Cigf Schools y No Challenge Too Big For Men of Dedication THE SMOOTH operation of Topeka's schools from kindergarten through high school depended heavily on the abilities and devoted efforts of the elected School Board members and the appointed adminis- trators. Their responsibilities ranged all the way from repair work to new construction, from curricula to the raising of teaching standards, from salaries to school book rentals-all depending on how the com- munity sees education The success of the November bond issue was a triumph to both the system and individuals, but the job of keeping up with steadily increasing enroll- ment still contributes headaches. The staffing and planning of Topeka XIVSSK has been of special inter- est to this year's student body which will send sev- eral hundred ol its number to the new school. As Topeka high school students become more aware ol present day economics and the demands of life in the 60's, the appreciation of the administrators is increasingly evident. MAINE, Virginia, Kansas. Principal Horace Croxford of Augusta's Cony High greets Mr. Weaver at the 19th Bellamy Award as Miss Margarette S. Miller looks on. Hzglz School Directors Responsive To Needs of Students COMPETENT and abreast of the times, Troy's six- man administrative staff worked diligently to pre- sent both the gaining of knowledge and the adjust- ment to widening horizons as exciting challenges to a large and varied student body. They worked on the humanistic theory that each individual presents a new frontier that must be explored and con- quered just as our forefathers viewed the often un- fathomable West. 1960-61 presented a tremendous problem of enroll- ment and curriculum planning because the organi- zation of the new Topeka West High directly af- fected about 400 members of Troy's student body and influenced plans for the regular 1961-62 schedules in both schools. As Coordinator Extraordinnaireu, Principal Weaver held the reins of academic and guidance fields, scholarship preparation and awards, and the necessary contacts of investigation and discipline that are all a part of the life of a large and progres- sive school. With his confreres he constantly kept in mind the great responsibility of good public rela- tions so necessary in this day when democracy and education are on trial all over the world.
