He passed away on September 8 1952 Most of us here at olleson Union High School knew h1m only for a year. It didn't take any of us even that long to realize what -a wonderful man he was. LeRoy Gerstberger was born January, 1919, in Dodge City, Kansas. He always maintained a high scholastic stand- ing and was an honor student of his class, being the salutatorian. His classmates recognized his leadership ability and as a high school senior he was elected to the presidency of both the Boys' Club and Kappa Society. The same year he served as honorary football captain. He was always an active, participating member in every organization to which he belonged. He enrolled in Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas in 1937, and fouryears later received his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He was a member of the Athenian Literary Society. In 1941, be married Violet King, and they had two children, Richard and Zenita. LeRoy attended school during the summer and received his Master's Degree in Education at Greeley, Colorado in 1950. He also completed one summer's work toward a Doctorate Degree in Education. While at Greeley, he was selected as a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Literary Society, an organization whose membership consists only cf students whose grades are in the upper ten percent. LeRoy's life's ambition was to be a teacher and he served in that capacity in many Kansas schools. Every one with whom he was associated respected him highly. His even disposition and calm manner was always a steadying influence for the teams he coached. He was never too busy to help when needed. His teaching career was interrupted by World War II. He served in the Air Corps 29 months, and was transferred to the Infantry and received his discharge in January, 1946. In October, 1950, his teaching career was again interrupted when, as an inactive rescrvist, he was recalled to duty and sent to the Korean front. He returned home lay 28, 195L That fall he accepted a teaching and coaching position here in Tolleson but was forced to resign in March, 1952 because of the Illness which took his life. . ' We, of Tolleson Union High School, wish to dedicate our 1953 Year Book to LeRoy Gerstberger who embodied all that a man should be. He was to us a friend and teacher, but to others with whom he came in contact, he was also many other things. A good student, a religious man, a fine husband, a loving and understanding father and a courageous soldier. We remember then, the oft quoted lines, The good die youn 1 g'f..t,.vf...' lk A - Mr. John K. Herrera, our new superintendent. A.B. A.S.C. Ulagstaffl, M.A. A.S.C. QF1agsta R Are A r is ' ,Q George T. Playing one of the roughest schedules in the school's history, in- cluding seven conference and three non-conference games, the Wolverines made a real fine showing. 'f In the season's opener, played at Tolleson, the Wolverines played the highly regarded Chandler Wolves. It was a rough, close game I3-7 victory. all the way, but when the final gun sounded, Tolleson had itself a well earned The following Saturday, thegMaroon and Gold Footballers journeyed to Miami. The next opponents were down to the Ajo goal line, and the Vandals emerged as victors with the Wolverines on the short end of a Ajo's rugged Red Raiders. All through the contest the Wolverines drove right but they just couldn't seem to lug it over. The Wolverines finally scored with three minutes left in the game. The missed extra point made the difference as Ajo was the winner by a 7-6 score. Tolleson tried desperately to get their hands on the ball in the closing minutes of the game but Ajo held onto the pigskin to scrape through by one point. The fourth game was against the arch enemy, the Litchfield Owls. Tolleson was favored to win, but as previous contests had proven, anything is possible when these two teams meet. The Wolverines came through as expected, however, and won the contest by a I4-7 score. For the seniors on the team, this marked the fourth victory in their four years of competition with the Owls. The Scottsdale Beavers provided the opposition for the Wolverines next tussle. Tolleson couldn't seem to get rolling and they succumed to their perennial road jinx, as the Beavers came out on top by a score of I8-7. Playing their next game at home the Wolverines fared much better against Peoria. The Maroon and Gold played one of their better games as they walloped the Panthers to the tune of 42-0 The traditionally tough Buckeye Hawks, playing heads up ball before a Homecoming crowd, romped over the lackadaisical Wolverines 40-l3. Bouncing back from this loss, Tolleson won their next game by the score of 26-I2 from the Parker Broncs. For their next game the Wolverines traveled to pins, the Casa Grande Cougars. Carver's mighty Monarchs. Carver was heavily favored to trounce Tolleson, on the basis of their season's record of nine wins and no losses, plus the fact that they had established several scoring records while compiling these nine victories. Shortly after the game started, however, the Wolverines showed that they were going to be no pushover for Carver. Tolleson marched to a first period touchdown, but they downs to win I3-7. The Wolverines made a real scoring threat in the last and Tolleson came within one foot of pilling the season's the ball for the remaining few plays. The I952-i953 Basketball Season By Jerry Mathias ,b This year's Tolleson basketball team, coached by Bob Korte, went through one of the greatest sea- sons in Wolverine History. The Tolleson hoopsters finished the season with a record of seventeen wins and ten losses, and they won the Consolation Cup.in the West Central District playoff. in the State playoff at Tucson, the boys beat Tempe in the first round, but were finally eliminated by Clifton in the second round. ' 3' The Wolverines led by All-ConferencerCenter, Jack Villa, started the season with a bang by winning their first three games. The first three victims were Buckeye, Gila Bend, and Litchfield. The win- ning streak was halted by Parker in a tightly contested ball game which Parker won 47-38. Undaunted, the Tolleson dribble artists came back to win their next five out of seven encounters, losing only to Coolidge by eight points and the State Champions, Scottsdale, by six points. At this point in the season, Jack Villa had bucketed a total of I90 points for an average of I7.3 points per game. After trouncing the Phoenix indian School, the Wblverines lost two conference games in a row. The first to the towering Carver Monarchs, and the second to the hustling Litchfield Owls. The next five games saw Tolleson winning three and losing two. The two losses were at the hands of Class A clubs, Glendale and St. Mary's. The night of Friday the thirteenth ffebruary l3l, was anything but unlucky for the Wolverines. lt was the first time in four years that Tolleson had beaten Ajo, the score 48-44. In the final game of the regular season, the Wolverines, playing without Jack Villa, who was in- jured in the Ajo game, went down to defeat at the hands of the mighty Scottsdale Beavers, 53-3I. ln the district playoffs at Peoria, Tolleson lost their first game to Wickenburg, a team they had beaten twice in the regular season. Losing to Wickenburg put the Wolverines into the consolation bracket and they had to win four games in order to go to the State Tournament in Tucson. With a 'never quit spiritn, our fighting basketball team came through as never before. After dropping Bagdad 57-39, they followed up with another stunning win over Ajo, this time 57-55. Then came Wickenburg again and this time the Wolverines chewed the Wranglers to shreds 67-42. This victory put Tolheson in the consolation finals against Parker. Despite the rigorous schedule, an inspired Tolleson team nosed out Parker 43-42 in an overtime thriller that had the stands jumping with excite- ment. This win put the fighting Wolverines into the State playoffs. Tolleson drew Tempe as their first opponent. It was a tough game even though the final score was Tolleson 50, Tempe 39. Going into the fourth quarter, the Wolverines were behind 29-30, but in that final quarter they outscored Tempe 2I-9 and pulled the game out of the fire. The last game our team played this year was a disastrous one. Clifton took advantage of the Wolverines' 'cold' shooting and outscored our boys 34-Il in the second half. The final score was 63-39, and now the record books are closed on a wonderful, exciting basketball season. The season is worth remembering because of the two victories over Ajo, the winning of the Consola- tion Cup in the District playoffs, and Jack Villa's election as All-Conference Center. All in all it was a great season: one of the greatest Tolleson has ever known.
