Through education, John Glenn conquered space--with the assistance of his less romantic but nevertheless highly educated co-workers. A sizable faction of the current crops of teenagers says with disgust, Education Bah! It just doesn't send me! Nix on that. It sent Glenn, didn't it? Way out, too. There is no doubt but what formal education has pro- gressed tremendously since its first inception. Some people question the authenticity of a number of the benefits for which modern educational innovation have been given credit. That great strides have been made, however, is hardly refutable. One finds contemporary education in- finitely more complex than was its former counterpart. Undeniably, scientific discoveries will constantly render obsolete many of the presently held concepts and philoso- phies in the educational field, as elsewhere. To keep abreast of technological and scientific advances, educa- tional practices will continue to evolve as they always have. The evolution of education is facetiously illustrated by the following quip: Modem education has greatly simplified the three R's—from reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic to rah, rah, rah. Just because education is often the object of our jest in no way detracts from the significance of the fact that it has risen to lofty prominence in the ultra progressive so- ciety of our nation, and that it becomes of increasingly greater importance each passing day. The ones of us who subscribe to the mirthful philosophy, It ain't the school I don't like. It's the principal of the thing, might consider Aristotle's statement: 'The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet. If we will start at the base of the tree and work diligently upward, ignoring the scraped elbows and barked shins, through education we will find ourselves enjoying the sweet rli TttUtgs, and iamj Ucw , duaritonTotbuj . . . kb Tobh of Owttewfe FmmW......... Student Government The student government of the Tolt Demons has been, this year, an exotic brew with the steady hand of the Demon President, Chad Clinton, presiding over the kettle. He has wielded his ladle with great precision, measur- ing out accurate portions of work to his numerous assistant chefs in such a manner as to inspire initiative and friendly rivalry; the gratifying result has been that they have all striven to prove themselves connoissures of their demoniac cuisine. Though the pot, bubbling vigorously, has at times threatened to boil over, the President's tempering influence has prevented any catastrophe and the brew has become a finished product of excellent consistency, spiked with an exuberant blend of vivid imagination and an aversion to a plain bill-of-fair for the demons' diet. The romantic mixture has more than amply sustained the great vitality of the energetic Demons as they frisked about on their annual escapades and exciting forays. A.S.B. No national student organization enjoys greater freedom of self-government under adult counsel and guidance, than the FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA. Organized in November, 1928, it has served to motivate and vitalize the systematic instruction offered to students of vocational agriculture. The foundation upon which the FFA is built, includes leadership and character development, sportsmanship, cooperation, service, thrift, scholarship, improved agriculture, organized recreation, citizenship and patriotism. Pins are awarded to members as a badge of achievement. The Honor Society tries to award a scholarship each year to some deserving senior who plans to go to college. Mrs. Randlev, the organization advisor, guides the club in its activities. The Honor Society may take off dne day from school in each semester for approved activities. The first semester day is usually used for an educational trip and the second semester day is usually used in conjunction with a week-end for a three day camping trip for members. 36 Ed Moore, President Left to right: Judy Owens; Linda Noble; David Moore; Mary Rothschild. For the first time in its history, Tolt High School established a debate team. Not content to start on a partial basis, Tolt's Debate Team participated as a full time member of the Kingco Debate League. In- experience keynoted early season debates, but as league competition drew to a close, the Debate Team had definitely shown that they were capable of competing on an equal basis with their Kingco rivals. Tolt debaters unanimously agreed that, while debate required a great deal of work, much was learned and the experience definitely worth while. Q u Cb C6ut On a cool, cloudy day late in September, three Senior boys and two Junior boys met with our principal, Mr. Patterson, and one of our faculty, Mr. Smith. The topic of discussion - — an organization to perform certain jobs pertaining to various aspects of sports events and assemblies. We undertook the task of forming our organization, drawing up a constitution, and beginning our activities. During this time, our membership was in- creased to four Seniors and four Juniors, our activities included organizing the parking lot, maintaining litter receptacles in necessary locations on the school grounds and in the park, policing the floor at Bas- ketball games, and other jobs related to the organization of school activities. Under the patient and able guidance of our advisor, Mr. Smith, we grew in leader- ship, responsibility, and appreciation of the opportunity to be of service to others when- ever possible. 44 Service Club in action. 1962 Janet Barker, Frosh Princess; Sid Mattson, Soph. The week followed with a number of activities including a sweatshirt day, slave day for the football players and of course yells and songs every day. The whole affair was climaxed with the effigy burning and the big Game. PIC SKIN BALL was the theme for the homecoming dance that set the finishing touches on the week. The senior class sponsored the dance which began directly after the game and a good time was had by all dancing to the music of Rufe Weston. The inspired performance delivered by the cast produced a smashing success. The persistent hard work of the seniors culminated in two evenings of creditable entertainment. The brothers Moore, Don, and Ed skillfully portrayed their roles as young businessmen on a vacation. Donna Isom and Cary Remlinger, as the gangster team, could be said to have stolen the show except for the equally hilarious feats of Tom Solberg as Freckles, Beth Hackenbruch and Eileen Zylstra as the spinsters, Lois Ronnei as the maid, Chad Clinton as Terror and Kay Speer and Lilia Renfro as the stylish young ladies. Morton Anderson, as the shy Sylvester Smith, invested this quiet role with a superb interpretation which should have been seen by the talent scouts.
