PIONEER 1966 Tolleston High School Gary, Indiana Spotlight On 66” Faculty members present Assistant Principal's wile with a bouquet of roses. 2 The Senior Class would like to welcome you to their Spotlight On 66 . Throughout the years Tolleston students have had many exciting and thrilling moments that we will try to recapture in our Spotlight. Just a few of those moments were the winning of our Homecoming game, outstanding achievements in the scholastic and sports fields and last but not least the groundbreaking for our new school. Several students participated in outstanding scholastic achievements such as the Indiana University Honor Program for foreign language students, the induction of 16 members into the Honor Society, participations of more Tolleston students in the Gary Advanced study Program, and the high achievement of several students who won National Merit Scholarship. Several outstanding athletic achievements were made by the track, football, basketball, and tennis teams. Our track boys have started in track meets over the entire county, while our football boys have been on All-City, All- Conference, and All-State teams. The basketball team wasn’t up to par but they were recognized for their achievements. The organizations sponsored entertainment throughout the community. The annual club dances, Hi-Y Talent Show, Sweetheart Dance, Class Parties, Homecoming, Football-O- Rama, Basketball, Tournaments, Prom, and the Pioneer Distribution Dance, were all promoted by full co-operation of the student body and clubs. The spotlight shines on a couple enjoying the latest dance. School Life.........................6 Academic Life......................16 Administration.....................30 Seniors ...........................42 Organizations......................72 Sports ...........................120 Underclassmen.....................135 3 School Life Was Fun In August a storm knocked down several trees in the park that handicapped the early arrival of students. Keeping the halls clean was one of the many Jobs of Mrs. McFarland. Football action proved to be only one of the many activities which created excitement. Many Activities Prevailed Well dressed Seniors checked their wraps prior to an evening of fun and entertainment at the Sen- ior Class Party. 5 Although the students tried relentlessly to elevate their academic averages, they found time to participate in extra-curricular activ- ities. The spotlight shines on the Slave Sale, Hi-Y Sweetheart Dance. Military Ball, Foot- ball. Track, and Art Exhibit. Although every student could not participate in every activity, the ones who were not able to take an active part seemed to derive enjoyment from the success of their classmates. The many sports events attracted a large portion of our student body. With these many activities the students learned to coordinate the Social and scholastic development. In addition to these activities, students who participated in chorus, band, cheer- leading. basketball, football, track, and wres- tling found themselves spending countless hours practicing to perfect their performance. Now the Spotlight on 1966 slowly fades away from school activities and shines on other phases of school life. Spotlight On School Football Homecoming Mr. Carrablne and Mrs. Hodgers congratulate the Homecoming Queen for 1965-66. The finalists wait nervously for the announcing of the Queen. 8 Highlighted The Season The Football Homecoming highlighted the seasons fall activities this year. Follow- ing the customs of the past years, we had our annual Homecoming Queen Contest. Over fifty girls ran for Homecoming Queen 1965-66, but only 8 finalists were chosen. The candidates worked faithfully to turn in money and to get additional tickets from Coach Stearnes. Finally, the big night arrived and four big convertibles drove eight finalists around Tolleston’s Field. Then the most thrilling moment of all arrived, Joyce Ann Gregory was chosen Homecoming Queen 1965-66. A crown, a leather coat, and a bouquet of roses were her prizes, while the runners- up received leather coats, sweaters, and bouquets. The Queen and her court rode off the field to become one of the highlights of 1965-66. The Queen received many con- gratulations and wishes for a very happy reign. The two runners-up in the Queens court were Olivia Williams and Alice Lyles. Homecoming Queen 1965-66 Joyce Ann Gregory Football-O-Rama Stimulated Students Football-O-Rama contestants wave excitedly to the crowd. As the summer came to an end school was atxmt to start, the Football-O- Rama was the first activity, and it lifted the spirits. The eight Gary public schools played against one another in the kick-off festivities of the football season. Four girls were chosen from each school to run for Football- O-Rama Queen. The two finalists were chosen according to the amount of money turned in. This year two Juniors were the finalists. Our Football-O- Rama Queen was Miss Linda McCoy. The game was very exciting, although the final score was zero to zero. The other scores of the Football-O-Rama games resulted as: Horace Mann 7 Roosevelt 0 Lew Wallace 7 Froebel 7 Edison 0 Emerson 0 The eight reigning Foot- O-Rama Queens pose hap- pily for their pictures. This year, as in the past, Tolleston students at- tended their class parties with enthusiasm. The freshmen attended their class party and enjoyed themselves to their hearts content. The sophomores whirled the night away at their class party while the Juniors enjoyed a divine evening at their class party, ’’Tahitian Paradise . The Seniors had a lot of fun at their class party, The In Crowd Goes Out , but when it came time to leave the Seniors were a little sorrowful because they knew that this was the last class party they would attend. The underclassmen looked forward to their class party next year while the Seniors had only memories. The freshmen could have danced the night away at their first class party. Spotlighting Class Parties One couple really enjoyed one of many dances at the Junior Class Party. Juniors-Seniors Held Class Parties Senior students take time out from Class Party to pose for picture. Chemistry student finds an accurate measurement of a common solution. Aleric Brown proves to be an excellent drum major. School Life Offered Between class periods students relax on campus. Students hurry to their classes before the tardy bell rings. 