Mathematics 'Depth' Appreciation to Basic Studies SYSTEMATIC methods of reasoning and the neces- sity of depth comprehension were accented in both the general and advanced courses from basic math through algebra and geometry to EPSI. Whether or not a student showed a genius rating, he was made aware of the values of the subject in its every- day applications as Well as being stimulated to in- vestigate wide open scientific fields. Concerned with the stronger demands of colleges for stepped-up programs on the junior high and high school levels, a city-wide math study, set up by the department chairman and her committees, gave im- petus to additional teacher training. This in turn was reflected in students' interests, accomplishments, and career plans. As an example, K.U.'s summer camp accepted Judy Bo-denhausen, Ken Wilke, Gary Scott, and Pat Baude for further advancement and the challenge of working with other top students from all over the country. 1 4 QW eToclay's View Includes Science Challenge WHY DOES it tick? How is it measured? Where'd it come from? VVhat's it made of? are questions that confront mankind from the cradle to the grave. Many are completely answered during the lower gradesg others take the maturity of high school in- vestigation, and still others are theoretical and prob- lematical and their answers project into career plan- ning. Troy's forty-five classes of general science, biology, botany, physiology, physics, and chemistry were crowded with students eager to understand the present day's emphasis on both the physical and natural sciences. Special studies in the teaching areas developed new methods in the presentation of the sciences ir1 order to encourage career planning. The Science Seminar, in its second successful year, brought in professional speakers and teams to demonstrate spe- cialized areas. In addition, University Science Days, field trips, and the annual Science Fair stimulated out-of-class experimentation and research. Mr. jones ....,.......
