The Flame 1956 Published by The Senior Class of Todd-Grant H igh School Darien, Georgia Pioneer PROFESSOR JAMES L. GRANT HISTORY OF TODD-GRANT HIGH SCHOOL The Todd-Grant High School was established for the purpose of providing a high school educa- tion for the youth of McIntosh County. The Todd-Grant Industrial School, as it was called was erected in 1930. It was Professor James L. Grant, a pioneer teacher and leader in McIntosh County, who had the foresight and vision to organize the high school. Working through the McIntosh County Board of Education in co-operation with the Julius Rosenwald Fund, Mrs. Jule Atwood, C.S. Superintendent, Mr. D. E. Lane, President of the Board of Education and Mr. Robert L. Cousin, State Supervisor of Negro Education, Professor Grant established what is now the Todd-Grant High School. During the quarter century from 1930 through 1955, the school has enjoyed effective leadership. Under the leadership of Mr. C. A. DeVillars, Principal, the school has grown from a six-teacher school to a twenty-teacher accredited hi$i school with a twenth-six piece band and a forty voice chorus. The school is proud of many of its graduates who have finished accredited colleges in many sections of the United States; and many more who have taken leading positions in various walks of life in many sections of the country. We hope thaithe training which vouhave received in our public school system will help you to become useful citizens. May you continue to grow in wisdom and character. Sincerely, 'hi Mrs. Robert Young CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS Education should be fashioned to achieve desired outcomes in terms of character and behavior, not that which follows convention for its own sake, or holds any aspect of the individual as an end in him- self rather than a means to an end. Above all, education recognizes the inherent dignity of the human personality. Those of us who have had a touch with you, in an advisory capacity, sincerely hope that the oppor- tunities for experiences we tried to provide for your educational growth will be reflected in the life you live after you have left this institution. Whether you go to college or choose some other area, please be reminded that education is a con- tinuous process. It begins with life and ends with death. We hope that you will be a credit to your home, school, community and nation, that you will ever face the challenging problems of life with faith, hope and determination to succeed, ever mindful of the supreme ruler, whom we should always consider as the inevitable partner in a full life. I congratulate you for the attainment of this milestone and wish for you continued success for a rich and full life. Sincerely, C.A. DeVillars, Principal Faculty nn A WE, THE SENIORS OF TODD-GRANT HIGH SCHOOL, BELIEVE FURTHER, THAT THIS SCHOOL COULD NOT BE GREAT WITHOUT THE CON - SCIENTIOUS AND CONTINUOUS EFFORTS OF THOSE WHO TRANSMIT ITS IDEALS AND PRESERVE ITS STANDARDS. But 'tis service true alone the world is seeking And by this and this alone we can repay 'Tis the answer, 'tis the end and all of living So we will work for Thee Todd-Grant for Aye. Now we pause awhile before we part, dear classmates Ah, the years that we have spent now seem so fair Now here's loving, longing, grieving, yearning waiting This grief would fond make fall a tear, make fall a tear! But 'tis service true alone the world is seeking And by this and this alone we can repay 'Tis the answer, 'tis the end and all of living So we will work for Thee Todd-Grant for Aye.
