Toledo Hospital I 0: X . A 0 X School of N ursmg ' 2701 Oatis Avenue Toledo, Oh 0 a Xx 1 Q ou 1 I 1' The Nightingale Pledge I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly: To pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischie- vous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standards of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping, and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my profession. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those com- mitted to my care. Our Pin VVhen the first class of the Toledo Hospital Training School for Nurses graduated in 1895, they received an intricately designed pin which was made from a ten dollar gold piece with the initials 'cT.T.S.', encircled in a wreath. There is very little information available as to the pins origin. Every graduating class member has re- ceived this ping though, due to government restrictions on defacing of money in the 1920's the pin is now made of yellow gold. In 1947, the lettering on the pin was changed to 'fT.S.N.,l by the Alumnae Association. Again in 1959 the letter- ing was changed to f'T.H.S.N. to include The Toledo Hospital School of Nursing. w 2 RQ ' . ,V fl .9 S 'N X ,draw , ' 0 . By demonstration, role playing, and using themselves as guinea pigs, they learn the necessary skills used in nursing. Such things as bed making, temperatures, blood pressures, and many other more difhcult procedures are learned in this manner under the watchful eye of the Fundamentals Department. For a two week period we learn how to handle many unusual situa- tions in the Emergency Room. Here we function as a team to handle minor injuries or major illnesses. Another part of our education involves the Out-Patient depart- ment, which consists of a variety of clinics. These clinics are at- tended by people in our area who are unable to afford and receive adequate care. Dietary Service In our first year of training we are presented with a course in Nutrition, where in labs we make and sample some of the special foods that our patients must eat or drink. As we pro- gress on into our second year we spend four weeks in Diet Therapy. Here we learn the values of special diets in different diseases. Our Have an Apple, Although our Psychiatric affiliation took us only across town in distance, we were entering an entirely different Held of nursing, that of caring for the mentally ill. Our main purpose, we found, was to learn to accept the pa- tient as he was, though not necessarily to approve of his behavior. The keys and the locked doors seemed to pro- duce an air of secrecy but we knew it was to protect the patient. Our class came in on the First day of September, Needless to say we were really excited about meeting new friends and getting used to domiitory life. The first few months meant walking through the park to the University. After Christmas we started to spend more time working on the floors. It was hard at Hrst getting used to the routine, but before we knew it, we were well adjusted and more able to take Care of our patients. The most important day to all of us was the day we were capped. This marked the beginning of really being a part of the nursing tea1n. Wyse An event that is eagerly awaited each year by the stu- dents is the annual carnival, This year it was held on Friday, October 27. Each class was responsible for sev- eral booths. These booths consisted of a bowling alley, jail, restaurant, dart throw, balloon shaving, limbo, the unforgettable tunnel and the niother's club bakesale. As a grand Finale to the carnival, a dance was held to celebrate its financial success. Going - going - gone C. Capping Capping is probably one of the most memorable experiences in the life of a nurse. After completion of the difficult probation period, the student nurse eagerly anticipates Capping. W'hen she receives the traditional nurses cap of Toledo Hospital, she has, at last, reached the first step in achieving her goal. lt is a tradition and an inspiration to every student nurse, Lamps are lighted by Florence Nightingale, UMotherH of nursing, who encourages them to hold their lamps high and to bring light into the lives and hearts of the people under their care. As proud parents watch, the student takes the pledge of nurses all over the world, N. . .