14 Jane Atklsson finds the nurses' help rewarding In the time of need. Halls prove to be crowded between classes. 15 With only 55 minutes alloted for each class period, students had no time to spare. These minutes were filled to capacity with such varied subjects as English, French, Psychology, Algebra, Sewing, Woodshop, and Health Safety. Classroom time was well put to use, for students had to work quickly and quietly to accomplish all that had to be done in each short period. Students who have studied a foreign language have dis- covered that basic English skills must be mastered before a foreign language can be completely understood. In the space age today, a great amount of emphasis is placed on the study of science and mathematics. Whether or not students intend to become scientists or mathemati- cians, Tolleston School's administration feels that each student should have some background in these fields. To give students the opportunity to be well versed in these fields Tolleston School's Curriculum contains several courses in math and science. Courses offered in the Social Sciences include World History, World Geography, Psychology, Government and Economics. Each of these courses stressed citizenship to the students. Tolleston offers a complete 4 year program in business. Among the courses offered are Bookkeeping, General Bus- iness, Typing I and II, and Clerical Practice. These courses attempted to preDare our students for future careers in the business field. Students of T.H.S. were able to exhibit their creative ability in many various vocational courses. Through the instructions given by diligent teachers In these educational areas, students were able to learn how to cook, sew, give first aid, care for children, make articles of wood and metal. Tolleston students are required to pass courses in Health Safety before they receive a diploma. The school administration feels that students cannot enjoy life unless they are good in health; therefore, these courses will give the students a background on how to live a healthy life. Physical fitness was strongly stressed by Tolleston School. The physical education teachers stressed courage, strength, and above all sportsmanship. Under the guidance of teachers, students realized that in any sport it doesn't count who wins the game as much as how the game was played! Spotlight On Academic1 Senior students display talent in drama during their English classes. English and History Mrs. Bush points out the case history of a paragraph to her English students. Through the study of English and History students have learned the funda- mental knowledge of English grammar. Also they studied literature which included the reading and understanding of novels, and short stories. In order to understand their reading better students displayed their talent in drama by acting out plays during English hours. History also played an important part this school year. Senior students studied the working of the U.S. Government, while U.S. History students studied the complete history of their country and the problems faced by them. World History students studied problems and history of foreign lands. 18 U.S. History students listen carefully to lectures given by Mr. Steele. Mr. Marshall assists students in government class. Play Opposite Role Dr. Crane explains the funda- mentals of Psychology. Students display current events in U.S. History. Business and Manual Arts This student Is seeking additional advice on typing lesson. Being the only male enrolled In Typing n re- quires absolute concentration. Tolleston School offers a com- plete four-year program in business. Among the courses offered are Book- keeping, General Business, Typing I, and Shorthand I and II, and Clerical Practice. In these courses the students learned that accuracy and neatness were requirements for success in the business field. Advanced students worked untiringly to prepare them- selves for secretarial work. Many business students signed up with the co-operative program which enabled students to go to school half day and to work the rest of the day in their chosen fields. In Manual Arts students learned how to use their hands constructive- ly. Planning, designing and building such items as knick-knack bars, book cases, tables and stools devel- oped skills which students will surely find valuable in the future. These typing students strive to increase number of words per minute and decrease errors. 