Ill on EXEC COMMANDER Arthur H. Berndtson, USN A 1940 graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, Commander Bcrndtson's first duty was as gunnery and division officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS ENTERPRISE when she was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation during the early part of World War ll. ln December 1942 he was ordered aboard marine torpedo boats in the Pacific. While serving as a squadron executive and commanding officer, and operating in the Solomon Island, he was awarded the Silver Star and his first Bronze Star with combat HV . From May 1945 to January 1946 he served as executive oliicer of the destroyer USS MASSEY in the Pacihc, and then commanded the destroyer minesweeper USS HAMBLETON in the Atlantic until September 1946. Subsequently he received post graduate training at George Washington University in Washington, and received his LLB degree in law in 1949. This was followed by duty as flag secretary and aide to Commander Cruiser Division THREE, where he was awarded the Navy's Commendation Medal with combat '4 V '7 during operation in Korea. From May 1951 to December 1952 he commanded the destroyer USS STICKELL in the Far East, and while there received a Cold Star in lieu of a second Bronze Star Medal with combat V . ln January of 1953 he was assigned duty in San Francisco in the 12th Naval District Legal Office. ln June, 1955 he served on the staff of Commander Train- ing Command as Fleet Schools and Ashore Training Officer, holding this post until June, 1957 when he reported to the heavy cruiser USS TOLEDO for duty as Excutive Officer.
