Follow this simple recipe: Take scholastic achievement, athletic ability, artistic, dramatic and musical talents, and lots of school spirit. Mix with unique characters and you have a class with a lot of class. There’s more to Tiverton High School than the building itself Students Make the School! 2 Mr. Vincent M. Securo Mr. Securo is a figure well-known to Tiverton High students. In his years as Vice-Principal, he has acted as both a disciplinarian and a coordinator for school activities. His advice and guidance have been valuable to everyone. Before becoming Vice-Principal in August 1 97 1, he worked for the Bristol School Dept, as a physical education teacher. He has also served in the Marine Corps. We are dedicating this yearbook to Mr. Securo not only because this is his final year at Tiverton High School, but because we want to thank him for his help, dedication and caring. The Class of I 98 1 wishes Mr. Securo a healthy, happy retirement. 4 Dedication Mr. Raymond Purdy If we could choose one word to describe Mr. Purdy, it would be “courageous.” When Mr. Purdy became our adviser in 197 7, little did he know the task he faced. He soon caught on and proved to he a true friend and leader. His sincerity and dedication have helped guide us successfully through our four years at Tiverton High School. Words can never adequately express ourgratitude to you, Mr. Purdy. “God will not give any soldier ambition w ho is not willing to go into battle.” Anonymous Dedication S SENIORS! SENIORS! SENIORS! I.A. provides an enjoyable break from academic courses for some students, while for others it is the preparation for a future trade. Some of the projects students design and build include furniture and clocks, fireplace equipment, school showcases, and even the press box out on our football field. Many students have become very talented craftsmen and many will continue their vocational educations at trade schools. This year the Drama Club staged its major productions in November (“Murder on Center Stage“) and March (“Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”). In October, twelve members attended the New England Theatre Conference at the University of New Hampshire. The day was spent at workshops and at night, “Gypsy” was performed by the U.N.H. Drama group. Each spring, members of the Drama Club travel to New York City to see a Broadway play. Homecoming Events Excite Spirits The back-to-school blues were forgotten as School Spirit Week began; by Friday afternoon the school was nothing but wild yells and rowdiness as the annual Homecoming pep rally began. Seniors again showed superiority in most aspects of the pep rally, especially in the class cheers. Out of tradition was the incredible spirit and craziness of this year's underclassmen. Everyone cheered his way through one of the most spirited pep rallies in school history. Homecoming 99 It seemed too good to be true on that morning in October. Rain had been predicted all week for the day of the Homecoming car rally and game. Hopes for sunshine were dashed on Friday as it poured throughout the day and night the bonfire being cancelled for the second year in a row. Spirits had been high throughout the week, however, in anticipation of the final days of the Homecoming celebration. The pep rally was a triumph of spirit, yet the next day’s game was expected to be somewhat less exciting. Early on Saturday morning, October 4, 1980, the sun appeared as bright and warm as could he. The red, white, and blue banner flew brightly in the light breeze. People swarmed the field; alumni, students, teachers, and others who wanted to get out and enjoy a beautiful day and a great victory were there. Tiverton demolished Central Falls 32-0, and Melanie Sumner was crowned Homecoming Queen for 1980-81. The final celebration of the week was held at the annual Homecoming dance sponsored by the Student Council. Afterward, students were able to reflect upon a week filled with pride and enthusiasm for the school. It was truly a winning week — as is traditional. Top: At halftime. Students received their rings from a representative of the Balfour Company and later enjoyed listening and dancing to the music of “Carousel. Most students enjoy an opportunity such as this to get dressed in their best clothes, maybe con Dad into lending the car, and have a great time w ith friends. Junior Prom 105 Students Ring in the Christmas Season With mistletoe in the hallways, a concert bursting with holiday music, and the annual Snow ball Dance, Tiverton High was alive with the spirit of Christmas. The annual “Deck the Halls contest was held and, as usual, the Seniors won. After all, they’ve had more practice (try to tell that to an underclassman, though). The hallways were beautifully decorated in red and green and everyone was in good spirits anticipating a nice long holiday and plenty of Christmas cheer. A large turnout for auditions in January got energy flowing and spirits high. Stiff competition for parts made students work that much harder to make the play a success. 1 A S H brought many new students to the stage and changed the attitudes of many others towards Drama for the better. Mainly a fund raiser for the club's annual trip to New York to see a Broadway production, M A S H proved to be great fun rather than tiresome and tedious. Many of the scenes required only limited rehearsal, so the director found the large east no great problem (!) since she was only concerned with a core of approximately a dozen actors who carried the burden of the rehearsals. The dedication of the cast members and the closeness that grew between them helped to make M A S H a complete success. 