20 Played Opposite Roles. Woodshop students work Industriously on their projects. Mr. Smith explains the fun- damentals of mechanical drawing to one of his stu- dents. Science Classes Mrs. Henderson goes over Chemistry Exams with two of her students. Advanced Science students show an appreciation for preciseness and accuracy. Mr. Duncan's science students question him on various sub- jects. Chemistry students wash hands to obtain accurate results from experiments. Miss Carnage explains the fundamentals of Geometry to her students. Develop Challenges Orchestra students practiced regularly In preparation for their Gala Concert. The Sounds of Music The string section worked many long hours to acquire perfection. The brass section rehearses diligently on a new song. 24 Studonts looked on while Mr. Llndaas prepares to show another movie. The World in a Song. The Girls' Glee Club has com- pleted another full year of activities. Under the direction of Mr. Lindaas, the members have a Christmas Con- cert for the P.T.A., an annual spring concert, participated in the Gary Music Festival, and Baccalaureate, and Commencement Exercises. A- long with the A Cappella Choir, they gave a dance to raise money for the club. Developing musical skills brought much attention from Glee Club members. Latin II students take turns reading passages from Julius Caeser. Students Improve Skills The language laboratory plays an Important part In learning Spanish. Art students demonstrated their skills In mask-making. Art students admire the work of fellow students. Both Artistic and Linguistic Students display talent in chalk drawings. In Art I the major areas of study this year were development of design, sense, individual skills, and understanding and development of practical, vocational, and aesthetic experiences. Also a command of tools, equipment, and techniques, care, and use of materials were mastered. Art n students gained a broader knowledge In the use of materials, techniques, and skills. In this course the students developed an under- standing of design and ability to choose well designed articles for personal use. Individual projects promoted within each student the sense of creativity. They revealed such things as the correct techniques of contact printing, the developmental process, and the different textures of familiar objects. The students also learned what is considered good photography through composition and techniques. Creativity also occured in classical languages. Latin courses studied various areas. Latin I students learned the fundamentals of Latin grammar. Latin II students participated in such class activities as translating excerpts from Julius Caesar. Latin III students studied the famous Romans Pompey and Cicero. 27 Emphasis Was Placed On Health Mrs. Johnson's Health Safety Class had Interesting and healthful discussions. Mr. Brown's dally exercise Is carrying film projectors. Through the instruc- tions given by our diligent teachers in the Homemak- ing Areas, students were able to learn to cook, sew, give first aid, and to care for children. These courses also helped stu- dents to prepare for future positions in life while earning credits. The goal of several of these stu- dents was to learn to be- come a better homemaker for the coming years. Making a woarable garment wasn't such a tedious Job for this student. Future Homemakers of America Sewing garments requires skilled In- struction such as Miss Taylor gives her students. Tolleston High School has as its chief ad- ministrators Mr. Richard M. Carrabine, Principal; Mr. William P. Swan, Assistant Principal; Mr. W. Roger Snead, Assistant Principal. They are the men whose leader- ship and guidance have enabled this school to be a more worthwhile institution of learning. Each of their positions has subjected Tolleston Students to justified punishment, gratifying congratulations, and the force of leadership necessary for maintaining and building educational skills. They are noted and praised highly for their work at Tolleston. They have given students ideal standards for which they are to strive. Their administra- tion and dedication to the student body have enabled each student’s life to be more pleas- ant. They are also known as men of under- standing and sincerity. Because of their ad- ministration for and dedication to the student body they help students with social and aca- demic problems. They have worked willingly and endlessly with the faculty to improve school facilities, and make our school a bet- ter place to attend. Each of these gentlemen has served as a capable, understanding and very considerate principal of Tolleston School. Through their outstanding ability our school has become one of the most respected and highly rated schools in the city. Spotlight On ministration Administrators The School Board members are ap- pointed by the mayor for a term of four years. The members remaining from last year are Dr. Wygant and Mr. White. The Indiana School Board Association believes that the Gary Board of Education has the sole responsibility to govern the public schools. This authority and respon- sibility is granted by law and cannot be delegated by others. The Board makes and sets school policies and the superintendent’s duty is to implement them. The board also hires and fires teachers and administrators, and looks out for the welfare of the students. The Superintendent is the hired chief ad- ministrative official of the Board of Ed- ucation. Dr. Lee R. Gilbert, superintendent of schools, efficiently administered the Gary School System. The 1966 Gary Board of School Trustees are: (standing 1-r) Mr. Donald Belec, secretary; Mr. LeRoy Mitchell, treasurer; (Seated l-r)Mr. Andrew White; Dr. James Wygant, president; and Dr. Montague 32 Oliver, vice-president. and Principals Displayed Leadership Richard M. We may be thinking of a t eacher who helped us understand something we had never understood before. But all our thoughts will focus the spotlight on past events in high school. As Freshman, we joined many clubs and looked eagerly toward being a part of Tolleston High School. We were led that year by