Asa Salvador is showing David Dalton, senior at A U M Asa F. Salvador, the second instructor of auto mechanics at Toms River High School, reintroduced the auto-mechanics curriculum in 1937. It had been discontinued in 'l933 after a two-year trial. He developed an interest in mechanics while using farm machinery on his father's farm in Iowa. This early interest led him to take extension courses at Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, where he learned more about the care and maintenance of farm equipment. During his army service in World War 1, Mr. Salvador operated caterpillar tractors. Following the war he came to Toms River, where he worked eighteen years at the auto- mechanics tradeg during fifteen of the years he was a service manager for Ford dealers. Asa Salvador, who earned his teaching certificate at Rutgers University, attended several training schools sponsored by car manufacturers. He said that one of his most interesting and worthwhile school ex- periences was attending a summer session at the General Motors Institute at Flint, Michigan. Mr. Detwiler made the following state- ment about Mr. Salvador 's twenty-two years of service: 'Mr. Asa Salvador has been an able and efficient teacher in our vocational school's department of auto mechanics. He is a teacher of high standards and demands high caliber work from all his pupils. We shall all miss him very much.
