Hll-Marine League Halfl lack was the triple-therat man on the power-studded Tartar team. His ability to swivel-hip around the enemy, and snag the passes out of nowhere, gave lack the honor this year of being the only Marine League football player to be placed on the mythical all-city second team, and the tirst Torrance player to receive honorable mention on the Hll-Southern California. Engineer Iavens averted many a Tartarderailment, and sent the opponent into a siding. His loss to Torrance will be an asset to any college. CHHBLES SMITH CHU-Marine League Fulll With boomer Chuck Smith carrying the mail, something was bound to happen. l-le was plenty beefy, and his grinding power polished off his opponents to the last degree. H typical Hll-Marine League plunger and line crasher, Chuck had rhythm in his maneuvers, and hit the heart of the line with irresistible force. His blocking and defensive playing is going to be missed next year. IIMMIE HMMHN Iimmie was the head clerk in the aerial department. Passing the old pigskin with certain aim, he helped to account for many of the Tartars' win- ning points. Hs a ball carrier, Iimmie had natural ability, and swept the wings of his opponents with the prowess of a sensational star. The 1936 team will have a bright spot at left half. BOB TBEZISE fFlll-Marine League Quarterl This was Bob's tirst year at barking signals, but he soon found himself, and was the real stuff. His consistent punting, excellent selection of plays, and natural blocking, easily gained him a position on the Hll-Marine League team. Bob returns next fall, and is Coach Donahue's brightest prospect. IOHNNY MCFQDDEN fFlll-Marine League End? Hn inspiration to his team, Iohnny's sensational catches paved the way for many of the Tartar touchdown jaunts. H fast crashing end, McFadden dynamited into the backtield of his opponents, wrecking and smearing plays before they could form. Iohnny has been Hll-Marine League for two years, and his natural ability should carry him on to great heights in college. Torrance-Narbonne Game Y I. Iavens i70l b F O O T B H L L DONHLD HHYNES CHll-Marine League Second String Tacklel It was Don's tirst year, but that only made him work harder. With de- termination and pluck, he charged into the enemy's backtield and proved himself a tackle. Haynes was a mainstay in the Tartar defense, and his lighting spirit will be hard to replace next year. MHX SMITH CHU-Marine League Guardl Coming up from last year's yearlings, Max proved what trying can do. He played phenomenal football all season, and was on the bottom of every pile. Max was handicapped by a mid-season injury, but his appearances on the gridiron were all outstanding performances, and placed him on the mythical Hll-Marine League team. Max's untimely death three weeks after winter graduation was a sad blow to all. He had received an appointment to Hnnapolis. HHRRY RICHHHRT CCenterJ Harry was the behind-the-line boy in defensive Work, and possessed a rare faculty in smearing running and pass plays. His accurate centering led the Tartar backs on to glory in every game. H top-notch player in every detail, and weighing only l45 pounds, Harry gained the respect of every rival he played against. PHILIP IENSEN fGuardl Phil was Max's running mate and also was a recruit from the light- weights. He turned out to be one of the powerhouse men on the Tartar line, and his ability at running interference smoothed the ,way for many team scores. His graduation leaves a big vacancy. FRHNK THOMPSON CTackleJ Reporting for experience as an experienced tackle, this year Prank de- veloped into a rough, aggressive lineman, and filled a large gap in the 'l'artar's forward wall. His pile-driving attacks on defense broke up plays with devasatating results, and his huge stature on defense opened up holes for a back to make those needed yards. He still has another year. Trezise-lavens-Davis McFadden H. Richhart-Iensen l71l F C O T B H L L HUBERT LUCK Clflndl L Hard Luck Hubert played in only three games, due to injuries, but he displayed the goods when he was in there. Fast and flashy, Luck filled Coach Donahue's order for a stream-lined speed attack. He had the needed incentive to catch passes, and his blocking and offensive ability made him a hard player. Plnother loss to Torrance. LEO ROSSET KGuardJ Iron Man Rosset is the rugged type that would rather play football than eat land hates wornenj. H vicious tackler and hard blocker, Rosset will undoubtedly be an Hll-Marine League guard next year. Rough and ag- gressive, Leo will be one of the most valuable cogs in Coach Donahue's l936 machine. FORREST Mcl-HENRY CEndJ Doc is a consistent player who is light, but showed up well against heavier competition. Forrest played very little ball until the last of the season, but he has the tight and grit to make an outstanding player on the 1936 