The fortunes of war are not all bad, and we are enjoying some of the good fortune in our Vocal Klusic Department and throughout the school system, Blrs. Vera Theiler, who graciously agreed to come to the aid of the school, is directing the Glee Clubs and Grade School hlusic this vear. The Glee Clubs were organized in three units this year: a hlixed Chorus. a Boys' Glee Club, and a Freshman Girls' Glee Club. lfach group has enjoyed a successful and pleasant year. A concert given by the Glee Clubs and the Band at Christmas time consisted of many beau- tiful carols. Ar this time llrs. Theiler presented a cantata Christmas Street, performed by Grade School children. The war greatly affected our lioys' Glee Club when we lost three members to the armed forces. Gordon hlitchell, who was one of our most popular soloists, has joined the Army. John Boyle, our best baritone, is in lfncle Sams Navy and is now adding his fine voice to the Great Lakes Naval Choir. .lack Chvala, a popular member of the Club all through his High School days. is now in the Navy Air Corps. Nlrs. Theiler presented a special program by the Boys' Glee Club as a farewell gesture. Ir was a particularly gay and clever arrangement, and we needed it-for most of us were feeling sad at the prospect of losing so many of our well-loved tellow students. April 20. the Cllee Clubs gave a beautiful and colorful Concert of the linited Nationsf' in the Auditorium. lt included songs and pageantry of England, Mexico, the Pacific lslands, China, Russia, and America. The South Sea lsland number brought special cheers and applause from the boys in the front row! The unanimous approval of the city and school proves the concert was a huge success, thanks to the direction of Klrs. Theiler and her ability to inspire her Glee Clubs to do their finest work for her. ,211
