Since homecoming is the highlight of football season, it doesn't take long for the enthusiasm to spread throughout the whole school. A pep session began this year's homecoming weekend. This was followed by a hectic rush to gather wood and boxes for the bonfire Thursday evening. The students gathered on the baseball field, to watch the blazing fire and cheer the team on to victory. The homecoming game was played against Valparaiso on Friday, October 16. ,Though we were losing, the crowd remained in high spirits through- out the game. lust as homecoming is the highlight of football season, the crowning of the homecoming queen is the highlight of the homecoming ceremonies. A new method was used in selecting this year's queen - the candidates had to sell tickets. The girl who sold the largest number of tickets was chosen to reign over the festivities. After a beautiful half-time exibition by the band and the majorettes, Carole Sebben, the top salesgirl, was crownedi queen. Sharon Williams, Hanna Guip, Grace Engel, and Sarah O'Neal made up her court. The girls were driven around the field in convertibles as the band played Let Me Call You Sweetheart. Shirley Johanson, one of the majorettes, followed with a fiery baton-twirling act. The annual home- coming dance was held after the game as a perfect ending to a hectic weekend. Our first touchdown touches off the spirit of the crowd. The bonfire burns brightly the night before the game. Seniors Wltemember When Seniors recall memories of the years gone by at their last class party. Since this was their last class party, the seniors tried to make it one that they would always remem- ber. The theme ot the party, Remember When, was carried out by decorations which commemorated the class parties of the years gone by. As they walked into the gym, the seniors first saw a giant swing, surrounded by multi-colored flowers, and they remembered their first class party, Swing into Spring. A wishing well, castles, and a glittering star hanging from the ceiling brought back happy memories of When You Wish Upon a Star, while -an Eiffel Tower, recalled An Evening in Paris, the junior prom. Reluctantly, the seniors tumed towards the last wall, where they saw graduation caps and diplomas. All their wonderful memories became part of the past again, and the Class of Sixty began to look ahead to a bright future. Most high school students, at one time or another, seem to be floating around on a pink cloud. This was especially true for the Tolleston Iuniors on the date of their class party. A ceiling of two huge pink clouds, made of crepe paper and angel hair, and a glittering 61, held up by two blackbirds, carried out the theme, On Cloud 6l. Thinking of the day when they will proudly be able to wear their class rings, the school spirited sophomores chose Sunburst in Spring' as a theme for their class party. They danced the evening away beneath a web of blue and white crepe paper. Numerous Tolly school emblems and large 62's decorated the gym walls and hung from the ceiling, further reminding them of the day when they will be upperclassmen. At Their Last Class Party Iuniors are dancing under pink clouds. The American Legion and its auxiliary sponsored five girls and three boys to attend Boys' and Girls' States. These students, chosen mainly for schol- arship and character, learned how our government operates by running for various offices and then carrying out their respective duties. The D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award was presented by the Daughters of the American Revolution to an outstanding senior girl. She was selected for her citizenship qualities. Tolleston's Ernie Pyle Chapter began in the spring of 1959, with Miss Anna Marsh as its sponsor. This year, the Honor Society started their activities under the guidance of Miss Edith Wallace, their new sponsor. They acted as hosts during National Education Week and participated in the selection of an American citizen to the Hall of Fame for Great Americans. The year's activities drew to a close with the induction of new members, who were chosen ior scholarship, service, charac- ter, and leadership. The magic words, C1ass of 1960, you are now graduated, close a very important door in our lives, but they also open the doors of the future. Behind these doors lie many respon- sibilities, disappointments, and rewards, which will have to be taken into stride. The Class of Sixty has set its goals high, and it will live up to them. In Foreign Language Study German students gather around the piano to sing O Tannenbaumf' Language is the basis of all human rela- tionships: therefore, we must learn to use it correctly, The ability to speak and to write well is essential for success in many fields. A study of the works of great writers is one of the best ways to learn to write well. It en- ables students to express their