Dr. Bernard Steinberg, Chief of Research and Pathology Research The Institute of Medical Research conducts investigations in several biological and medical fields. Une of the major problems is the study of the mechanism of blood cell for- mations, physiologically and in disease. Since leukemia is one of the diseases in which there is a disturbance of this mechanism, major effort has been placed in investigation. During the last year experiments clarified the problem of bleeding, one of the causes of death in leukemia. The clinical research on leukemia is conducted through the Hartford Project on the sixth floor of the hospital. The proj- ect, started in 1956, is supported by grants from the- John A. Hartford Foundation, Inc. Patients come to the Hartford Project once a week for examination during the remission phase of leukemia. During the acute phase they are hos- pitalized and treated. All expenses, including hospitaliza- tion, if the patient has no insurance, are paid for by the proje-ct. Patience and persistence yield progress. Mrs. Owens, Hartford Project Nurse
