IN MEMORIAM Richard J. Reynolds Mr. Richard J. Reynolds was born in Winston Salem, North Carolina, on April 4, 1906, the son of Katharine Smith Reynolds and Richard J. Reynolds, the founder of the R. J. Rey- nolds Tobacco Company. He was educated in the public schools of Winston Salem and at North Carolina State College at Raleigh, North Carolina. Mr. Reynolds, a man of extraordinary personality, with an intense and broad interest in everything from people, business, extensive travels to modern scientific concepts, was a genius in his own right. Throughout his lifetime, he was, above all, ever aware of a profound responsibility toward the welfare of his fellowman, and the fruits of his ideas and his generosity, particularly in the fields of medicine and education, are too numerous to name. In 1936, along with his two sisters, Mr. Reynolds conceived and created the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation in memory of his deceased brother, Zachary Smith Reynolds. This is a non-profit charitable foundation. A Georgia Foundation, now known as the Sapelo Island Research Foundation Inc., was established by Mr. Reynolds in 1949. The primary objective of this foundation is the furtherance of scientific research, such as in marine biology, oceanography and limnology, and it is presently supporting the University of Georgia's Marine Laboratory on Sapelo Island. A sense of adventure and undertaking was almost inherent with the name of Richard J. Reynolds. He was, at the age of 17, one of the youngest holders of a pilot's license in the country. With his ideas and experience as an aviator, he became one of the supporters and planners of early commercial air transportation. Too, his love for the sea made a passionate sailor of him and many a first prize in transoceanic sailboat-racing went to his credit. During World War II, Mr. Reynolds was chief navigating officer on a flag-ship escort carrier in the Pacific. He was director of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and Delta Airlines. He also served as Treasurer of the National Democratic Committee under Roose- velt and for a short period, as Mayor of Winston Salem. All who have known Mr. Reynolds will remember his humbleness and warmheartedness, and he will never be forgotten as a true and sincere servant to man kind.
