Their work ranges from diagraming the structural units of the human heart on a classroom blackboard to guiding the student nurse as she assists the doctor with a diagnostic test. Everything is beginning to tall into its appropriate place with a meaning it never had before. We find time to show artistic ideas, mechanical abilities and even a little drama spiced with comedy. Activity began immediately with probie initiation. Sisterly love was lavishly displayed through pro- vision of good square meals, fresh air walks to the Colony, and realization of the importance of humility. Cats, rats, mice and fleas . . . Remember the sophisticated swing of the Christmas dance? Our domestic abilities seeped through when we successfully conducted two bake sales. lt was saddening to realize while attending our Farewell Banquet at the Aku Aku Room that time together, as a whole class, was climaxing. We discovered how close we really were when labor- ing on our Variety Show. Constant planning, re- hearsing, then, the thrill of opening night, are indescribably precious moments. J. Cronbcugh S. Q, ,gat The Preclinical Class This is the trial period of nursing life where the patient is so much in mind that often we are afraid of him. Somehow everything we have been taught in the past few months seems to have gotten confused when we compare what we have learned with our first patient. Suddenly we are on the wards with the rest of the nursing team and in the excite- ment of it all we have forgotten everything. But each day, slowly, everything begins to correlate. lt's hard! We have seen despair, heartbreak, death, and happiness and through t it it all it is only professional to keep a calm, smiling, unreavealing face. Here it is where we learn what it is to be a young woman, with a ,.,- ...N maturity beyond our years. That is, until we have left the hospital, and return to the domitory. Then we are again young students! No one can comfort and be as understand- ing, no one can speak with such a light soothing voice. No one but our own preclinical student. . 55 X ,a 1, D' 'eww' item.. At this time, usually the first day of the second week of our Probies training, it's fun, fun and more fun, for the Intermediates of course. There is the usual garb which at Toledo Hospital is traditional and this con- sists of: hair worn in pony tail, blouses, skirts and sweaters worn backwards, one nylon and one bobby sock with two different types of shoes. Among other things the Pre-clinicals were required to march through the Colony Shopping Center wearing their outrageous outfits. The Seniors provided entertainment to get ac- quainted and show the Probies they didn't forget them. To wind up this very busy Initiation Week the Inter- mediates gave a party at which each student was given a stunt to perform. This is a very gala affair and usually enjoyed by everyone except the Pre- clinicals! Refreshments were served and Initiation was over for another year. 41 Duck! He re comes on Intermediate. The Executive Council is composed ot the Student Association officers and representatives from each of the three classes. The Council meets monthly, preceding the mass meetings, and then takes its suggestions to the student body. The Executive Council serves as the governing body of the Stu- dent Association. In some of our activities, we presented the yearly carnival and also sold pen sets. Our main welfare interests were our Thanksgiving and Christmas families. The basketball team and Convention rep- resentatives are both financed by the Student Association. Chemotherapy, Insulin Shock, Electro- shock, Occupational, and Recreational Therapy are the types ot treatment avail- able. Dr. Bernard Steinberg, Chief of Research and Pathology Research The Institute of Medical Research conducts investigations in several biological and medical fields. Une of the major problems is the study of the mechanism of blood cell for- mations, physiologically and in disease. Since leukemia is one of the diseases in which there is a disturbance of this mechanism, major effort has been placed in investigation. During the last year experiments clarified the problem of bleeding, one of the causes of death in leukemia. The clinical research on leukemia is conducted through the Hartford Project on the sixth floor of the hospital. The proj- ect, started in 1956, is supported by grants from the- John A. Hartford Foundation, Inc. Patients come to the Hartford Project once a week for examination during the remission phase of leukemia. During the acute phase they are hos- pitalized and treated. All expenses, including hospitaliza- tion, if the patient has no insurance, are paid for by the proje-ct. Patience and persistence yield progress. Mrs. Owens, Hartford Project Nurse is 2 5 4 2 ? In retrospect, we of the White Cap staFl, would like to express our gratitude to all concerned in making possible the White Cap ot l96l. Snapping of pictures, sharpening of pencils and wits was an ever present pastime made easier through co-operation from fellow Senior Class- mates. Likewise, a big thank-you is extended to Powell's Studio for their willingness and dependa- bility which more than filled our needs. In concluding this book, as well as student lite here at Toledo Hospital, we would like to pay tribute to Miss Joanne Collins who has so expertly guided our class throughout our three years and especially as advisor ot the White Cap, l96l.
