A , Il EVENTS AND DISCO VERIES III ON BOARD TOLEDO ,:q:w- , ff Command of a ship is the responsibility of one oflicer. To meet this responsibility the officer exercising command must achieve the integration of the various departments of the ship into a teamg he must combine the efforts and contributions of the teamis components with his experience to produce, correct, promote and properly evaluate decisions, While at the same time being mindful of the health, welfare, morale and training of every individual in the ship. The ultimate measure of success of command is the ability of the ship to perform any task she may be called upon to do. Such success while the responsibility of one man, can be obtained only through the understanding, co- operation and hard Work of all hands. This latter is what has made TOLEDO a fine ship and on the following pages is the story of the men who did the worli. To all of you Well donew and my thanks for a happy cruise. Discovered by a group of seven officers while shopping in a department store in Nagoya, the hat was the immediate source of gales of laughter. lnstantly all resources C5584-OJ were pooled to obtain the hat -the only one of its kind in the store. By mutual consent LT White was to wear it. ln fact no one else wanted to wear such a hat. Later we found that we paid a cheap price for the many humorous moments to be derived from it. Startled looks from Japanese storekeepers, giggles from groups of schoolgirls, and whistles from the fantail greeted the wearer of the unique sornbrero. LT White professed to be waging a war against convention with his multi- colored headpiece. V ' A Determined to quiet the remarks against what he called his Ncraggy hat with character , LT White enlisted the aid of LT Sweet, CAPT Thompson, and several other officers. Knowing the crew'sladmiration for Captain Wilson, they reasoned that if the skipper were to wear the hat, all opposition would be silenced. This was planned in spite of the Old Manis avowed pledge never to be seen in that thingw. At a party in Yokosuka the plan was put into effect. The Captain must wear the hat! Huge sums of money were apparently wagered. Shouts of both encouragement and dismay were uttered as Captain Wilson, true to his word, crushed the crusade land hatj underfoot with a well-placed stomp. Needless to say, the reform'7 party was chagrined, but in an inspired moment, the Captain eased the pain with the announce- ment that for said privilege of a good old-fashioned stomp, he and all others would donate one dollar to the cruise book fund. Almost at once MPC flourished, and amid wails of anguish from some of the incorporated owners, 23 officers ground the poor hat underfoot. Some took advantage of the situation twice. Rumor spread that CDR Connelly, and others, were disappointed that they were unable to stomp from higher than allowed altitude. ' Additional money was collected for the privilege of committing mayhem on the little chapeau on another occasion. Two of the original owners were expelled from the corporation for allegedly stomping the cherished hat, but in the meantime the total amount of money for the cruise book mounted to seventy dollars. A It is therefore fitting that this Ncraggy hat with character , which has undergone so much abuse for the cruise book, be included within its covers. + I K if - - ' - --A - - ff W..-: ........awz-r.-W?-21-:'-a::'.-Ei f7f1--'-6.11:-1:HfKt i1'-1'.:f1?- 2-152 'W p,.,.--4 V fl x TO A GREAT EXTENT, A NATION ON WHEELS RURAL JAPAN L BUT THE CLAK CLAK CLAK CONTINUES I K, V, . 1 ' I 4 - A 3 .. 4175-H91 ' THE CULTURE OF AN AREA: KYOTO'S GOLDEN PAVILION, THE GIRLS OF TAKARAZUKA, AND A WOOD-BLOCK PRINTER AT WORK 'Www MQ. -A v x A- , X! - --f-1-...f, f .. From the time a man reports for duty his everyday life is centered around this division. His records must he kept up to date, his advancement in rate recorded, his longevity credited at the proper time. And there comes a time in every man's Navy career that shore duty will he foremost in his mind. All these things go through the Personnel Office. When you pick up the SEABLADE, or as you wander down the passageway to chow and pick up the Press News, this means that someone in the Print Shop printed hoth. All correspondence going from or coming to TOLEDO must go through the Captain's Oflice. Every man must take out a progress course in order to advance in rate. Many men want to further educate themselves through USAFL This is handled hy the Training OH1ice. Every man likes to read and TOLEDO has one of the most well-equipped libraries in the Fleet. Men also need spiritual guidance, so the Chaplainls Office comes into view. The Legal Oflicer takes care of legal matters, of course, and acts as our personal lawyer whenever the need arises. Also coming under this department are the familiar lVlAA's, who see that