thoughts clearly and, at the same time, appreciate the beauty of their own language. The study of foreign languages also helps us to better understand our own languages. This year, German, taught by Miss Marsh, was added to the curriculum. By studying this new language, along with Latin and Spanish, Tolleston students can gain a better under- standing of other lands and their cultures. Spanish students, too, enjoy singing songs in class. Mr. Elliott points out the seven hills of ancient Rome to his Latin stu- dents. Histor Broadens Horizons LY Through the study of History we learn about everything that has hap- pened in the past. World History makes students aware of the problems in foreign lands, while U. S. History provides us with the growth of our own nation. Seniors take a semester of both U. S. Government and Economics. In this way, they learn to take an active part in politics, and also to live in an economic world in a sensible way. Randy points out the course of a bill to a U. S. Govemment class. U. S. Senior Class History As we leave Tolleston, we look forward to a new and exciting part of our lives. Th-e past four years, however, will always remain in our memories. Mickey Chestovich, Bill Dulla, Mary Wallace, and Bob Ioros led us through our freshman year-the year that opened the door to many new activities. Among the most exciting were our two class parties, along with school clubs and freshman athletics. Sharon Padol, Iohn Lamfalusi. Iulia Phillips, and Iackie Bims were our sophomore class officers. We were proud to have Shirley Iohanson and Virginia McCullom as majorettes with the band, and equally proud of some of our boys who were playing varsity sports. This year's spotlight was shared by the choosing of our class rings and our beautiful class party- When You Wish Upon a Star. Along with our junior year came the prom- An Evening in Paris which we will always remember. Ken Badylak, Dan Wick, Myra Someson, and Ronald Ross led us in the grand march through the Eiffel Tower. As the year drew to a close, the eight candidates for Girls' and Boys' States were chosen. We were very happy for our candidates-Hanna Guip, Donna Daronatsy, Shirley Iohanson, Delphine Konopacki, Ierri Powell, Mickey Chestovich, Dan Wick, and Iohn Lamfalusi. Seniors at last ! With the help of our class officers-Al Knezevich, Donna Daronatsy, Shirl-ey Iohanson, and Walter Czarnecki-we tried to make our last year one we would always remember. Carole Sebben was crowned homecoming queen, and Grace Engel, Sharon Williams, Hanna Guip, and Sarah O'Neal made up the court. The seniors really stepped into the spotlight this year. Sharon Padol was crowned Football-O- Rama queen. Clubs and their activities involve many hours of staying after school and hard work on various projects. At the beginning of the year, the organizations were far from organized. As the affairs were straightened out, Student Council and Concert Band prepared for Homecoming festivities. Then Spatin Club went into full swing as they began making decorations and other preparations for their annual Starlight Fantasy. The Art Club was always ready to help with ideas for themes and decorations. The new look of Tolleston affected the activities of Science Club and Drama Club. The gym offered members of Drama Club the opportunity to display their talents, while the new science rooms and equipment enabled the Science Club to work with improved scientific methods. For most club members there seemed to be too many activities and excitement squeezed into too little time. They soon became famili- ar faces around the school since all activity and club pictures were taken by them. These pictures were then developed in our new school darkroom, enabling the staff to receive them faster. Tolly Times Staff Tolly Times Staff discusses articles in paper to eliminate future errors. The members of the Tolly Times staff were ever alert to report to the students, faculty, and community news that would be ofinterest. The first assignments were those of the reporters who gathered information from the various buildings, wrote it up, and turned in completed stories. Next the above items were proofread and typed on dummy. Stencils were typed and mimeographing process followed. The entire staff cooperated in producing a neat attractive Tolly Times for your reading. At last they became full-fledged members. A Latin theme was used for this year's Spatin Club's initiation. The new members, attired in Roman costumes, were paraded through the streets of Tolleston. Drama lub Every Tuesday evening Room 102 was full of excitement. This was gener- ally caused by the members of the Drama Club who were busy auditioning or rehearsing for a new skit or play. When the auditions were over, the members were given copies of their parts to learn. After they learned them, the first rehearsal was called, and