THE PIONEER TOLLESTON HIGH SCHOOL GARY, INDIANA 1953 I i As the giant doors of the Toll- eston T. V. station swing open, we are able to view the telecasting of a great and important program. Entering Studio A, we see mem- bers of the administration busily writing scripts for this presenta- tion. Continuing down the wide corri- dors, we corre to studio B, where strangely enough, we see ourselves, the students of Tolleston High School, as the actors in this truly great program. I As we approach the set, where the scenes are to be enacted, we see the head director, Mr. J. W. Standley, in the control room, ready to give the signal for the show to begin. Then as the flood lights are turned on, we settle back in our seats to watch the colorful panor- ama of scenes that make up our daily life at Tolleston. L_l T 1 I COMMUNITY LIFE This is Tolleston, with its many wonderful places, which tend to serve as the pilot light to our community. Every year at Christmas time, we go to tenth and Roosevelt to gaze upon the tree of hope and friendship. Raiders Grill and Hi-Belles serve the pause that refreshes. National Tea is our Saturday shopping spot, but more enticing than that is the bakery with its rich, appetizing cakes and pastries. COMMUNITY LIFE The Library1 is the educational center of Tolleston, where the teachers, students, and residents of the community spend much of their time. The newly erected cleaners give an added luster to our community with their colorful building, and last but not least, is our favor- ite Dime Store, Ben Franklin. Yes, this is our community, and those of us who live here have a right to be proud, for you see, we live in Tolleston. SCHOOL LIFE Crew-cut” V Several scenes being shot for the gigantic television program, are those in which some Tolleston actors are taking part. Here are some of the sneak previews caught by our photographer. Peeking through a keyhole to one of the dressing rooms, we see an experiment in bar- bering. Passing through the halls we find another member of the cast taking time out for relax- ation and a little friendliness on the side. Of course, we musn’t forget to mention the title of the program, so if you’ll notice we’ve 6 Trimmers??” SCHOOL LIFE Come on boys give me a boost. snapped a picture of it with people entering the door to catch the first premiere. Once inside, they see the back-stage help preparing some of the decorations for the next scene. Some of the action shots are those of the teachers playing the varsity, and of the stu- I dent body supporting a pep meeting. We see a few members of the R. O. T. C. taking part in the raising of the flag. Something new has been added. The senior leading lady, seems to be giving a lesson in education to her pet, Cloie. T-O-L-L-E-S-T-O-N - Tolleston.” 7 GUIDANCE The following is a definition of guidance: The act which enables each individual to under- stand his abilities and interests, to develop them as far as possible, to relate them to life goals, and finally to reach a state of complete and ma- ture self-guidanqe as a desirable citizen of a democratic and social order.” For the last four years Tolleston has been conducting what is known as the Home Room Ac- tivity Hour. Once a week this hour is reserved for the subject of guidance. Every Monday, at 2:30, Freshmen and Sophomores remain in their home rooms to discuss such problems as, dating, etiquette, and getting along with others. Wed- nesdays are used by the juniors and Seniors for the same purpose. Their discussions are based mainly on what they plan to do after graduating. Movies and special talks sometimes aid in these discussions. 8 HOME ROOM ACTIVITIES Those finger? Tomen everywhere! Modern Music Makers You tell'em, Doris. Under the homeroom program offered here, the students are compelled to stay in homeroom at least two days. One day is set aside for guid- ance; and the other, for study. The remaining days are free for any activities that the students wish to attend. For the students who are interested in any form of radio or art, there is a Radio Club or Art Club. To those who want to extend their studies in sciences, a newly formed Biology Club and Science Club offer wide opportunities. The shops provide advantages to the students wanting to develop skills in the numerous crafts. These and many more clubs and activities are made available during the homeroom activity hour. Standiey - Principal Administration The Board of Education is responsi- ble for the direction of the public schools, setting up school policies, and the important job of obtaining funds for new school buildings. Tire newly elected officers of the school board are: Emery Badanish, Pres- ident; Arlie Premo, Vice President; Rev. J. Allen, Secretary; John Davies, Assis- tant Secretary; and Joseph Luckey, Trea- surer. • To further enforce the policies of the board, is the Superintendent of schools, Charles D. Lutz. His staff consists of Assistant Superintendent Dana Whitmer, and Ralph Muller. Mr. J. V. Standley and Assistant Prin- cipal, Henry Rowland, enforce the pol- icies of the School Board here at Toll- eston. Ralph Muller, Ass’t Supt. — Business Manager; Charles D. Lutz, Superintendent; Dr. Dana Whitmer, Ass’t Supt.; Howard A. Bell, Auditor. Board of Trustees: Joseph A. Luckey, Rev. J. Claude Allen, Emery Badanish, Arlie Premo, John W. Davis. 