110 “M A S H” Below: Members of the M A S H oast guide helicopters to the Tiverton High stage. Murder-Thriller Packed with Suspense The 1 980-81 season got off to a great start in November with the three aet murder mystery “Murder on Center Stage” by Jerry L. Twedt. Jeff Runner as David. Lori Bowers as Terry, and Ray Medeiros as Mike. Th« setting was an old college theater, present day. While rehearsing for Romeo and Juliet' one snowy evening, the students, director, and English Dept, were faced with several problems: they discovered the secret of the theater “ghost and the revengeful plot of the tormented janitor. After several close calls by the mysterious killer, the group handled the problem of the poor janitor with sympathy and compassion. Chilling suspense was never so great on the Tiverton High stage: strobe lights, mysterious ghosts, and other special effects filled the audience with fear and caused many to scream. Audience reaction to the play was highly rewarding for the dedicated, hard-working student actors and crew . Drama club members and friends celebrated another successful production at the cast party. Although most of the games were close and the Tigerettes tried their best to come from behind, they struggled to an over-all record of seven wins and eleven losses and a league mark of four wins and eight losses. 130 Junior Varsity: Back row: Coach Elaine Ferreira, Lorri Albert. Basketball 131 Spring Sports pring is a time when _____________ athletes have the opportunity once again to compete outdoors. It is also a time when the deserving athletes of our school are rewarded at banquets and assemblies for their achievements. . . . Four teams battled head-on at the Ocean State Championship in what was supposed to be a close track meet. That soon proved false when the Tigers took first place 1 in almost every event, crushing the second place team by 20 points. . . .East Providence was predicted to slaughter our volleyball team, yet our girls tried their best. They held on and won the second game, but the match went to the opposing team as the Tigerettes were outplayed by the skillful East Providence team. 132 Spring Sport . . . The Tigers pitched and hit their vvay to success. Their domineering play led them to the state championship game, but luck was against them as they were defeated by East Greenwich. . . . “Beat Portsmouth? No way!” everyone thought, but the Tigerettes outplayed their opponent and chalked up another win. The Tigerettes were a threat in their division, upsetting many teams during the 1980 season. Spring Spur I, 133 eam records fell almost as often as did opponents during the 1980 track season. A 3-1 year in the Ocean State Division, including the winning of the Ocean State Championship, stood as a testimony to the efforts of skilled, caring track athletes. Hard work and a positive attitude brought success to the Tigers. This hard work paid off for Mark Sylvia as he set new records in the 100-meter dash (10.7 sec.), 400-meter dash (54.4 sec.), 330 low hurdles (44.7 sec.), and was part of the 400-meter, 800-meter, and 1 500-meter relay teams that set new records. Also setting new marks were Joe Souza in the hammer throw (145.7') and Ed Cordeiro in the shot put (38'). Our relay team improved greatly, passing all previous records: 400-meter relay (51.3 sec.), 800-meter relay (1:49.4), 1500-meter relay (3:50.5). The girls on the track Records Fall With Track Success team, even though not able to compete in the local girls' track league, are not to be forgotten for their solid competition. Their dedication and stick-to-it attitude were greatly appreciated. The record told only part of the story in a season that all participants remember as being well above average. These athletes and their efforts helped those records fall as their pride rose. Coach Mackie says, “We gained respectability.” Above left: Tom Gendreau pulls up from behind, making good time in the 1 00-yard dash. Above right: Joe Souza gives his best effort for a good throw. Above right: Jim Miranda clobbers another shot which is good for extra bases. 136 Baseball Top: Pitcher Carl Reid had an outstanding season and played a key role in the Tigers' success story. Above: Mark VonVillas was a defensive stand-out and a constant offensive threat. The Tiverton Tigers' baseball team had everything a good --------- team needed — solid pitching, steady defense, explosive speed, clutch hitting, and a dependable bench. The Tigers put these tools to good use. As the season progressed, they had no mercy on their opponents as they chalked up win after win. Although the Tigers suffered a loss to East Greenwich in the state play-offs, they proved that they are a force to be reckoned with for many seasons to come. . ■ _ ■ T.H.S. Below: Graduation: the end . . . the beginning . . . TIVERTON | IIGH SCHOOL SOMEDAY ... YESTERDAY RETURNS fter the year has ended and you've grown old, or at least you feel that way, your yearbook will serve its purpose. As you turn the pages of the book, you will relive the days of your past. Those times. Those memories. You'll recall those things that made the year special — how you helped to make it special. Above left: We struggled against overwhelming odds, and won. Above right: As we venture into the future, we take with us all our memories of four sometimes frustrating, but mostly rewarding, years at Tiverton High School. Closing 191 1981 Phantasmagoria Phantasmagoria was printed by the Taylor Publishing Company. Dallas. Texas, using a 1 33 line inch s reen for half-tones and a 1 50 line inch screen for four-color photos. Comprised of 192 pages. Phantasmagoria was printed on 80-pound enamel paper. The cover consists of 120-point binder's board w ith a maroon Fabrikoid material onto which an original design was applied through the silk screen process; the applied color was ivory. The endaheets and eight pages of the introductory section were printed in four-color. Headlines were done in 24- point Bodoni bold-face type. For the clubs and organizations section, 36- poinl Carlton type was used and was set by the yearbook staff. A special spot color program of frost black and silver inks was also used in this section. Captions throughout the book are 8- point Bodoni. Body copy was set in 1 0- point Bodoni with 2-point line spacing. Approximately 48% of the student body purchased yearbooks at a cost of $1 5.00 per book. That charge covered almost 75% of the printing costs; the additional cost was covered by advertisement sales.