Beverly Wilson, Harold Cox, and Sharon Reed. We also attended our class party”April Showers.” As Sophomores, we chose our class rings and saw Issac Hood, Rowan Smith, and Eddie Harris dunk those basketballs that helped us win the regionals. Our class party, ”Our Day Will Come,” was planned by our class offi- cers. Dorothy Preston, Donna Foster, Rita Fields, and Sandra Ervin. As Juniors, Beverly Wilson, Dorothy Preston, Sharon Burge, and Nona Fitts plan- ned our Prom, ’’Moonlit Garden.” as well as our class party, On Broadway.” As the year drew to an end, our candidates for Girl's State and Boy's State were chosen. As Seniors, we were led by Donna Foster, Robert Ursery, Barbara Goodman, and Peggy Means. We happily attended our class party, ’’The In-Crowd Goes Out.” Dur- ing that year Joyce Ann Gregory was crowned Homecoming Queen and Issac Hood, Artis Carrol, and John LaBroi were named outstand- ing athletes. Now is the time for us to take our part in the world as mature adults. This has been our class history, and the spotlight slowly dims but these four years will be a living part of us for many years to come. Every year there's always the rush of organizing clubs, but this year students stayed after school to attend club meetings all through the year. Students enjoyed them- selves at the Hl-Y Sweetheart Dance, the Y-Teena Granny Dance. G.A.A. Hike, the sectionals and many more activities sponsored by our organisations. In the music department students enjoyed such extracurricular activities such ss their Christmas Concert. Dance, and their participation in Choral contests While they enjoyed singing, the Science Club enjoyed going on field trips and having lectures. The Hl-Y gave their annual show and attended several area churches for religious studying. The Y-Teens had several activities this yean the Mid- winter Conference. Girl's Talk. Granny Dance, Pajama Party. Turnabout and the Womanless Wedding. Student Council members worked diligently to collect newspapers for the S.O.S. Humanity Drive. The French and Spanish Clubs devoted their efforts to developing the Interests of their members on France and Spain. The I.at in Club looked forward to their annual Homan Banquet. The Future business leaders of America took pleasure In developing their skill while the future teachers of America visited several colleges and heard lectures on the teaching profession. The Art club worked happily on their masterpieces for the annual art contest. G.A.A. played with sportmanship In their new sports. While all our boys used continuous efforts to grt ahead and be the best in the sports world. Well, we've viewed all of our organizations and the spotlight slowly fades sway from the Organizations. The Pep Club is also an im- portant factor in the team’s suc- cess. Tolleston's school spirit was at its best and the team was one of the best In the city. This year the Tolleston High Drama Club began with new members, new club activities, and a new club sponsor-Mr. Allen Zwinklis, speech teacher. In order to become a member of the Drama Club, one had to work with the book fair. Newcomers to the club found that hard work and time had to be spent unloading books, keeping track of the numbers of books sold, and decorating the library for the fair. With the help of a former sponsor, Mrs. Dorothy Lawshe, guidance counselor, the book fair was again a success. Drama Club meetings, held every Friday, were made interesting by sessions impromptu speeches (two minutes of dissertations on interesting topics drawn from a box by the members), situation speeches, and sandwich forums (each member brought a dime and they bought cookies, potato chips, and pop-no sandwiches). Instead of the annual Highlights in Humor production, the Tolleston High Drama Club undertook a major production. Also, the Drama Club members went to see productions at Indiana University-Calumet Campus-and other theatres in the city. 84 A Drama Club member displays the Importance of speech gestures in dramatics. The Tolleston Student Council is the student government of the school. It is a medium through which the individual student expresses his opinions on matters concerning the student body at Tolleston. The Student Council was composed of the presidents of the four senior high school classes and two representatives elected at large from each class. It is through these representatives that the classes give their views and express their grievances to the council. The Council is mainly a service organization, performing many services for the school and community. The major project sponsored this year was a paper drive throughout the Tolleston community. Proceeds went to the S.O.S. drive. At the end of the year the members enjoyed a banquet. At this time, three outstanding Council members were chosen to represent Tolleston at a one week seminar at Indiana University. Student Council members worked many hours after school making plans for their paper drive. The Tolleston Hi-Y Harold Cox Secretary Anthony Naylor Business Manager The Tolleston Chapter of the National Hi-Y Fellowship of the Young Men's Christian As- sociation of the United States was begun on the Tolleston campus in March 1962 with 10 boys. Now its membership has grown to 30. The members of the club accept the National Purpose: To create, maintain and extend throughout the home, school, and community, high standards of Christian character. Among the annual activities of the club are: monthly visitation of a church in the community; selection of a club sweetheart; and presentation of the annual Talent Panorama. Selection is difficult but the young lady who receives the honor is indeed the