After each per- iod, except one, TOLOVANA returned to the Philippines to refuel. We were in Subic Bay so often that We thought Olongapo, the city on the shores of Subic Bay just outside the gates of the Naval Station, was our ho me po rt in Asia. We did get a chance to visit other ports although typhoon Susan frustrated our attempt to visit Kao-I-Isiung, Tiawan fl-Tormosaj and only one third of the crew got ashore there. The disappointment of c u r t a i l e d liberty in Kao-I-Isiung was forgotten during a six day visit to the Briti s h C rown Colony ofHong Kong. On the fourteenth day of May 1966 T OLO- VANA left Long Beach, California carrying the load to Southeast Asia. Many months of preparation and training are required to pre- pare a ship for a deployment. The value of this t r aining was demonstrated by TOLO- VANA'S ability to meet all her commitments while deployed. This ship has built her fine reputation by the efforts of all hands . Every man in TOLOVANA can take pride in the per- formance of his ship and the knowledge that the duties assigned have been done Well. To build this record has required long hours at replenishment stations day and night. Being on time at the right place with our load of liquid cargo has been our contribution to the War in Viet Nam--a vital contribution! We are proud that We have efficiently done our part to defend our country by keeping the fleet on station. ,,:-r.1m...mnmmnm:w , ,

We said goodby to the Philippines and came home by way of the San Bernadino Straits fthe scene of the last bat- tleship a ct i o n of World War ID, Pagan Island, in the Marianas Archipella- go, and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where we visited for three days . During our return trip across the Pa- cific we were called upon to provide services to two groups of destroyers en- route to the Western Paci- fic. Upon our arrival in Long Beach on 15 Novem- ber 1966 we could proudly relate to families, loved ones, and friends , our stories of the customs and people of the F ar East and of the part that we had played in the Viet Nam conflict . Th e s e experi- ences, the people that we met, and the different customs that we observed will always be a source of pride and fond memories . 5 N
