TABLE OF CONTENTS PAGE IN MEMORIAM Richard J. Reynolds Mr. Richard J. Reynolds was born in Winston Salem, North Carolina, on April 4, 1906, the son of Katharine Smith Reynolds and Richard J. Reynolds, the founder of the R. J. Rey- nolds Tobacco Company. He was educated in the public schools of Winston Salem and at North Carolina State College at Raleigh, North Carolina. Mr. Reynolds, a man of extraordinary personality, with an intense and broad interest in everything from people, business, extensive travels to modern scientific concepts, was a genius in his own right. Throughout his lifetime, he was, above all, ever aware of a profound responsibility toward the welfare of his fellowman, and the fruits of his ideas and his generosity, particularly in the fields of medicine and education, are too numerous to name. In 1936, along with his two sisters, Mr. Reynolds conceived and created the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation in memory of his deceased brother, Zachary Smith Reynolds. This is a non-profit charitable foundation. A Georgia Foundation, now known as the Sapelo Island Research Foundation Inc., was established by Mr. Reynolds in 1949. The primary objective of this foundation is the furtherance of scientific research, such as in marine biology, oceanography and limnology, and it is presently supporting the University of Georgia's Marine Laboratory on Sapelo Island. A sense of adventure and undertaking was almost inherent with the name of Richard J. Reynolds. He was, at the age of 17, one of the youngest holders of a pilot's license in the country. With his ideas and experience as an aviator, he became one of the supporters and planners of early commercial air transportation. Too, his love for the sea made a passionate sailor of him and many a first prize in transoceanic sailboat-racing went to his credit. During World War II, Mr. Reynolds was chief navigating officer on a flag-ship escort carrier in the Pacific. He was director of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and Delta Airlines. He also served as Treasurer of the National Democratic Committee under Roose- velt and for a short period, as Mayor of Winston Salem. All who have known Mr. Reynolds will remember his humbleness and warmheartedness, and he will never be forgotten as a true and sincere servant to man kind. SUPERINTENDENTS MESSAGE TO THE TIGER STAFF AND STUDENT BODY: Some of the most significant and far reaching developments in your life to date are the events and personalities recorded in this publication which will always remind you of some of the happiest days of your life. It is with pride that we remember our association with each other, the success of earlier graduates and observe progress and achievement on our campus. You are now entering into a new era of government and international affairs. You are living in a golden age with rapid social, economic and political changes. It is my hope and desire that you have gained the necessary skills, attitudes and compentencies commensurate with your ability to meet the challenges which may face you in the future. Congratulations and best wishes in the years to come. Sincerely, W. E. Ethington, C. S. S. 5 Mrs. Edna W. Pitts, Clerk PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The Senior or Graduating Class is always of greater concern to me than any other class in our school. Why? This class places our school, community and me on trial without an opportunity for appeal. A tree many times is judged by the fruit it bears. A school is judged by its end products, those who graduate. I cannot emphasize too strongly how important it is for each of you to remember as you leave Todd-Grant School that you represent our product. It may be well to seriously consider that you also represent the kind of home from which you came and the kind of church you attended. Since the home, the school, and the church represent those basic institutions that are so impor- tant in our lives, the thoughtful graduate strives to always hold his good name, above reproach. You are facing an ever-changing society. Some of these changes may be good, some may not, but I hope that each of you will make the necessary adjustment to face whatever changes that may come with courage, faith and understanding. I urge you to avail yourselves of every opportunity to give service and never to expect some- thing for nothing. I hope that your experience here at Todd-Grant have been influencing factors in pointing you to a good life. c ft C. A. DeVillars, Principal 6 DEDICATION Credit Where Credit is Due, O Parents and Advisors! It was you. To Parents: The Todd-Grant High School Class of 1966 wishes to pay tribute to their parents by dedicating this yearbook to them as a symbol of sincere appreciation for their having made these years of high school education possible. Often we take our parents for granted, leaving expressions of love and appreciation unspoken. You are to be congratulated for your spirit of co-operation, your perpetual faith and understanding as well as financial support through these years. Credit is due to you for accepting and carrying out the responsibility that has often called for sacrifices. It was your guidance that prompted us to study diligently. It was because of your wish for a better life for us than you have had that we were encouraged to continue despite failures and frustrations. It was you who saw the necessity of education and made us realize that success comes through adequate preparation. To Advisors: As the curtain closes on this portion of our lives, we the members of the graduat- ing class of 1966 (nineteen hundred and sixty-six) take great pleasure in dedicating this annual to our class advisors, namely: Mr. K. Ellison, Mrs. L. G. Reid, and Miss D. Scott. Life is full of decisions and we as students have not always had the best answers. We therefore, have often turned to these persons for help, and they have given of their time and energies gladly and without reservation. We sincerely hope that the dedica- tion of this book to them will, in some way, say THANK YOU to the instructors who have meant so much to us. Years will pass us by and cause us to leave the common path, but no matter where our places of residence, and no matter what our occupations, we'll remember our advisors and the start they gave us here at Todd-Grant High School.
