READING speeds get diagnosed by Gladys Hojnacki, james Bruce, Connie I-Iaughey, Kay Mathes, Tom Gooch, Fred Cunningham. Concentrated Efforts Stress National Trend THAT NOTHING should supersede the teaching of the language arts in the Topeka public schools was the basic intent of the faculty of this vital de- partment. A balanced program emphasized grammar and rhetoric on the one hand and literary highlights on the other. Following the prescribed sophomore and junior courses, seniors chose to review technical English, survey the world's literature, or explore creative writing. Speech training, reading improvement, play production, and journalism were based on particular needs or drew on special talents. Alert to changing goals, the Conant Methodn was tried on all levels, a system of smaller classes and heavy emphasis on writing skills. Once again the sequence classes challenged students to coordi- nate their English and social studies projects. And finally, in an attempt to polish up literary efforts, many students entered poems and essays in local and national contests, while all were encouraged to read as widely as possible to develop an appreciation of the wonderful world of books.