14 Secretarial Force Mrs. Gaski, one of the most important persons on the office staff, is a bonded and responsible clerk. Through her goes all the money that enters and leaves Tolleston School. Miss Kish, another important clerk on the office staff, is general secretary to Mr. Standley and is in complete charge of the Tolleston payroll records. The youngest member of the staff, Miss Field, is accountable for all student grade records. Connected with the grade school of- fice staff we have Miss Slys and Miss Christy who handle all requisitions, bookrental, and the most tedious job of all, locker distribution. Eyes and ear tests, vaccinations, and tending to the illness of students in school are the duties performed by Mrs. McCrosky, School nurse. This year a new innovation, tat typing, was added to the duties of Mrs. McCrosky. This program included the actual typing of one thousand students here in our school. Conferences and visits of absentee students was handled by Mrs. Magioudis, our welfare director. She furnishes all teachers with ready information on the reasons of student absence, and enfor- ces the laws of the school. V. set, we see many diversified pro- grams and the people that make these programs possible. Turning to one of the channels on our T. V. set we view the teachers of Tolleston School. No T. V. program can be sufficiently telecast without the aid of sponsors, and so it is inevitable that our school could not be run without the aid of our spon- sors, the teachers. Even though they are exhausted after the long day of tea- ching, they sponsor many clubs and ac- tivities, give up their free time to chap- erone dances, and still find time to help students individually. Truly a success- ful program could not be operated with- out the aid of these able sponsors. Of the eighty-five schools in this region, Toll- eston was one of four to receive the Gold Scroll. This is the highest award offered for fulfilling the program outlin- ed by the National Office of P. T. A. This year, the Room Mother Plan was followed and found to be very success- ful, Under this plan, a mother in each room is selected to serve as head room mother. She selects a committee of mothers to assist in the various projects of the P. T. A. Band Boosters Band Boosters, which was organized in 1932, has come a long way in its task of building a bigger and better band. Through their tedious efforts of rais- ing money by means of sponsoring cake walks, raffles, and magazine drives, the band has been able to purchase much needed equipment. This year the boosters launched an- other fund raising drive. Through these efforts the boosters have again shown their unfailing loyalty towards the band. At this particular time they will close the door to their high school days and will open another door to newer horizons. As graduation time draws near, many seniors will be looking back over the four years they spent in high school. They will remember the day they entered high school, eager and ready to explore the wonders of G. A. A., Social Club, and many of the other activities. Many will remember, with a smile, the excite- ment of their first prom, while others will be remembering the football and basketball games they have participated in, whether it was playing in a game or going to urge the players on. Still others will be thinking of the numerous hours they spent studying for examinations. As the band began playing the familiar march, Pomp and Circumstance, and the seniors march solemnly down the aisle, all will be saying a fond farewell to the school that has housed their hopes, dreams, and fears of the past four high school years. 39 JUNIORS Gerald Aimutis Officers, left to right: R. Passing the gym, strains of music from the juke box float out into the night air. It is another Tues- day night and the Tolleston School Social Club is in full suing. Out of the thirty-five dances given by the num- erous clubs and organizations, twenty of these are sponsored by the Social Club. This organization is open to any student in high school, who wishes to pay the yearly dues of fifty cents. Part of this money is used for the purpose of purchasing records for the juke box. The remaining part of the money is divided into portions; one portion is used for keeping the juke box in repair; the other, is controlled by the Stu- dent Council who use this money to buy various articles to improve the looks of the school. After paying the dues, the student receives a member- ship card enabling him to enter any of the dances sponsored by the club. The Social Club is under the sponsorship of Mr. Goforth. It was organized for the sole purpose of build- ing social poise in the students of Tolleston. SPANISH CLUB Tf Sponsor: Mrs. Mary Jeffries. Officers: M. Yards, M. Lisek, E. Puzas, A. Hodorek, S.
