THE PIONEER TOLLESTON HIGH SCHOOL Gary, Indiana 1954 INTRODUCTION The blare of trumpets, the clash of cym- bals, and the beating of drums signifies the arrival of the parade led by the Tolleston High School Marching Band. Approaching the reviewing stand are the distinguished members of the Administration on floats of elaborate design and pageantry. The Freshman Float calls to our attention an awkward Freshman stumbling through the corridors. As we gaze a little further down the par- ade of events we see the Sophomores coming into view. This shows a group of Sophomores laughing, dancing and having fun at a gala affair. The representation of the Junior class reminds us of our first Junior-Senior Prom. And last but most impressive is the Senior Float, we visualize the tense moment when the final step is taken and the diploma is received. ROW ONE: M. ClementĀ . F. Schuman. M Lamlalusi. ROW TWO. W. The first organizational meeting of the Alumni Association was held in August, 1953, at Tolleston High School. Don Langbehn acted as chairman until the group met in early September. At the meeting Ed Baran was selected as temporary chairman; Don Langbehn. Vice-President; Paul Guist, Treasurer; and Mrs. Vir- ginia Such, Secretary. The purpose of the Alumni Association is to exchange interest and fellowship among the alumni and to promote the welfare of Tolleston High School. 4 omeconnng Our Queen Hoi lime in Tolleston tonight Music filled the airā€ The first major activity of the Association was the Homecoming. The festivities began on Thursday. October 1. 1953, with a parade. It was ā€œhotā€ in Tolleston that night because of the tremendous bonfire in the center of the baseball field. Almost everyone in Tolleston was there to see the great flames lap up the pile of wood with its fiery tongue like a huge, hungry dog. The highlight of the bonfire was when a Horace Mann football player was tossed into the flames by the cheerleaders and football players of Tolleston. while the crowd laughed, sang, and showed no mercy. A ''tea social for the Alumni was held in the school cafeteria prior to the game on October 2. 1953. After the game and concluding the festivities a dance was given by the Alumni Association at the Sportsmen Recreation Center. 5 School JL 6 Find anything? Exploring our minds, and turning back the pages of our lives, we recall the many exciting football games. Each autumn high school stu- dents are rewarded with this thrill-packed grid- iron sport. Of course, occupying our time all year round were the difficult and tedious studies. In the spring the lawn seemed to be more frequent- ly used for studying than our school library. Where is the game??' Time out from our academic subjects were sometimes spent in the gym. During the many leisure hours spent here our future stars were developed. Socially, we were offered the many varied school dances. These get-togethers ranged from semi formals to more casual blue-jean affairs. All year round troubles with our cars were taken to the so called, school mechanic. These events, joyous and sorrowful, were put together to make up our most cherished years .... our school life. In September. 1949, the Homeroom Activity hour was introduced at Tolleston School by Principal James W. Standley. The Homeroom Guidance program has resulted in many a transformed Cindorolla. T. A. during the school year of 1953-54. Each department was discussed, and informed about the various projects that they are working on. Working co-operatively on these projects the P. T. A. and the school, became a unified body with one common goal, the improvement of Tolleston School. Other plans sponsored by the P. T. A. were the orientation program, workshops, and teacher participation in P. T. A. meeting. Under the auspicious of the president, Mrs. Alvin Wanthal, the P. T. Starting with a victory over Gary Edison, Tolleston came out of their dressing room, eager and hungry, eyeing the dangerous Roosevelt Panthers taking their warm-up shots down-court. Playing with brilliant flashes of lightning, scoring time and time again to the thunder of the audience, Tolleston emerged forth the victor, scoring the winning basket with a mere twelve seconds remaining on the scoreboard. The finale, ending a perfect Holiday Tournament, resulted in Tolleston gaining revenge over a great Froebel team which had beaten Tolleston earlier in the season by a score of 44 to 42. The final score read, Tolleston 58, Froebel 44. Congratulations, Tolleston. Well done! 142 West n a m. s. e. e , lampions Three cheers for the Tolleston Raiders who captured the 1953 West N.I.H.S.C. Baseball Championship with an impressive record of sixteen victories and only four defeats. Tolleston defeated Hammond High for the championship at Tolleston field in an extra-inning thrilling melodramatic final. The final score read, Tolleston 2; Hammond 1.
