The first several days after our arrival were spent in orientation. During this time we also began many lasting friendships with stu- dents from other schools. The work was not easy, as we were soon to learn. In Cincinnati we found it heartbreaking to see some of those children dying from leukemia, but found it rewarding to see a child who had been acutely ill for weeks, take his first step again, alone. A completely different situation greeted us at State Hospital. Here were some patients merely existing who had been there for a major part of their lives. In an attempt to decrease the number of patients in this situation, we saw massive drug therapy being used. It was amazing to watch the rapid change in the actions and attitudes of newly admitted patients. We feel that both our pediatric and psychiatric affiliation were challenging and an important part of our training. We wait for it from the moment we enter the front doors of Croxton. The anticipation of it offers encouragement during the long months of hard work. What a wonderful feeling when our Big Sisn re- places our organdy cap with the traditional Toledo Hospital cap. We know that there is harder work ahead, but we have taken a big step toward our ambition of someday grac- ing our cap with a black band.
