Tolleston High School Gary, Indiana 1964 PIONEER The Pioneers of the New Frontier dedicate... President John Fitzgerald Kennedy May 29, 1917 - November 22, 1963 And so. my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country 2 (Inaugural Address 1961) Our 1964 yearbook is published in memory of the 35th President of the United States. John Fitzgerald Kennedy The End Came Too Soon Although the deoth of our beloved President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, was a cruel, shocking blow to the notion, the student body at Tolleston courageously performed to their utmost ability; ond carried through toward the goals of the New Frontier. Terminating years of hard work, trying situations, ond new experiences, the students of Tolleston High School will remember these times because of the lasting effect they will hove on each of their lives. As we look back on our lives we shall realize how each year ond each new experience serves as a stepping stone to maturity and higher learning. Arriving to school any time between 7:20 ond 11:20 presented a disgusting problem to both students and teachers. Students, however, under the guidance of our principals, Mr. Carrabine and Mr. Swan, coped with this problem ond changed punctuality from a mutual problem to a solution for academic success. The past year was not entirely spent academically. Occasionally social events intervened with the academic functions of Tolleston students. Games, class parties, inductions, ond many other after school activities helped to make the year more pleasant. Now that onother year toward development and maturity at Tolleston High School has elapsed, the future is governed by the hands of fate. We shall leave behind at Tolleston High School another year of wonderful experiences. Someday while reminiscing about high school days, we shall recall this year as one of our most treasured years, and realize with envy that it is Gone With Time. Sadness and gladness, tears and smiles, will be expressed in memories of the past school year. These events will hold fast in our minds, but we will soon realize that they are all Gone With Time. 4 Administrators Worked To M . At the beginning of the year the stoff chose the editors for the various positions to be held for the year. To hood the group they chose Laurence Anderson for Editor-in-Chief; Maxine Kapsch os his assistant. Vibfking with them were Gregory Noncy Douglas, Business Monoger; Carolyn Ursery, Assistant Business Monoger; Shirley Willioms, Copy Editor; Lynn Lowery, Assisfont Copy Editor; Eugene Greer, Layout Editor; Anita Flournoy, Assistant Layout Editor; Wolter Lowe, Index Editor; Doris Sheridan, Assistant Index Editor; Horace Rogers, ond Fred Mitchell, Sports Editors. There was much time spent ond effort put forth by these students in getting this yeorS book completed by the deodline, which seems to come much too soon for the work that has to be done. Along with white spoce, pictures ond copy ore the bosic elements in the design of the yearbook. Although it is a tedious job to arrange the pictures, copy writing is most defiont. In writing copy, there are heodings, captions, and body copy; eoch of which presents o difficult fosk. By means of body copy, readers become acquainted with the ideals, purposes, and activities of vorious extracurricular clubs ond organizations existing in the school. Captions under pictures exploin the oction of the picture ond mdte various identifications. They must alio be well written. RAIDER'S FOOTBALL COACHES ARE LEFT TO RIGHT: Kesely, Steomes, and Smith. The Tolleston grid story of 1963 featured only a tie in eight contests. Our team's futile bid to solvoge a victory was muffled by a score of injuries, costly mistokes, and o well known disease colled fumble-itis. Materially Tolleston fashioned a notorious ground attack, which was highlighted by our fullback Claude All Purpose Vaxter. He was complemented by o set of speedy holfbock including Tommy Nichols, Johnny La Broi, David Mitchell and Ronald Wilson. Our passing gome which suffered from key injuries to our receivers showed much promise. The three alternating quarterbacks Billy Taylor, Isaac Hood, and Gordon Fleming olso combined their posting ond signal-colling talents to keep the defense always aware of their threat. There was glaring evidence of the team's obility as they bowed to their first three opponents by a total of a mere five points. These close games were contributed by o well fortified defensive platoon. Heoding the list of these unsung heroes were Ivory Hood, Jerry Wick, Artis Coroll, and John Zedolis. This rugged defensive unit was responsible far many of the close games that could hove gone either woy. Probobly more important than the feom's final record, however, os the fact that the 1963 squad was fost, aggressive, ond potentially the best teom Tolleston hos ever seen. 120 Lose Seven on Gridiron Varsity Football Scores Tolleston Opponents Football O Romo 7 7 Michigan City 7 9 Roosevelt 11 13 Emerson 12 13 Horace Mann 0 0 E. Cooch Joe Vonce ond his diamond aggregation assumed a positive attitude toward the 1964 boseboll season, leaving behind the thoughts of their dismal past. The return of six veteran players to the '64 roster made it easy for Coach Vance to assume this attitude and encouraged the ball players to play more enthusiastically. These returning lettermen were: Ronald Patton, Robert Protho, Anthony Protho, Larry Anderson, Tom Lewis, and William Carter. While acquiring a correct mental attitude, the players also kept in top physical condition. This physical conditioning consisted of early spring practices and organized exercise sessions in the gymnasium. Acknowledgements Although the entire Pioneer Staff worked diligently during the year to moke the yearbook o success, special thonks should be extended to our advisor. Miss Joanne Minelli, and our photographer, Mr. John Giolos, both of whom did much to aid the student journalists. We would also like to thank the administration, the faculty, and the entire student body for their support and co-operation. Without their help the yearbook would not hove been a success.
