Reiter, fr., USN Captain Harry L. Reiter, Jr., USN, is the son of an Army Officer and Was born on December 16, 1909, in Columbia, South Carolina, but spent the major part of his youth in Denver, Colorado. He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy with the class of 1932 and served successively in the battleship USS OKLAHOMA, the carrier USS LANGLEY and the destroyer USS CRAVEN be- fore returning to the Naval Academy in 1939 to attend a post graduate course in Ordnance Engineering. At the outbreak of World War 11, he was a Test Firing Officer at the Naval Proving Ground, Dahlgren, Virginia. He later served as gunnery officer in the light cruiser USS OMAHA and again in the heavy cruiser USS QUINCY when it participated in the invasions of Normandy and Southern France. At the Warfs end, he was gunnery officer of the new carrier USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT. He subsequently Was ordered to the light cruiser USS HOUSTON as executive officer and then returned to the Naval Proving Ground as Special Projects Officer. ln 1950 at the outbreak of the Korean campaign he took command of the destroyer USS MCKEAN and participated in the seizure and occupation of lnchon and operated With the famed. fast carrier Task Force 77. He later served as a member of the Pacific Fleet Evaluation Group engaged in analyzing and evalu- ating naval operations in the Korean War. Captain Reiter graduated from the Armed Forces Staff Col- lege, Norfolk, Va., in 1950 and attended the National War College, Washington, D. C., in 1952-53. He later served as a staff and faculty member at the National War College. In 19541-55 he commanded the fleet oiler USS PAWCATUCK in the Atlantic and' Mediterranean and in September of 1955 reported to Commander' 1 First Fleet for duty as Deputy Chief of Staff. The Captain re-Q ported aboard TOLEDO in September, 1957.
