“-long may it wave - O'er The land of the free and The home of the brave!” AMERICA MUST SUCCEED!! When, in the history of America, has our country aepended so much upon the young people? When, in the history of Americo, have our public institutions been so seriously jeopardized by the thoughts and plans of those who do not believe in Democracy? When, in the history of America, has the youth of our graduating classes had the opportunity to participate in the molding of the destiny of our country as the present? When, in the history of America, has youth responded with the willingness and deter- mination that they have today? When, in the history of America, has the youth of our graduating classes had a greater opportunity to live and do things for humanity. There are hundreds of thousands of young people leaving the American high schools today with one purpose in mind; namely, to protect the American way of living. Those who are yet in school are participating in victory corps activities, scrap drives, bond drives, etc. Parents are also very active in war work, bond drives, etc. Many pleasures have been limited or eliminated. Food, gas, fuel, and clothing are rationed. Democracy lives in the habits and attitudes of our people— in the home—in the church—in the school—and other institu- tions where the individual cooperates with his fellow men to develop desirable living situations. Democracy, like other great movements, cannot stand still. It must develop; it must grow or it will die and be replaced by philosophies of life less desirable. We are now engaged in a great world war, testing whether our country or any other democractic form of government, can long endure. America is fighting for those things which we have enjoyed for many years—the American way of living. America must succeed; with the help of the American youth America will succeed! JAMES W. What it has planned for us, no one knows. Whether it is good or bad, we will have to accept it for what it is. To the Class of '43 it means that we will be leaving high school and stepping into a new world of tomorrow where we will be starting life on our own. Some will fight in Uncle Sam's Armed Forces; some will work in defense plants; and others will follow an educational career. Who knows? Fate plays strange tricks upon mankind. We, the Class of '43, wish to extend our thanks and appreciation to the Board of Education, Mr. Standley, and the Faculty. They have successfully led us through our four years of high school. We thank you, each and everyone, for the help, leader- ship, and encouragement that you gave. The Class of '43 has advanced well upon the road to success, and is well pre- pared to face the dim future after graduation. It seemed that with the outbreak of the war, education would be virtually torn from its place in the world. Instead, the war has bound it together and made it stronger than ever as we of Tolleston High School and other high schools throughout the United States have proved. There was a fear of labor shortage; it was the high school students of America who accepted the challenge and went into industry and still continued their education. There are many things that we are deprived of because of the war, but we are getting along without them and manufacturing recreation and happiness wherever and whenever we can. There will be many things that will live in our memory; there will be other things that we will forget. Whatever the case may be, our high school days will always stand vividly in our minds. We, the youth of today, who are leaving school will be the citizens of tomorrow. Will we have to look forward to a tomorrow of distrust and treachery as is going on in some parts of the world today? Can there ever be peace and happiness if you dis- trust your neighbor, friend, or business associates? Can there be trust if there is treachery ready to offset it? No! It hardly would be logical. Therefore, we must learn to place our trust where it will do the most good. If we can learn to forget yesterday, live today, and look forward to a bright tomorrow; we will have accomplished a great deal toward a tomorrow of happiness. We hope that the Class of '43 has set a standard for future graduates. We know that the Blue and White will do as much for them as it has for us. The high standard that Tolleston High School has taught us made us better suited to fight for the Red, White and Blue of our NATION. He took second place. R.O.T.C. COMMISSIONED OFFICERS Under the guidance and leadership of our P. M. S. and T., Lieutenant Colonel Hayden, we have established one of Tolleston's most successful R.O.T.C. units. He has capably picked Sgt. Vandergriff and his assistant, Sgt. Johnson, as instructors. They have started this unit at the beginning of the school term with one hundred and fifty cadets and fifteen possible officers. From this, they have developed a unit of strength and a spirit which is hard to be found. Cadet officers were given their commissions and started on their endless toil to help promote the ideas of being a unit of which Tolleston can well be proud. It has been an everlasting memory for us cadets to see our unit reach its goals. Many of us boys will graduate and, shortly after, wear the colors of our Nation. We will not be meek or backward about this, but will stride with confidence towards being a better soldier. On behalf of Lieutenant Colonel Hayden, Sgt. Vandergriff, Sgt. Johnson, and myself, I should like to extend our sincere appreciation to the cadet officers and cadets for their wonderful co-operation and success this school year. Seven years ago our school brought forth a new addition, con- ceived in education and dedicated to the proposition of a new high school. Now we are engaged in World War II, testing whether this high school or any high school, can long endure. We, of Tolleston High School, are doing a great deal toward the winning of this war. Three of our men teachers are now serv- ing in the Armed Forces of America and others are to follow dur- ing the summer. Many of our bovs have left school to serve our country on the various battlefronts of this great struggle for Democracy. But in a larger sense, these boys of Tolleston are but a few in the large Army that makes up the Allied Forces of today.
