ARCOUETTE HAS DEMONSTRATED HIS SINCERITY AND DEDICATION THROUGH HIS CONSTANT SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE DURING OUR FOUR YEARS HERE AT TIVERTON HIGH. WE CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR ALL YOUR HELP, MR. ARCOUETTE. We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Souza, a Middle School math teacher. He will be greatly missed by many. Vice Principal Mr. Charles Cummings ADMINISTRATION Superintendent of Schools Mr. Stanley Sincoski Principal Mr. Robert Poniatowski Mr. Alexander Malgieri, Director of Guidance The Guidance Department is concerned with human growth and development. It aids in the direction of the youth's emotional and scholastic growth. Facts concerning career and educational opportunities are provided by the Guidance counselors. GUIDANCE GUIDANCE mW k Business is by far the most popular college major of today. From accounting to typing, the THS Business Department pre- pares you for this challenging field. This year the department offered a new course for seniors replacing Typing 3 and Short- hand 2: Word Processing Machine Transcription. BUSINESS BUSINESS BUSINESJ Tiverton High School is one of the few schools in the state able to visit Trinity Square Repertory Theater. Through Project Discovery, the students become familiar with the theater and the plays they have read in class. The English Department is also involved with the Early Enrollment Pro- gram; seniors receive college credit for coursework. The Career English program also serves a valuable function. Through its resources speakers from the business and aca- demic sector visit classes to lead discussions and inform students of the opportunities their organizations offer. ENGLISH ENGLISH ENGLISH Mr. Peter D'AUesandro Miss Catherine Imbriglio Mr. Brian Larkin Ms. Diantha Quick Mr. Raymond Purdy Mrs. Annette Gagliardi Mr. John Connors This past year many new changes took place in the math department. For one it has become the home for a new computer lab, available for student use. Along with the lab came a new set of courses, developed entirely by the faculty of the math department. Computer Math 1 and 2 were extended math courses of the computer language. Now, THS took one more step towards conquering the world of computers. MATH MATH MATH MATH FOREIGN LANGUAGE FOREIG Mr. Edward P. Silva, Jr., Chairman FOREIGN LANGUAGE Since Mr. Levesque's retirement, many new changes have taken place in the Foreign Language Department. Mr. Silva is now the new department chairman and Miss Freitas has been hired as the new Spanish teacher. The Foreign Language Department is in the process of developing a new foreign language resource lab. This lab will serve the foreign language students as a library to help them im- prove their foreign language skills through the use of tapes and visual aides. corAIM AS GAliSS ' • y. f i T- ymgam v ' Zr Mr. Richard P. LaMothe, Chairman SCIENCE Upon entering this department one should always have a calculator in one hand and an eraser in the other. From biology to physics, one must have an eagerness to learn from either lectures or labs. The labs performed are actually continuations of lectures given previously, for it isn't until you actually experience the material that you fully understand it. SCIENCE SCIENCE SCIENCE SOCIAL STUDIES Besides their regular classroom schedule, the Social Stud- ies Department offers a variety of extra activities in which students can also participate. These include Close-Up and Insite. Close-Up teaches students more about the U. S. gov- ernment by taking a trip to Washington, D.C. in the spring of each year. Insite students go to Providence to study state government. This year many seniors had the opportunity to be filmed for the WJAR-TV 6 o'clock news. The class filmed was a consumer resource class that teaches students about consumer rights. OCTAL STUDIES SOCIAL STUE ROTC is a military organization which is intended to acquaint students with military life. Courses are taught in various military areas such as seamanship, history, and first aid. To help the students attain greater self-discipline and leadership, uniforms are required to be worn once a week. Students also have many chances to participate in various extracurricular activities such as the newspaper staff, the human rela- tions board, the color guard, the rifle and drill teams, and the military ball. All of these activites are designed to give the cadet increased opportunity to assume responsiblity. OTC HOME EC ROTC HON Mr. Wilfred Arsenault, Chairman KNS N The Industrial Arts Department prepares many of our students for careers in electronics, welding, drafting and carpentry. They are a service oriented department and offer a myriad of courses that are essential to the needs of todays craftsmen. The Phantasmagoria staff and student body would like to acknowledge and thank Mr. Arsen- ault for his many years of service at Tiverton High School. Good luck and enjoy your retirement. INDUSTRIAL ARTS INDUSTR The Physical Education Department: The Physical Education Department is the basis upon which everything else rests. Without one's good health, one cannot per- form adequately. The variety of the physical education department's program makes the course interesting, while not deterring from the basics. One does not have to be a full-fledged athlete to participate in this course. By just showing interest, one can gain much benefit. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Art, no matter how your observe it, will always show the expressive side of THS. Talent, beauty, and understanding will be ever present here from the beginning pencil drawing to pottery and paintings. Walking through the art department, one notices various styles and techniques in compositions. Here, dreams begin of becoming another Norman Rockwell or Leonardo DiVinci. The Band this year was accepted to play in the Walt Disney World Parade on their spring trip. This year they played in Somerset and in the annual Columbus Day Parade in Providence and, in both, received excellent ratings. The Band this year is worthy of our pride because this is the best band THS ever experienced. Keep up the great work! The chorus this year is also something to be extremely proud of. Not only did they receive excellent ratings in the Carousel Competition but also they sang in the annual choral festival. Congratulations are in order for this fantastic choral group. MUSIC ART MUSIC ART MU! Tiverton High is fortunate to have a Special Services Department providing the students with a library, resource learning center and a medical office. The students begin to learn how to use the research system in the library for the many term papers that must be com- pleted. The teachers of the learning center are a support for our students encouraging them in their studies. The nurse is available for first aid and the occasional emergency that must be handled SPECIAL SERVICES SPECIAL We would like to express our thanks to the support personnel. Their support has meant a great deal to us throughout the past four years. 1. Tiger Tales is a column written by Sherri Viveiros, Mary Ellen Gendreau, and Carolyn St. Michel which is featured in the Sakonnet Times weekly. This informs the community on the school activi- ties occuring throughout the year. The sound of a PA member can be heard at 7:40 AM when home- room begins. The primary job of this club is to wake up the school by reciting the pledge and morn- ing announcements. SASA PA CLUB SASA TIGER TALES 29 Senior Class Officers and The senior class this year was proud to have had four very de- pendable class officers. Not only could we rely on them, but also we could look to them for guid- ance. In the years to come, we shall always remember our senior class officers because of their con- stant pursuit to make this senior class the best THS has ever expe- rienced. Mr. Arcouette, on the other hand, has been with us for four years, always reliable and al- ways understanding. In times of trouble, he was there to console us but ever ready to fight back. In times of triumph, he was the first to say, I knew you could do it! . There has never been a better class advisor than Mr. Arcouette, nor will there ever be. They played in the Class C-l Division end- ing with an 8-1-2 record, their only loss in a heartbreaker against Hope. Outstanding se- niors were Quarterback Mike Brigham, Of- fensive Defensive tackle Don Lebreux, Of- fensive guard Defensive tackle Carl Destremps, Defensive nose guard Jim Pow- ers, Offensive end Bill Byrne, Tailback Steve Cabral, Center Marc Lavoie, and Defensive End John Garcia. Front row. J. Garcia, C. Destremps, B. Byrne, S. Cabral, M. Brigham, D. Lebreux, M. Lavoie, J. Powers Second row. R. Bishop, W. Sylvia, S. Mello, H. Kulpa, B. Sefrino, E. Mendonca, T. Carmody, J. GIRL'S SOCCER The girl's soccer team, coached by Mrs. Joan Davis, put forth a strong effort all season. The young team is looking forward to reg- building and growing, improving their record as their experience broadens. 105 SOCCER The 1985-86 soccer team concluded its season with a 4-6-4 record. Considering the preseason speculation, the team did well, coming in 5th place. With only 4 returning seniors- Chris Sundstrom, Steve Miles, Mike Farias, and Scott Laverdiere, the team was lacking experience. Despite this, the Ti- gers were able to make it a respectable season. With the help of young talent, they closed to within one goal of making the playoffs. Solid defense has been a trademark of Tiverton in the past. This year wasn't any different. But with the loss of 3 defense- men, next years team will have to concentrate mainly on the backfield. The offense and midfield will grow much stronger losing just one senior while gaining experience. Good luck next year! Go, Tigers, Go! Standing: Coach Cook, S. Mailloux, C. Sundstrom, S. Miles, D. Oliveira, P. Medeiros, M. Farias, S. Laverdiere, j. Panell, K. Trenholme, Asst. Coach Stinton Kneeling: T. Murray. W. Oliveira, R. Winegardner, S. Sundstrom, P. deSousa, D. Dufresne, N. Neville, D. They were playing in a new division. The Northern, facing off against teams all over the state. Their playoff hopes were dashed by having too many goals scored against them. 107 BASKET BALL The 1986 Basketball team had a good year. The young talent of Dave Oliviera, D. Gaugin and Jim Nightingale along with seniors Mike Brighams, Bill Bryne, Mike Miguel and Gary Motta's experi- ence were able to progress to the playoffs. Good Luck next season. GIRLS BASKETBALL The girls team is now playing in a tougher leagur, and under the di- rection of interim coaches McKin- non and Amaral, the team had a respectable season. Graduating se- niors Nancy Smith and Amy Costa will be missed, but the girls look forward to another exciting season in '87. Varsity: kneeling, A. Costa, N. Smith, standing Coach McKinnon, P. Elias, C. Costa, C. McGovern, D. Beaulieu, D. Medeiros, T. Lobo, T. Graves BASEBALL The 1985 Baseball team put to- gether a competitive year in their division. Seniors Tanya Char, Karen Patterson, and Sue Mailloux put in timeless work and effort for a great year and will be missed.
