TQ H 51 lk 1' Published bythe Student Body of Tomah High School Tomah, Wisconsin Volume Twenty- Two The thoughts of the Seniors in the last few weeks of high school are apt to wander over the past four years. The purpose of this HAMOT is to immortalize such events as-registration as a L'freshie . . . loyalty to the XVhite and Coldl' at basketball games . . . end of the nine weeks and those dreaded report cards . . . ah! junior Prom and that long cherished formal . . . the three minutes between classes to pass notes and say Hin to the current one-and- only . . . opening one's locker to be greeted by books, magazines, and ink bottles . . . the colossal performance of the Senior Class Play . . . distribution of HAMOTS and then those final plans for a future in the services, as a defense worker, or in the gay role of 'ijoe Collegev and Betty Co-Edn. DEDICATED TO THE FUTURE has a particularly significant interpretation today. Although the phrase- THE FUTURE-is an uncertain and incomprehensible one, we of the student body have visionary outlines of the post-war fruits we are preparing to gather. YVe shall not be subdued until our goal is won-a world order based upon the democratic ideals which we have practiced so naturally during our high school careers. Building for THE FUTURE is a gradual process, block by block, of continuous schooling. The foundation, begun in kindergarten, is augmented by the knowledge procured in grade school. XVhen the groundwork is estab- lished, we enter the secondary institution, high school, where our democratic ideals are founded and molded into constructive blocks by the educational program. Today, more than ever before, the benefits and re- sponsibilities of the American youth are stressed. It is here we first come to realize the importance of THE FUTURE. By careful building and a motivation gained from our ideals We near the completion of our imaginary block-by-block construction. The blocks we build in high school are our preparation for THE FUTURE. It is our responsibility to choose whether We are merely to live in it or challenge its structure and participate in its governmental functions. . . nib.: Declication Scenic View Service Personnel DIVISION I Sports DIVISION II Activities 5 DIVISION III Administration Faculty Class Officers Seniors S Underclassmen Honor Students Diary Patrons and Advertisers CONTENTS 4 6 7 8-23 24-47 50 51-52 53 54-61 62-68 69 T0-72 3-100 S 1 11.11 11 1111 ll 111 Ill 18 1111 111111111 1.1111 1 11111111 . ff . 111 11 1 111 XX dl 111111 1111111111 111111 11111111 111 1111111 1.11111t1 111111111111 .11111 1f1.111111t1S 111111 X1 1 1 1 Ill I1 111 1 1111111111 t111 1.11111111 11111111111 11111111111 X1 111 1110 111111 1.1111 11 t11 111111 Ill 1 1111 111111 1111 . 1 Ill 11111 1 11111 11111 1111111 1111 t111 11111111 111 t111 111 Student 11111111111 rs D111 1L11 IDL! 1-.1 N11111 A1111 C IIS JN M1111 C1111111 11111111 A117111 A1r C11111s D111 XI 11 L 111 s'111N A111111 KU JI Ros 1 N111 I1 1101118 S11111l1xs 1 XIIII1 I1 X1 X1 111181111111 1111111111 X111 L S N11111 I S -Xrmy an Irv fn' xlllllllll 111111111 1 IS 1N111x1 f 11111111 x Xlllll III f'11r11s 11 111111- 1 L 11111 A117111 1111111111 r S1111 LL A1 171 I1 ll 1 11 1111111 We C 1111.101 5111111111 11111111111 F11 1xL 1.11111 11111 S11111.1- F111x11 D11111 L S M11r1111'1 xftlflllff Alf C 11r11s 11 -RAC Xrmy Azr C'11r11s THI.' From last yearis undefeated team only one senior graduated. so this yearis prospects were unusually good. In order to hox in Toinah lligh School the student must maintain passing grades and achieve an almost perfect physical condition. It is customary to hold elimination houts early in the season to determine the team memhers. The hoxers who compete must haye put in a reasonahle amount of instructixe practice. Each person is matched with someone within four pounds of his own weight and nearly equal in ability. BASEBALL STARS AIM TO HIT Because of the shortening of the 1941-42 school year the baseball season was considerably ab- breviated. There was enough time between tests to play only three games. The first game was a warm-up with the city team. Paced by a home run by Gillette and good pitching in the clutches by Kenneth DeGorah, the Indians came out with the long end of a 5-2 score. The score of the 1Vestby game, on the home diamond, looked like a free-for-all. 1Vestby led at the end of the fifth inning 6-0. By the end of the sixth inning Tomah tied the score at 6 all. Two errors in the seventh inning accounted for as many runs for Wfestby who won, The score of the Sparta game looked like the score of an exciting football game, 13-1. Sparta took the large score with two home runs with bases loaded. This game, played at Sparta, was the last of a brief season. The game scheduled with La Crosse Logan was called off because of rain. At the end of the season ballots were cast for a captain. The three players chosen were John Graf, a sophomore, and VVarren Gillette and Al- fred Strozewski, seniors. Boys who won letters were: Kenneth DeGorah, 1Varren Gillette, Claire Arity, Robert Cole, Scott Roeder, Alfred Stro- zewski, john Graf, john llischette, Leon Sllisler, james Fell, and George lleser. .fr nad! This was the remedy given by Bliss XVaters to her tumblers in case one of them was dizzy as a result of too many rolls or cartwheels. Unlike the other school clubs, who meet every second and fourth Tuesday in the month, the tumblers hold their meetings every Tuesday evening. Besides the regular meetings, these girls practice several times a week after school. There was no tumbling team last year, so this is the first year of tumbling for all the members. However, they all enjoyed it so