they acted them out, improving with time. When the play was well along, the final dress rehearsal was planned. The members then polished the rough spots in their roles and were ready for the performance. This was the big day: those weeks of work finally paid off. Aside from the actual presentation of the plays, the Drama Club had other things of importance to complete. The new constitution was drawn up and written, and dues were collected. ,X ' Drama Club members, from left to right, are: BOTTOM HOW: Bemadine Iohnson, Sharon Fuller, Linda Clark, Ioan Kisyljq, Lucille Nadolski, Gloria Nunley, lane Buzanowski, and Margaret Intrieri. Meetings me The Carl Frazen Chapter of the Future Teachers of America was under the sponsor- ship this year of Mr. Lynn Lowe, our new guidance counselor. Throughout the year junior and senior members were given the opportunity to re- ceive valuable experience in the field of teaching. The girls substituted for the high school and grade school teachers while they attended meetings or when they arrived late due to bad weather. At the regular meetings guest teachers were invited to speak to the members about their different fields of teaching. This gave the members an idea of which fi-eld they would like to enter. Our new gym, which seats 1,400 cheering fans, has greatly helped Tolleston's school spirit and has given the team the moral support necessary to win. The convenient facilities for practicing enabled our basketball team to distinguish itself again this year with many wins and a second place in the West N. I. H. S. C. Fighting all the way but not having much luck, our football team played enthusiastically. Although they didn't win all the games, the good sportsmanship displayed will long be re- membered. Our baseball team furnished all opponents with tough competition. Working as a group they presented us with im- pressive scores. Tolleston also excelled in two newly-formed teams, tennis and wrestling, this past year. The city champ, Ken Badylak, and our other excellent players gave their opponents a difficult time in tennis competition. The Wrestling Team brought 'addi- tional honors to Tolleston by being the only team in Gary that was undefeated during the regular season. Track and X-Country, under new coaching, upheld its good name in all events--running, jumping, and hurdling. In whatever sport we enter, Tolleston is known for fair play and good sportsmanship. We are proud of our teams and happy to say they represent our school. SPO - i s wpx O kv Tx i ' X ,ak , uf- K L -, My , .- 4 i ,, .5 - ,. Led by Torn Petey Patton and Clyde Cook, co- captains, the Blue Raiders enjoyed another prosper- ous basketball season. Winning fifteen of twenty-one games during the regular season, Tolleston was at one time ranked ninth in the state. The Raiders had a chance to win their first share in a conference championship, but it virtually went up in smoke when they lost to Hammond Tech. leaving the field wide open for East Chicago Washington Much of this year's success can be accounted to To11eston's new gymnasium. Both the reserve and the varsity squads had additional time to practice, thus improving their playing. Tolleston took part in two tournaments this sea- son, the traditional Holiday Tourney and the Elkhart Tourney. During the Holiday Tourney the Raiders easily won the first two games against Horace Mann and Froebel, but the play-off game against Roosevelt resulted in a loss for Tolleston. In the Elkhart Tourney, we won against Fort Wayne S. S., however, a margin of two points caused us to lose the second game against Elkhart. Graduation will hit the Raiders hard this year, since they will lose four of the five starters. Sidney Gunn, Royal Wyatt, Clyde Cook, and Tom Patton are the players Tolleston wlil miss most next year. In spire of this loss, Coach Ioe Vance is looking ahead to a bright future for next year's team. The Tolleston cheerleaders, consisting of one senior and seven juniors, began the football season with a Football-O-Bama dance. As the season progressed, the cheerleaders raised money by selling Tolleston buttons and pen- nants with the help of Mr. Keseley. As the foot- ball season drew to a close, the varsity pre- pared for the selection of new reserve cheer- leader squad. Attending a cheerleader convention was the most exciting event of the year. Following a basketball game, the cheerleaders piled all their belongings into their sponsor's, Miss Walters, car and headed toward Bowling Green, Ohio. While attending the convention and pep rally, they learned many original and unique cheers and yells. With the close of basketball season, the cheerleaders concentrated on the replacement of the senior member of the varsity squad. if JUZW2yg1.,r,.tg.g7r.,.E,.,.T.,i,,.7,,,?,s.?.il.7.rJ....3,,' V' .ir.Zs,.S,r,,.5.'sf.,.,,..7.r.., ,... g,,9,,.?,.1.,.s5...Jlim.:WZ. .,..
