AMERICA MUST SUCCEED!! When, in the history of America, has our country aepended so much upon the young people? When, in the history of Americo, have our public institutions been so seriously jeopardized by the thoughts and plans of those who do not believe in Democracy? When, in the history of America, has the youth of our graduating classes had the opportunity to participate in the molding of the destiny of our country as the present? When, in the history of America, has youth responded with the willingness and deter- mination that they have today? When, in the history of America, has the youth of our graduating classes had a greater opportunity to live and do things for humanity. There are hundreds of thousands of young people leaving the American high schools today with one purpose in mind; namely, to protect the American way of living. Those who are yet in school are participating in victory corps activities, scrap drives, bond drives, etc. Parents are also very active in war work, bond drives, etc. Many pleasures have been limited or eliminated. Food, gas, fuel, and clothing are rationed. Democracy lives in the habits and attitudes of our people— in the home—in the church—in the school—and other institu- tions where the individual cooperates with his fellow men to develop desirable living situations. Democracy, like other great movements, cannot stand still. It must develop; it must grow or it will die and be replaced by philosophies of life less desirable. We are now engaged in a great world war, testing whether our country or any other democractic form of government, can long endure. America is fighting for those things which we have enjoyed for many years—the American way of living. America must succeed; with the help of the American youth America will succeed! JAMES W. STANDLEY Principal
