FOREIGN STUDENTS SPAIN, BRAZIL, IVIEXICO, VIETNAM Victor de Cambra, iupper rightl an exchange student from lvladrid, Spain, found Tolleson interesting and different: ln Spain, you don't have to change classes, the teachers do the changing. He added, We have to learn obligatory subjects such as basic culture. When asked about what he thought to be the most difficult thing to adjust to, Victor replied, The idiomatic expressions . . . different accentuation, different words, and people speaking more quickly and louder. Ricardo Reis, an exchange student from Brazil stated: The Brazilian system of education is totally different from the American. ln Brazil, we are required to take ten subjects every year. We don't have as many sports, and the schools are not as big. . . In Brazil we have only 3 years in high school. The first two years are new sub- jects, then the last year is a review for a big test required for graduation. . . ln Brazil we call the teachers by their first names. Ricardo said he missed his language, Portuguese, and the places he used to go to. Victor missed the music, the transportation, and the Spanish way of life. Alicia Cruz, one of several new students from Mexico, stated that schools here are much better. School lunches, nurses and busses are not common in Mexican schools. li -s rf i life. ilihilllltli E-'ii 12 'I ' ' I AC' ggf l.5,,iNt,,5, llrfiifiiijfii ,L jj f it Q ' ig' . it Q- j ,ts f.