team. RHY DHVIS CGuardJ Ray had never played much ball, but his blocking and defensive playing earned him a position on the team. During his two years of football, Davis had a tighting spirit that never ceased. HHRRY OSWQLD CTackleJ Big and tough, Oswald was a hard opponent for his rivals. His hard tackling and stonewall defensive playing kept Haynes on his toes for fear of substitution. lHCK KENT CEndJ Tall and heavy, lack was a contender for right end. With two years' experience behind him, Kent should fill the position and take a worry off Coach Donahue's shoulders. LEONHRD HHRRIS CTackleJ To the call of football Harris will ever eagerly respond. His love for the game-plus a vow to himself--will make him an outstanding lineman on the SB squad. Big and aggressive, Leonard is always in the midst of play. Hosset-M. Smith-R. Richhart Luck-Gilbert--Oswald-Thompson ps.- 5. I l72l F O O T B H L L , BHYMOND RICHHHRT CC'enterJ Bay lacked the experience, but under Coach Donahue's and brother l-larry's tutelage, he is destined to be a four-year letterman, and will handle the position like a veteran. I-le has proved his willingness and ability, and will be a bright spot on the local gridiron for the next two years. . CHBL GILBERT CEndl Tall, and a scrapper, Carl should furnish some hot competition for Kent next year. He has had the experience, and will strengthen the right wing impressively. - . EL SEGUNDO till , TOBRHNCE C131 The bleachers full, pom poms flying amidst shrill yells, the Marine League football season started oft with a 13-O victory for Torrance. The tirst quarter showed plenty of Tartar power, but the fighting Oilers held time and again when the ball was in play. The second quarter opened, and with Chuck Smith and Max Smith paving the way, lavens smashed over left tackle for a score and conversion. The half ended after a grueling session of power plays, but not until the Tartars had drilled their way deep into the Oilers' pay well, and were grasp- ing for a six-point check. ln a scoreless third quarter, both teams braced, but the Tartars' steam- roller tactics crushed every hope El Segundo ever had. The tinal period started olt with lavens, ace halfback, running 4U yards off tackle to the Oilers' 2-yard line. Signals were called, the ball snapped, and with excellent inter- ference lavens chalked up another tally. The try for extra point went wide of the cross-bar. lavens kicked off, and El Segundo had the ball on Tor- rance's 35-yard line when the gun sounded, ending the game. This game marked the first Marine League injury at the expense of Bill Dennis, star quarterback for El Segundo' Upon being taken to the hospital, he was found to have a slight concussion, but within an hour was permitted to go home. LEUZINGER C73 TOBBQNCE C205 I-lnnexing another victory, Torrance continued its winning streak by down- ing the hard-fighting Leuzinger eleven 20-7. Torrance kicked off to Leuzinger, Winkler-I. Iavens--Bay-C. Smith Harris-Haynes-Mcl-lenry-Kent ' 'l . .BJ 1- ' l73l F O O T B Q L L and took full advantage of a fumble to march over the goal for a score, but failed to convert. The second quarter brought out a determined eleven and, led by foe Hrico, quarterback, Leuzinger rushed down the field for a score and extra point. Trailing by one point, Torrance got tired up and started a march down the field, but the gun went oft, and Torance's hopes were shattered. With one of the most inspiring pep talks ever given by Coach Donahue under their belts, a hard bunch of Tartars came out on the field ready for battle. Led by quarterback Trezise, a charging backfield of Smith, Hmman, and Iavens pounded to a touchdown and conversion, making the score 13-7. ln wild despair, Leuzinger tried a passing attack in the third quarter, but, fully prepared, the Tartars easily handled the situation. The last quarter netted another seven points for Torrance, and the game ended on Leuzinger's 20-yard stripe. NHRBONNEClD TORRHNCEClD They built dream castles of Narbonne's football prowess in the air, but 'l'orrance held the mortgage, until a swift, dashing passing attack in the last few seconds of play netted the Narbonne Gauchos a l2-l2 tie with the cham- pion-bound Torrance Tartars. Surpassing the' 1934 attendance record, 4,000 spectators witnessed a slashing, rip-roaring affair from start to finish. Fighting well and cleanly against an enemy that did likewise, the Tar- tarites shut down Narbonne's passing factory, and were the first to score. With Iavens and Smith pounding and battering the line, ye old pigskin was brought into the pay dirt territory late in the first quarter. Plmman then gave the leather one of his heaves, and it landed right in lavens' outstretched arms, and lack just jogged five yards to a touchdown. Iavens converted, but a Tartar lineman used his hands illegally, and a fifteen-yard