envy of the campus. This year three beautiful girls were finalists. They were Arlene Miles, Sandra Erving. and Joyce Sykes. At the Annual Sweetheart Dance sponsored by the club. Miss Sandra Erving was recipient of the honor of being Hi-Y Sweetheart for 1965-66. The dance was held in the beautiful Imperial Ballroom of the Sheraton Inn. The Bal d’Hiver proved to be a very colorful affair. Other events of the club were the induction of thirty new members. Parents, friends, students, and prospective Latin students were invited to this affair. They also sponsored the Roman Banquet. The food was prepared as the Romans did centuries ago. All members wore usual Roman attire which consisted of a toga and sandals. Other events included national Latin exams for all Latin I, II, III, students and the biggest events that everyone awaited was annual City- wide Conference in which all schools that teach Latin participate. During that spring and summer these students banded together to bring out the new Raider Review. It was rough going during the first year of 1964-65. Students worked during their study periods and after school. They raised funds by selling ice cream and chips during the summer session and brought out a paper regularly during the school year. In September of 1965 the staff was given a class period and school credits for publication work. The staff members selected Carmen Agosto as Editor-in- chief. ROTC - Future Military Honorary cadettes pose with officers and eighty-one members of ROTC. ROTC cadets represented Tolleston in city parades. The Reserve Officers Training Corps is a course taken by all boys who are interested in our nation's military policy. In this program the young cadet learns the use of military weapons, equipment, and tactics. The major advantage one has if he enrolls in ROTC is that should he decide to begin a career in the armed forces, he would be eligible for a quicker promotion. The cadet's goal is usually to obtain as many promotions as possible, for it is the high ranking cadets who receive recognition and privileges. An example of this would be the Honor Council of which only the high ranking students are members. This year the ROTC had as its directors Sgt. Herman Hill and Sgt. Chester Wise. The enrollment for 1965-66 was approximately two hundred thirty. Of this number, nine participated on the Rifle Team, and fifteen on the Drill Team. Other important members of the ROTC were the Honorary Cadettes. Two seniors, Ernestine McClatchey and Donna Foster and one junior, Charlotte Green, were chosen by popular vote of the ROTC as Honor- ary Cadettes. Our military unit took on new color with the inclusion of members of the opposite sex . The girls' Rifle and Drill teams gave our girls a chance to demonstrate their skills in sharp-shooting and squad discipline. The ROTC may take its place with other institutions of military training such as West- point, or Annapolis, it will help produce our future leaders and help to accelerate our prog- ress in military education. The drill team Is one of the main branches of ROTC. Inspection day had extra significance when Cpt. Garcia Inspected. Superior marksmanship was always the goal of the Rifle Team. Drill team members were responsible for the mainten ance of the flag. Here, cadets are busily preparing for a drilling exhibition. Theodore Moore Cheryl Holloway Layout Editor Copy Editor Noisy typewriters, reams of paper, pages of copy, ana hundreds of pictures - these were but a few of the ingredients that went into the completion of the 1966 PIONEER. Beginning in September, the flashbulbs began popping as the staff of the PIONEER attempted to catch the spirit of the year 1966. As the year progressed and the book began to take form, the various editors began looking for just the right picture or just the right word to fit in with the theme of the book. After meeting six deadlines, taking four hundred orders, sorting through a thousand pictures, and writing ten-thousand words of copy, the book was finished and sent to the publisher. Then came the anxious weeks of waiting for the book to arrive, to see the product of six months of work. When the book finally arrived, the staff once more set to work, balancing the accounts and scheduling the distribution dance. After it was all over, the staff enjoyed an honors banquet. The best reward, however, was the achievement of producing a school annual worthy of the Tolleston name. The editor-in-chief of the 1966 PIONEER was Mike Kelley. The assistant editor was a member of the junior class, Deborah Moore. Layout editor and copy editor were Theodore Moore and Cheryl Holloway respectively. Frank Zedalis kept the books. Every student has at one time or another felt the rich reward and satisfaction of being a member of some group organized for a definite purpose. Whether athletic or social, the group was instrumental in helping to build and strengthen character. Being a member of the football, basketball, tennis, track, cross country, wrestling, or baseball team taught the importance of developing and exercising physical abilities to the utmost, not for personal gain or glory, but rather for the the good of the team. One of the leading linemen throughout the season, Artis Carrol, Tolleston’s star center and tackle, was one of the few Tolleston athletes to make the All-State football squad. Miss Joanne Minelli; and our pho- tographer. Mr. John Giolas, all of whom did much to aid the student journalists. We would also like to thank the administrators, the faculty, and the entire student body for their support and co-operation. Without their help the yearbook would not have been a success.
