BOARD OF EDUCATION President ......... Dennis C. Payne Vice-Pres. ........ Merrill H. Wertz Dale Buchanan Fred W. Rausch Jr. Robert R. Schendel Gordon A. Summers Attorney .......... James W. Porter I ...atm AMONG 1959's most rewarding ceremonies for Mr. Godwin and the Board was the dedication of Mcliachron Elementary School. City Schools- Elected Ujjicials Surmount Dz'jicuIties,' Forge Ahead U NTOLD HOURS of devoted efforts are put in daily, weekly, l and yearly by the appointed administrators of the Topeka Public School System and the elected School Board Members. Working for the city's youth, committees and individuals have functioned efficiently and tirelessly to provide the best possible educational facilities from kindergarten through high school graduation. Numerous tasks faced the administration this year as they contemplated the high enrollment of the next decade. The need for additional teachers, up-to-date methods and improved in- struction, replacement of outmoded equipment, and more class- rooms made heavy drains on educational funds. Undaunted by the setback of the defeat of the School Bond Proposal, this de- termined group has gathered momentum. As .the 1956-60 year closes, new plans are underway to complete the building pro- gram, to place greater emphasis on the peculiar educational needs of today's young people, and to raise teaching standards with accompanying higher salaries-all without the loss of the personal side ol' education that has come to be expected by Topekans. Although most students at Topeka High are not intimately aware of the scope of administrative problems, it is to their credit that they know that their appreciation will need to be shown in terms of higher scholastic records. TOPEKA'S top educator chats with Mrs. George Docking at the annual Future Teachers' tea at the 'Governor's Mansion. ll