shipls regulations are carried out. Well, that takes care of your sea-bag. Let's go topside and take a gander. T Up on the masts you see the reason for our being aboard. Yes, those are the radar antennas. Right there on top of the forward superstructure, you see the Forward Lookout Station. Thatis where we coordinate our scope info with the visual info from the Lookouts. They tell us the type of ship or aircraft and help us to give a more accurate evaluation of the contact to the Bridge. Underway, we have quite a few watches to stand: phone talkers, radio telephone talkers, air and surface scope tracers, supervisors and, of course, lookouts. We do more than just plot and evaluate contacts. Vile may be called on to assist the OOD in changing station in a Task Force or helping the Navigator determine our position by the use of radar fixes. The Gunnery Depart- ment needs us during Air Defense and Shore Bombard- ment exercises. We are literally the eyes and ears of the- ship. lknow that you'll like TOLEDO and her crew. The cry is often heard on TOLEDO's Signal Bridge as Signal- men perform their daily function of receiving and transmitting visual communications. Signalmen, a reinstituted rate, are not fair weather boysw as they are often required to stand watches during the most adverse climatic conditions. However, we in the OS Division do not mind since we know that we are doing a vital job in keeping TOLEDO Well informed in all phases of operations. Two yeomen round out the OS gang. M FIR T Two distinct species of Homo Sapien Navius, living in close harmony, comprise lst Division. - Gunnerls Mates dwell in the Warm security of Turret l, the inner workings of which are a deep mystery to the unini- tiated. Turret Captain EMIELITA, CMl, and a crew of Englishmen and Sheepherders keep the turret in top mechanical condition, ever ready to carry out an assigned mission. With a coffee land teaj mess, Care Packagesw from home and soothing guitar music, the GM's emerge only to hit the beach, help Pappy aboard and standby for Packette. A different breed are the BM's who are con- stantly encouraged in the performance of their duties by ROBINSON, BMl. Regardless of the elements, these fresh airloving outdoor men keep TOLEDO's front porch in 4.0 shape. Of great assistance to them in their daily work is a wide command of salty language and an ability to be heard over a full gale. At GQ it is the BM's who provide the manpower to man the turret and when TOLEDO anchors, it is they who drop the starboard hook, insuring that we don't drift far from the landing and liberty. Well Mates, that's the lst! Division. One warning, though, before you turn the page. lf youire ever on the focsle and see a camera running toward you, don7t get frightened for its only another lst Division shutterbug that has momentarily escaped from a BM and will soon be caught. Let's see: Rifle and compartment inspection are over. The new Guard of the Day assumes the duty. Each TOLEDO Marine stands 8 hours guard duty every other day. Around the clock, 8-I2, I2-4, 41-8, the Guard is relieved and posted. It is a never ending cycle of Marine vigilance. F What else is in store for the Marines afloat? They make up the main striking force of the Ship's Landing Party, consequently attendance at frequent classes on tactics, wea- pons, and other military subjects is a must',. They man Mount 31 during General Quarters and IAA on the forecastlefNGO7s attend classes on leader-ship and class instruction. Our crack drill team participated in and won the llth of July Parade at Huntington Beach, California and high honors in the American Legion Parade in Bellingham, Washington. Several weeks are set aside for infantry training at Camp Pendleton and Okinawa. Markmanship training and requalification con- sumes another two weeks at Camp Mathews. Constant physical exercise sessions while at sea keep the Marines prepared. No longer is the hanger used for the stowage of boats, line, and other miscellaneous gear. lnstead, it now serves as the workshop for the missilemen. At the entrance to the area you are greeted by a marine, who will allow only those who have a pass to inter. lnside you will find not only GS rates but also GM, BM, and ET rates. The total complement is live otlicers and 20 enlisted men. Each has his own special part in the operation. Carefully, each one sets about his task in the preparation and checkout of the bird. They can be identified by the precision instruments of their trade-Stillson wrenches, hammers, hacksaws, etc. This small handful of men is responsible not only for the heating systems aboard ship, but also for the laundry and galley machinery, hydraulic boards, steering gear, anchor windlass, airplane crane, and deck winches, to name a few. The Ice Machine Gang , led by Weston, MMT, are the boys that really know how to cool it. ln