Dear Diary, I am always amazed at how quickly time flies ... it seems just yesterday when I began this diary ... now, as I glance back through the pages, I am thankful that I have this book of memo- ries . . . graduation will be here before I know it . . . practices at Memorial Hall . . . trying to keep my balance while doing the lock step . .. then commencement night will be here ... the long solemn march to the stage . .. the strains of Pomp and Circum- stance ... I’ll be so nervous I won't hear a word of the speeches . . . my name will be called, and I'll be shaking hands with Mr. Lutz and receiving congratulations from friends . . . smiles on the faces of most of the graduates . . . tears in the eyes of a few . . . afterward a whirl of open houses ... a hazy recollec- tion in my mind of my graduation night . . . envious juniors and wistful sophomores waiting for their turn. Yes, it is true . . . Time and tide wait for no man. Photography Keneson's Studio Gary, Indiana Publishers Kehoe Lau Chicago, Illinois September 1947 School days' School days! Those dear old golden rule days. Readin and writin- and ’rithmetic Taught to the tune of a hick'ry stick Yes, here I am again, and I'm singing that September song . . . as soon as I entered the building, I began to wonder what kind of year this would be ... things began to pop into my mind: what my program would be: what teachers I would have . . . how many classes I would have with him' . . . would I have to study much to keep my grades . . . what new clubs there would be to join . . . should I keep up all my other activities . . . would our football team take the city championship . . . how about basketbg l sectionals . . . graduation seemed too far away . . standing around their register classes I saw groups of bewil- dered freshmen, blase sophomores, enthusiastic juniors, un- certain seniors, talking and laughing while the walls begai d reacquaint themselves with the students' voices. Gosh! It s good1 to be back. It's wonderful to be back ! JAMES W. From left to right: Miss Kratkoczki, Mrs. Gaski, and Miss Bartkowski I wonder if they get tired . . . answering the same old questions . . . hour after hour . . . day after day . . . locker keys .. . game tickets . . . did you pay your book rental? . . . get your bus tickets after school . . . where were you third hour? . .. see Mrs. Gaski about that ... an endless flow of questions . . . what would we do without them? Tolieston isfortunate in having on its coaching staff Coach Eddie Herbert. A graduate of Indi- ana University and a football star in his own right. Coach Herbert came to Tolieston in 1943 to shape its boys into football players Coach was himself a member of the 1942 College All- Star team and blocked for Tommy Harmon. This year Coach Herbert took a group of al- most inexperienced boys and made of them a team that went ahead to place second in the N. I. H. S. C. He coaches varsity and reserve football, freshman, eighth grade, and reserve basketball, and track. With Coach Eddie Herbert at its helm Tolles- ton's football future looks bright. Tolles- ton showed great form and proved a team with which to reckon . . . after the upset tie with Roosevelt of Gary, the Blue Raiders blazed on to one vic- tory after another . . . the tricky back- field play sparked the line to hit hard ... to name the star players would be to name the whole team . . . with a victory over Froebel tucked under their belts, the Raiders surged ev. r onward by bowling over Hammond Tech, Hor- ace Mann, Hobart. However, this low standing only proved one thing . . . Tolleston was a tournament team, for it was the Raiders who won the Holiday Tournament and then went to the semi-finals in the Sectional Basketball Tourney . . . Since this was Coach Vance's first year since his return from the Navy ... we agree that he has done a very good job .. . Tolleston's victory in the Holiday Tourna- ment and Raiders advance to the Semi-Finals in the Sectionals proved his ability as a coach.