much that most of them plan to join again next year. The girls Back Row: J. Wilson. J. Kuehl, H. Muhle- thaler, R. Schroeder. R. Huber. Second Row: N, Grif- fin. A. The tumblers put on an act at a mass meeting in Ianuary, and also at the Carnival. At Christmas time a party was held, gifts were exchanged, and a lunch was served. This organization is for stu- dents taking commercial courses, who plan on entering the business world in the future. Each meeting of the club was planned by a program committee which consisted of three or four members. At most meetings, a speaker from one of the downtown business places was pres- ent. These various speakers told students about their particular fields of business and what was expected of workers in that business. This not only helped to provide an interesting program, but also helped students understand more clearly how businesses are run and with what problems they are confronted. Several members of the club helped in the telegram booth at the carnival. This was spon- sored by Mrs. Krueger. The members of the club presented a Com- mercial Club Play , which dealt with business life. Special attention was also given to personality this year. It was felt that it is as important as ability in holding a job. Officers are: president, Joyce Burroughsg vice- president, Erwin Horningg secretary-treasurer, Neva Boederg and club re Jorter, Rosalia Fischer. l SCIENTIFIC MINDS SEE STARS AND SOLVE PUZZLES The Math Club has had two sponsors this year, Miss johnson and Blrs. The Home Economics girls are not the only students who wear aprons in Tomah High School. The boys in the Industrial Arts Department are just as much at home in aprons as are the girls. There are one hundred and twenty boys in this department. It consists of three freshmen classes, two sophomore classes, and one junior class. The freshmen classes do mechanical drawing and general shopwork. The sophomore classes do advanced mechani- cal drawing and machine drawing, and advanced shopwork. The work of the junior class consists of gen- eral shopwork and metal work. They also do maintenance work Qmaking useful articles for the school and keeping it in general repairj. Mr. Stockton is the teacher of Industrial Arts. It is an elective subject which seems to be very popular with the boys of our high school. The boys' mothers like it, too, as they fall heir to some of their sons, works, which include shelves, towel-holders, and other useful articles. This is a valuable subject, as it 'ielps toward industrial work in the future. Conservation Club Back Row: R. Ninneman. J. Drew. C. Hemsey. R. Jensen. D. Arity, D. Wettstein, M. Prell. P. Utility bags, games, ash trays, and Christmas boxes were among the articles made or collected for the sun room at Camp McCoy hospital. Money is earned for projects of the group by means of donations, card parties open to the public, and matinee dances. By contributing to a collection all students in high school become members of the Junior Bed Cross. Active members of the organization in- clude the officers and two representatives chosen from each class. Students who were members of the Junior lied Cross Council this year were: Grace Brown. presidentg Therese Donovan, vice- presidentg Mary Lou Rose, treasurerg and Bev- erly Brohaugh, secretary. The Pre-flight Club was newly organized this year. The club was started by Mr. Nelson. and its purpose is to help students who wish to take up flying after they have graduated. This organization is especially helpful to those students who will be inducted into the army im- mediately after graduating, for it gives them knowledge beforehand of what they will be ex- pected to know if they wish to be aviators. The students study the groundwork which is essential before becoming a pilot. They are given prob- lems which are similar to the problems given in the army. Officers are: president. Battles of Debate Plans for the Future If you look up the Word 'zieimte- in the dic- tionary, you will find that it comes from the old French word debatre which means to engage in strife or combat. YVhen Iohn Fick or Shirley Franz or any of the other affirmative strike the speakers' stand and declare, A Federal Union of the YVorld must be established after this war! you realize that the original meaning of the word has not been lost. After the negatives return with strong arguments against the Federal Union you know the meaning of the word backward and foreward. The keen rivalry is all in the gameg it means that Americais system of competition will bring out the best that is in American youth. 'O 4 Evidence that young America is looking to- ward the future is seen in the question for debate this year, Should a Federal YVorld Union be es- tablished after this war?'i Both the affirmative and the negative agree that we must decide now what kind of world we want when this war is over. The affirmative has given battle to the negative team all over the school, and the negative has put up a good defense. The second squad shows promise of becoming a powerful force in the vocal battles of debate in next vear's campaigns. . t 1. This served as an initiation. and it was so successful that it was chosen to be given for the public in the program with the real contest play. Privately Printed. Several student-directed plays were given this year. some of which were given at the Tomah U. U. center. Students also directed several radio it plays and presented them to the club. These plays were given over the loud speaker, and sound effects were used. The club sponsored a dance on February 26th, which was given after the Sparta-Tomah basket- ball game. Students from both high schools were invited. In December the members went on a sleigh- ride party. This party was given as a Christmas function. The officers are as follows: president. Jessie Palmerg vice-president. Richard Heilmang secre- tary-treasurer. Shirley Franz: and sergeant-ab arms. Nlary Scheurich. 