We said goodby to the Philippines and came home by way of the San Bernadino Straits fthe scene of the last bat- tleship a ct i o n of World War ID, Pagan Island, in the Marianas Archipella- go, and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where we visited for three days . During our return trip across the Pa- cific we were called upon to provide services to two groups of destroyers en- route to the Western Paci- fic. Upon our arrival in Long Beach on 15 Novem- ber 1966 we could proudly relate to families, loved ones, and friends , our stories of the customs and people of the F ar East and of the part that we had played in the Viet Nam conflict . After each per- iod, except one, TOLOVANA returned to the Philippines to refuel. We were in Subic Bay so often that We thought Olongapo, the city on the shores of Subic Bay just outside the gates of the Naval Station, was our ho me po rt in Asia. We did get a chance to visit other ports although typhoon Susan frustrated our attempt to visit Kao-I-Isiung, Tiawan fl-Tormosaj and only one third of the crew got ashore there. The disappointment of c u r t a i l e d liberty in Kao-I-Isiung was forgotten during a six day visit to the Briti s h C rown Colony ofHong Kong. September found us at Sasebo for a ten day upkeep period and there at Yokose fuel pier, on September 30, 1966, Captain Carl W. Gronemann, jr., U.S. Navy, relieved Captain Robert P. Coogan, U.S. Navy, of command of the U.S .S . TOLOVANA CAO 645 . With Captain Cronemann in command the ship again returned to Vietnamese waters to fulfill commitments for the month of October.