addition to the reefers they take care of all scuttlebutts and air conditioning units aboard ship. Brown, ENI, and his boys of the Boat Cangw keep all the boats as well as the emergency diesel generators in good operating condition. Then there is the Machine Shop Gang , led by Anderson, MR1 and Smith, MMT, who are generously assisted by the Welder, Carey, ME1, and the keeper of the crib, Lassiter, MRI. WI-IERE'S MY RELIEF? AT THE FOWARD FUELING STATION The biggest division on TOLEDO has a big respon sibility, The Boiler Tenders of B Division keep a constant supply of steam going to the main engines, turbo generators and other installations. lf any BT's happen to go the wrong way after departing this world, the heat shouldn7t bother them a bit. The oil shack, which is run by nine BT's, is responsible for fueling other ships and refueling TOLEDO. B Division is made up mostly of BT's, but there is a group called the Repair Cangfa This gang is strictly composed of Machinist's Mates whose job is the upkeep and operation of four turbo generators, which produce electrical current for the entire ship. B Division has shown great team spirit in sports during the WESTPAC tour. They proved that by displaying a fine football team. ' No doubt about it! It's a Hue division. LOOKING FOR SHORTS Two very popular phone numbers aboard the BIC Tn are 359 and 34.5, especially when the lights or fans in your compartment don't work or your phone finally gives up the battle. These two well used phone numbers are located in the Electric and IC Workshops respectively. Contrary to popular belief, the EM and ICEM does a great deal more than just change light bulbs and repair phones. They are responsible for and must keep in work- ing order almost all electrical gear and all in- terior communications gear aboard TOLEDO. Knowing the complexity of the ship, you can imagine the size of their job. The division is divided into six gangs, each with a special job to do. The Power Gang, headed by D. C. VANHOY, EM3, spends most of its time cooling the ship and crew by keeping vent motors and controllers in good repair. The Lighting Gang, with E. T. SCHRAMMEL at its helm, has a constant eye on the lighting, naturally. A lighting electrician is found doing his job anywhere from the bilges to the top of the mast and from the jackstaff to the fantail. Cracking the whip over the Shop Gang are G. YV. CONIGLIO and K. L. FRANCONE, both EM3's. They work on anything from battle lanterns to good. sized electric motors. GB. LUPTON, EM2, gets most of the Nhoto' jobs because almost all of the Distribution Gang's gear pumps, switch boards, generators and various controllers are in fire and engine rooms. Thanks to T. H. GREENE and W. V. ERICKSON, EM3,s and top men in the Battery and Ordnance Gang, batteries are always charged and ready to go into liberty boats. Ammo hoists, motors, and controllers in the mounts and turrets are all kept in fine working order so we won't be caught with our guard down in an emergency. The IC Gang works out of its own shop. The word work7' applies well to the IC's. The sweat of their toil comes to view during G Q7 when the battle phones are broken out or in the evening at movie call, where they work as projectionists. Even the ship itself is kept on course through the efforts of the IC men, for the gyrocompasses are another part of their responsibility. All of these pieces of gear are kept operative under the management of IC2,s T. I. RITZ, W. E. BACON and E. D. WILSON. Of course, as do all companies, EM and IC INC. also has its executive staff. Our presi- dent is ENSIGN MOSS, vice president is CHELEC LAIR, members of the board and all experts in their field are Chiefs PEL- LEORINO, BECKER and MILLER, and the general manager is E. J. SMITH, EMI. Recognition should not go only to the men cited, but to every man in the division. Personnel in the division are often called Snipesl' but no matter what we are called we have many vital duties to help the Engineering Depart- ment meet its commitments. This handful of men maintain and operate the two engine rooms with their main engines, evaporators, pumps, steam lines and valves. They see to it that the steam generated by the BRAVO Division branch of the Black Gang is used with maximum efficiency in the main engines and the evaporators. Although the job of answering all bellsw seems to be our main job, the operation of the evaporator is of equal importance. The evaporators, capa- ble of producing 4-8,000 gallons of fresh water a day, are the key to the engineering plant, for without them the ship would have no water for drinking and washing or steam for propulsion and electricity. V We may never see the light of day but we are glad to he in the group of men that have such a vital part to play in the opera- tion of our ship-TOLEDD. TWO ON A WRENCH First Row Buckner, C.