1. Ann Drew, who was our representative at the state contest last year, gives a few words of advice to the future declaimers IN ORATORY, READING, AND DECLAMATIONS Perhaps increased activities and work on the part of the students was the reason for the smaller number of people taking part in foren- sics this year. In spite of the changed conditions competition was as keen as ever with all the usual contests held. The enrollment this year in foren- sics, including extemporaneous reading, oratory, declamation, and extemporaneous speaking was one-third that of other years. The number of students taking part in extem- poraneous speaking was slightly smaller than it has been in previous years. Students in extem- poraneous speaking this year were, Iohn Fick, Clayton Hemsey, Ceorge Stockton, Eugene Mar- ten, Marvin Wagner, Lewis Christiansen, Rich- ard Stockton, Howard Von Haden, and Philip Mork. The extemporaneous speakers talk on such topics of current interest as taxation, the de- mands of India for independence, a possible fourth term for President Roosevelt, and other political problems. A number of these students won ratings last year. Philip Mork, who was one of them, won an rating at Westby on the subject, From Burma to the Assam Roadf' Mr. Gunning, who coaches extemporaneous speaking, also coaches oratory. Last year two of his orators won ratings at Westby. John Drew received an AD rating, and Kermit Helmke won a B rating. The students who participated in oratory this year were Robert Ninneman, Iohn Drew, james Ebert, Stanley Witz, Thomas Rezin, and Kermit Helmke. 1. WE FIND N0 CPRRENT WARTIME RATIONS The division which had the smallest number of participants in comparison with previous years was declamation, with six girls taking part this year. Students giving declamations this year in the serious division were Kathryn Jean Guhl, Mary Lou Rose, and Darlene Janssen. The three girls who gave declamations in the humorous class were Jeanette Tralmer, Patricia Ostermick, and Ellen Bursinger. Two of the above men- tioned students represented Tomah High School in humorous declamation last year. They were Jeanette Tralmer and Patricia Ostermick, both of whom received BU ratings. There were eight students taking part in ex- temporaneous reading this year. Material for the reading contest consisted of articles on the inter- national situation. The students participating Were Helen Johnson, Elizabeth Peth, Marie Sch- roeder, Jeanette Peth, Shirley Franz, Eleanor Mc- Kean, Therese Donovan, and Beverlv NVarnke. In this instance the sophomores had the largest representation. Students selected from the four forensic groups to represent Tomah High School at the League Contest at Black River Falls on March 30, were: Patricia Ostermick, Ellen Bursinger, Kathryn Jean Cuhl, Mary Lou Rose, Therese Donovan, Shirley Franz, John Drew, Robert Ninneman, John Fick, and Philip Mork. The winners from the League Contest went to the District Contest at La Crosse. This District Contest was held on April District Contest winners were then sent to the State Contest. The Photography Club was organized at the beginning of the school year by Mrs. Hehnke to give students an opportunity to take better pic- tures, print and develop them. John Drew was elected president, Clayton Hemsey, vice-presi- dent, and Jeanette Meyer, secretary-treasurer. The fundamentals of photography were ex- plained to club members in 21 talk given by Mr. Luckenbill. A dark room was then equipped in the basement of the school and used frequently by the amateur photographers. 40 ' mill! si N I ,S 1 A Sr' 1. -1.f'i ' 1 1 A-V9l.'M,,,,A,,0, ,:,...-.,.. 3 --ilmru 1851?-S' 1 I, 4961152 A , ' nr Qzswlf ,Q ,mgwfffif .1111-11 ' ' f ' 7 :ze 1.. Publishing the Hamot in a war year with emphasis upon economy and the requirements of rationing was a problem for the staff. After a successful carnival and advertising campaign had been con- cluded, the budget was established. Bationing regulations affecting photographic equipment and en- gravers, supplies of metal made a carefully planned layout essential. Because of these factors the decision to publish this year-book was made with a new and serious purpose and with consideration for the value of an annual as a record of activities in a time of crisis. Paging Betty Schoolmatel Paging Betty Schoohnateln the messenger from the telegraph booth at the Carnival called. After a hasty search of the school building, the messenger found Betty and went on to page another. Upon opening the telegram, she read something like this: Hi Bet, Isn't this Carnival super? How's about meeting me at El Morroco for some ice cream and then we-'ll make the side shows to- gether? joe. Betty hurried to El Morroco and sure enough. there was joe. They decided to visit the Museum with all its oddities first, then a movie on fishing, the County Fair, where they tried their luck at making baskets and knocking over milk bottlesg the telegraph office to send a few unsigned telegramsg and finally the study hall show, Coldilocks The Door. After visiting all of these side shows, they had just enough time to get to the Main Show, Stage Door Canteen. There they saw the best of tal- ent from Tornah High. Camp McCoy, and the Tomah Radio School. Finally, they snatched a couple of hot dogs and hurried to buy their tickets for the jitney Dance. BY YOYR SINGING FOR FLW TOP PICTURE-Back Row: M.
