TOLLESTON MICH SCHOOL Gary, Indiana REFLECTIONS OF ’65 This year's Pioneer is quite similar toa mirror which reflects images and actions. The achievements of Tolleston’s students, faculty, and athletic teams reflect the high standards of our school. This year's annual attempts to share with you some of the highlights and vibrant moments experienced by the Tolleston family this year. The Senior Class of 1965 is the epitome of Tolleston’s high standards--the real re- flector of the entire student body, school spirit, and faculty work. Whether the members of this class succeed or fail after leaving Tolleston will depend upon the knowl- edges gained and values obtained during the entire of their high school experience. The Sophomore and Junior Classes have begun to develop their potentialities, character, and personalities. They play an important role in the effective operation of our organizations and school spirit. Together with the Freshman Class, whose ability to readily adjust to the high school situation was remarkable, these classes show great promise for success of future Senior classes. The accent on excellence which the faculty and administratorsconstantlydemand of the s.udents reflects the high caliber of the Tolleston faculty. The administrators took a deep interest in the progress and behavior of the entire student Body. Faculty was always willing to meet any difficulties which arose for any student. Tolleston High School can be proud of the fine athletic teams which represent it. We may not be the victors in all of our endeavors, but at times we have been victorious over the best. We compete with the sense of fair play in our minds and a strong will to win. Whenever we win, joy reigns, but when we loose, we always keep in mind the saying, It matters not who won or lost, but how the game was played. Keeping this in mind, we are now pre- pared to embark on a journey to view the REFLECTIONS OF '65 2 TOLLESTON SCHOOL LIFE REFLECTED HAPPY MEMORIES. Finally, the big night arrived and four beautiful convertibles drove eight finalists around the field at half time. Then for the most thrilling moment of all, Fayetta Waddell was crowned Homecoming Queen 1964-65. A crown, a trophy, a bouquet, and a watch were her prizes while the runners-up re- ceived bouquets and bracelets bear- ing the inscription Homecoming Princess . U Jmmutioiuil i onDraro Sorirtp tor16i|Lh Srhool Journalists One of the most demanding tasks of the school year is the publication of the yearbook, the Pioneer. This year's staff was quite small compared to recent years. Never- theless, each member put in hours of careful work in order that deadlines could be met. Working on the Pioneer required a development of fresh and different ideas and the usual duties of a staff member. There was copy work, drawing layouts, identifying the student pictures, typing all of the copy work, selling advertisements to Tolleston area merchants and the selling of the yearbooks which required careful records. All of these various jobs were to be completed in order that deadlines could be met. As is plainly visible, it required a lot of diligent work to fully complete the yearbook. This year's Pioneer acquired added leadership. Mr. M.H. Lewis entered the yearbook corps as co-sponsor with Miss J. Minelli who has had the prime responsibility of sponsoring the yearbook for the past two years. Mr. Lewis took a deep interest in the yearbook and should be commended for his patience and avid interest in the school publication. The publication of the yearbook would not be complete without giving credit to Mr. Giolas and Alfred Miller for the time they spent in the photography department. 87 PUBLICATION OF PIONEER DEMANDED Pioneer staff discusses arrange- ment of layouts Indexing the yearbook was a full time job for these Pioneer members. MANY HOURS OF WORK Advertising was necessary to sell the yearbook. Posters, such as this one, were commonly displayed through the halls. HONOR SOCIETY-SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT! s£« LC rr,d C r°ly Ur 2 0 r) The Ernie Pyle chapter of the National Senior Honor Society of Tolleston High School has endured a great many hardships in order to sustain this year. This year began with a total of eleven seniors-four boys and seven girls. One of the major projects of the Honor Society was the selling of Tolleston beanies. The pro- ceeds from this sale will be used to help pay for the stoles which the members will wear during June bacca- laureate services. This project was successfully carried out due to the eagerness of students to obtain a beanie. Under the direction of Miss Wallace, the Honor Society showed its capabilities as a service group. On Career Night each member played very important roles in introducing various guest administrators, who were to speak on their respective colleges. The Honor Society adopted a re- vised constitution and higher quali- fications for new inductees. The incoming Juniors will have to meet these higher standards In order to receive the honor of being members in the National Senior Honor Society. •I 20rA?lety ™ember of ,hc Class of '65 included: (1 to r) Reginal ?• ”• uK..Ca na; Janl Alsobrooks; Carolyn Ursery, Vlce-Prcsldcn Linda Jo Mitchell. Sponsored by Mrs. Beshore, the staff of eager journalists found that working on a newspaper required much extra time. The staff members selected Fred Mitchell as Ldltor-ln-chief. Carmen Agosto.and Jackie Embry as Assistant Editors. Fred Moss as Sports Editor. Cheryl Holloway as Feature Editor and Treasurer, and Lucy Wyatt as Typing Editor. Many others also helped in the special articles and In the typing material for the newspaper. In order to raise money, the organization sold potato chips and ice-cream during the summer which proved to be very successful. Renewing the presence of a school newspaper created new opportunities for students to express their views at Tolleston School. The newspaper also served as an aid toward promoting school spirit. Inasmuch 3s this was the first year of the Raider Review , many of the school secretaries were called upon to add their knowledge in the putting out of the newspaper. This, however, is hoped to be alleviated by the creation of a special journalism class for people working on the newspaper next year. Also, with an experienced staff of journalists, it is hoped that the Raider Review will be even more successful. Cheryl Holloway hands out typing assignments for the Raider Review to Mike Kelley and Carmen Agosto. The Raider Review staff spent nights after school typing and organizing material for the newspaper. ART CLUB HAD A FULL SCHEDULE. (How 1) Kathy Naylor, Joanne Hall, Betty Warren. In prim- itive times, man created and developed musical expressions because he needed a means with which he might fulfill his lingering longings and de- sires. Through the study of music we gain additional understanding of peoples who have lived in various periods of our world's history, because the ex- pressions of those peo- f)les found in their art- stic creations are true indications of their ways of living and thinking. Appreciation, understanding and sensi- tivity to the beautiful things around us in our environment, in the home, church and religion, in nature itself, as well as oi attributes in other people and insight into our own human nature, can best be achieved through the arts. The arts, and especially the art of music, make us sensitive to emotional reaction. . .we learn to feel more deeply, all the things of life. Music teaches us to control and direct our emotional reaction patterns so that they become a constructive thing, and a creative thing. They assembled at 7:55 each morning and doubled-timed around the building for five minutes. During home study, each initiate carried picket signs which advertised objectives of Hi-Y. The final day of initiation week, the elated new members once again sported their high fashions for which Hi-Y mem- bers have become known. Girls join in celebration of end of initiation. 118 New members pose with Vice-President. Bernard lianyard, in high fashions. CANDLELIGHT INDUCTION CEREMONY Rev. Going into the final Homecoming game, Tollcston was 4-4 In overall play and was tied for fourth in the conference. However, the 59ers proved too much for us. and we ended the season on a sour note with a 20-7 defeat. The team did feature some outstanding individual per- formers, but they were unable to muster enough individual performers to salvage a winning season.
