THE plains of Kansas are far from the site where the struggle for indepen- dence took place. Yet, at THS there stands a silent reminder of the early years of our nation. Through the efforts of Charles Curtis, the flagstaff of Old lronsides' can be found on the school grounds. The U.S. frigate, officially named the Constitution, was commis- sioned in l798. In the War of 1812, the Constitution distinguished itself in bat- tle. When the frigate was to be scrapped in 1830, the opposition was so great that it became a permanent unit of the U. S. Navy instead. The spar was given to THS by the Navy and dedicated in 1932 with the help of a group of Sea Scouts from the national flagship Kan- san . --p
