M Commander John J. Haffey Jr. Commander John I. Haffey, Jr., USN graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1941. Commander Haffey served aboard the destroyers LANSDALE DD-426, BAUER DM-26 and EATON DD-520 throughout World War II and partici- pated in the Casablanca, Iwo Jima and Okinawa operations. For service during the Okinawa Campaign he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and his ship the USS BAUER was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. In 1945 he assumed command of the USS DIACHENKO APD-123 which was followed by a tour of duty on the staff of Commander Service Forces Pacific Fleet from August 1947 until July 1950. ' D. C. In August 1950 he reported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Wash1ngton, and served in the Congression until March 1955 he was Executive OfHcer of USS PRAIRIE AD-15. 311, 7222 f l 4 fl 1U N X M Na+ Nl ll --C l:'i .L Eff mga-ia: Captain Elliott Loughlin While attending the United States Naval Academy from 1929-1933, Captain Loughlin distinguished himself as an athlete. He was a member of the All-American basketball team in 1932 and 1933 and was a member of the varsity tennis team for three years. Upon graduation in 1933 he was awarded the Thompson Trophy which is presented annually to the Midshipman who has done the most for the promotion of athletics. Captain Loughlin graduated from Submarine School in 1938. During World War II he commanded the USS S-4, and USS QUEENFISH and was awarded the Navy Cross, Gold Star in lieu of a Second Navy Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star with V and Presidential Unit Citation. Following World War ll, Captain Loughlin served as operations officer, Commander Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet from 1945 to 1947. This was followed by tours of duties, as Executive Officer USS ORION, Commander Submarine Division 62, and Executive Oiiicer U. S. Naval Station and Commanding Oiiicer of the Historic Ship, USS REINA MERCEDES, at the U. S. Naval Academy holding this billet until July 1952. He then served as Chief Staff Oiiicer to Commander Submarine FLOTILLA ONE, and as Commander Submarine Squadron 3. This assignment was followed by a tour of duty as Director of Athletics, U. S. Naval Academy. Prior to reporting to TOLEDO, Captain Loughlin commanded the USS MISSISSINEWA.