penalty resulted. The conversion was tried again, but was not good. ln the second quarter Narbonne woke up and a tally came when the Powers-l-laslem combination scored on a pass, but the conversion was blocked. In a curdling deadlock, both teams went at it hammer and tongs, but neither could score, and the half ended 6-6. lavens kicked off, and the third period was on. There were several ex- Torrance-Narbonne Game ' Hmrnan B gs Q l74l F O C T B Q L L changes of punts, and then Narbonne fumbled on their own 35-yard line, and Torrance recovered. Plmman zipped one into-lavens' arms for a tally, but tighting annulled a deciding play. The quarter was drawing to a close when Mclfadden, star end, snagged a pass for six pointsp the kick was missed for the extra point, and Torrance led l2-6. Staging a phenomenal air-driving attack, the Gauchos traveled from their own 30-yard stripe to the Tartar 20. Fading back, I-laslem threw a short pass to Clayton, who ran over the last white line for the tying score. The conversion was void when both teams were off-side, but play was not re- sumed, as all football games must end ten minutes after sundown, a Marine League ruling. GI-IRDENQ KUJ TORRPINCE C191 Putting on their war shoes, the Torrance Tartars, l935 edition, completed the title chase. In the first quarter Hmman intercepted a pass on the 45-yard line and tossed a lateral to Iavens, who fumbled but recovered, Slug Hen- derson was doing plenty of damage to our line, but was taken out of the game with an injured knee. The Mohicans then took oil the war paint and retreated. Hmman bullet-passed to lavens, who romped across the stripe, but failed to boot the ball between the goal posts. The last half opened with Iavens intercepting a pass thrown by Nelson, and then galloping back 50 yards. On their own 6-yard line, Gardena held. With the ball in Gardena's possession they began a flurry of passes, but our fast-charging line and backtield soon marooned the idea. Torrance's ball. McFadden's flying feet carried him around end for 30 yards to a score, and this time lavens' kick was good. Gardena braced in the fourth quarter, and neither team scored, but it was a game of many things to eulogize, namely, Iohnny McFadden could easily have been named an honorary member of Gardena's backtield because of his consistent smearing of plays before they advanced. Torrance had the pigskin at the Mohican goal posts when the gun cracked, leaving Torrance Co-champs with Narbonne. FOOTBHLL SQUHD FIRST ROW: Luck, Thompson, C. Smith, M. Smith, I, Iavens, Gilbert, C. The charging Eagles swept to a 26-20 victory to win the Pacific-Marine League Championship. The Bell scores. and one conversion came in the first quarter when the Eagles spread their wings and soared over the stunned Tartars. Torrance was minus the services of Iohnny McFadden, who was out with a bad knee, but McHenry, his sub, played a heads-up game, though he lacked the experience of the veteran McFadden. With the score 13-0 against them in the second quarter, it looked like a rout for Torrance, but like a flash the picture changed, and Torrance led for a short time 14-13. lack Iavens, smashing halfback, stole the show with his 10- and 30-yard runs that netted two touchdowns in rapid succession, and then his educated toe converted both times to put the Tartars in front. VV ith Davidson in the initial role of star, Bell crashed and slashed their way to another score and conversion. Trezise received the kickoff, and lateralled to Iavens, who failed to gain. Bell took the ball on Trezise's punt, but fumbled on the 30-yard lineg Trezise recovered, and Chuck Smith, fullback, pounded and cut his way for a Tartar score. The game ended as the Tartars were making a last-minute attempt to score again via the airway. NORTH VS SOUTH Flashing both deception and power, the Northside prep gridders thor- oughly convinced a howling mob of 7l,000, mostly high school lads and lassies, that the Southside boys simply don't know what this game of football is all about. Hnyhow, the Southsiders were on the short end of a 26-13 score in the third annual prep aridiron classic in the Coliseum, the receipts of which were turned over to the P. T. Fl. Milk Fund. Manual Hrts was the only winner for the Southside, upsetting Lincoln's mighty city Championship eleven 7-0 in the finale. Narbonne and San Fernando started it oft with Haslam passing to Powers for a score, but Powers failed to convert. Narbonne kicked oft, and on the first play Bertell scampered 58 yards to a touchdown. Bertell converted. The period ended with Narbonne on the short end of a 6-7 score. The North Hollywood-Bell affair found the ball being flipped forward and laterally with a lone score for North Hollywood. Conversion blocked. Leuzinger looked good, but the Tartars won in a comparatively easy fashion, 562 to 4726. Nady, C.
