More people have turned out for sports, competitions, or just being spectators. More than ever the people of the valley have shown support for our school, and I hope we give them more reason to in the future. The student council is a vital part of the governing process of the school. We at Tolt Junior Senior High School are fortunate to have good student leadership, and as a result have a smooth-running organization. - Mr. Rice - jsQ f vC ' m ' I I Left, top row: Mr Rice, S Roetcisoender, S McKenzie, T. The lack of experience on the part of the Tolt players affected their win loss record; however there was a tremendous improvement in playing by the total team. Of the 25 players only ten were returning athletes; therefore Tolt has a young inexperienced team. However, I think that the growing talent and experience of these players will help win more ball games in the future. Coach Hee. 68 FALL SQUAD Greta Potter, Wendy Keizer, Deanne Shafer, and Tracy Vance This year's varsity cheerleaders did a good job cheering for the teams. The fall cheerleaders cheered our football team to a homecoming championship, and the girls cross country team to a state trophy. Then during the winter four more cheerleaders were elected to join the squad. These along with the other cheerleaders helped lead both basketball teams to the District finals. Coomer, while on his way to state, won a lot of races and broke a lot of records. In the league meet at Coupeville, Coomer took the individual honors while the Tolt team took second. At the District meet a week later, Coomer again beat his nearest competitor and raced to first place. This enabled Marc to qualify for state. The Tolt team failed to qualify with a seventh place finish. Two weeks later Marc very nearly took state, but was outsprinted at the end. The tough Demon settled for fourth place. Next year promises to be a good one for the Demons, they only lose one runner, Senior Jim Wandler. 70 1 Back Row Shelley Kovacs, Laura Owen, Diane Rearden, Cindy Henry, Helen Loutsis, Coach Jane LeMome Front Row Heidi Hanson Sally Paulsen, Carol Huffman, Martha Rush GIRLS BRING HOME STATE TROPHY In the tradition of excellence the TOLT girls cross country team proved their ability in the state's first A girls cross country meet. They took the 2nd place trophy, losing to Mt. Baker 66-70. In the District 1 meet at SVCC TOLT took home the trophy, beating Mt Baker 46-52, and placed 4 girls in the top 10. TOLT was the only full team in the Cascade A League, and 3 are needed for a League Championship. TOLT's veteran team of girls includes 4th yr. Sr. Cindy Henry, 3rd yr. runners Martha Rush, Sally Paulsen, Helen Loutsis, Diane Rearden, Shelley Kovacs, Soph. Laura Owen, and Frosh. Heidi Hanson. Next year's team promises a better showing at the state meet. - Jane LeMoine. The 1977 Tolt Demon football team under first-year coaches Nowadnick, Zeiger, and Harding carved out a 4-6 season record, 3-4 in Cascade A League competition. This was the most successful season in many years and prospects are even better for next year with many returning lettermen. Tolt started off its season by winning an overtime thriller from Chimicum. Following two tough losses to Vashon and Granite Falls, the Demons came from 18 points behind to defeat Kings Garden 21-18. Concrete tripped up the Demons but Tolt came right back with a victory over Darrington and a Homecoming win over Coupville. The Demons lost their last three games but showed good promise for next year. Tony Berens made the all-conference team as an offensive end, while Charlie Duke made the team on both offense and defense. Scot Hurlbut and Bill Forgey were elected captains, while Charlie Duke was selected the Best Blocker, Kirk Roetcisoender received the Most Improved award. Mike Nelson was voted by his teammates as the winner of the Most Inspirational award. -Coach Nowadnick George Bick, Charlie Duke, Dan White, Pat Boyle, Bill Rush, Coach Nowadnick. WRESTLERS The 1977-78 edition of the Tolt High School wrestling team produced several individual stars along with a state tournament qualifier for the first time since 1969, Charlie Duke. It was quite a performance for a first-year wrestler. The team made up for its lack of numbers with desire and youth that will help to build the program in the years ahead. With a good group of young men returning, next year's team will continue to grow and develop. Judy Neibauer Lon Austin, Debbie Hitchcock, Kim McGlauflm, Terri Lynn, Monica Board Monica M phy Susan Palmer, Conn.e Underwood, Teresa Maciel, Colleen Hitchcock, Laura Owen, Diane Rearden, Shan Laird, and Coach Hee. The team was comprised of five returning players with a majority of the players new to the sport. There were enough players for two teams; and at many times two different games were played. The final standing for the team was 11 wins, and 2 losses. The team played exceptionally well for a new team. At times they were able to run away with the score, at other times they just maintained enough control to keep the lead. This is a promising team with a lot of talent, therefore, they should continue to succeed in the future. Best of luck to you always. w Coach, Doug Hall, Martha Rush, Debbie Neilson, Carolyn Sato, Susan Palmer, Lisa Showers, Lisa Rusch, Monica Murphy, Barbie Board, Helen Loutsis, Pam Manning, Diane Rearden, Not Pictured: Monica Board. A middle season slump, however, brought their season to a close with a 6-7 league record. Highlights for the season include victories over the two top teams in the league-Langley and Granite Falls. Finally, the Demons earned their way into their first District tournament by beating Concrete 44-40-a team which had earlier trounced the Demons by 16 points. Ted Herzog, Dennis Peterson, Scott Aronica, Doug Stough, Coach Zieger 1977-78 VARSITY The Demons this year held an overall 13 win 10 loss record, but finished off league play at 10-3. This league record is one of the best Tolt has had since becoming a Class A school. Led by Captain Dan Rindal, who was named to the All-League team for the 2nd year in a row, the Demons went to the league playoffs where they beat Coupeville by 1 point, but lost to Concrete by 3. The 4th place finish at league led the Demons to Mt. Vernon and the District Tournament. The Demons faced a strong Lynden team in the first game and were unable to overcome the Lion's height advantage. Next Tolt met Sultan. It was a good fight, but the Demons came out on bottom. Seniors who contributed to the success of the season were: Greg Bowe, a strong rebounder; John Kaelin, a team leader who was injured midway through the season; Dennis Peterson, a super point guard; and Dan Rindal, the leading scorer and rebounder on the Demon team. Juniors played an important role on the team. They were Scott Aronica, a 2-year starter; George Anderson, a starter and tough rebounder; Tony Berens, the 2nd leading scorer for the team; Scot Roetcisoender, a strong defensive player; and Stan Austin, an excellent prospect for next year. Two Sophomores, Ted Herzog and Doug Stough, round out the team. Watch out for next year! SEASON RECORD Tolt 82 .
