Beginning in the Fall of ’76, seventh and eighth graders will be members of Tiverton’s new middle school. The Junior High’s youthful enthusiasm and spirit will no longer serve as a foil for upper- classmen’s gradually diminishing interest in school activi- ties. The class of ’76 wishes to thank the Junior High for lending support to senior events. 72 Advisor, Mr. Joseph Roderiques 73 74 ORGANIZATIONS 75 STUDENT COUNCIL Tiverton High's Student Council has been more active than the student governments of many other high schools in the state. The Student Council offers representation of student ideas and interests before the school administration. It also gives members the valuable experience of participating in the workings of a democratic form of government and of assuming the responsibilities necessary in maintaining this type of government. The effectiveness of the Student Coun- cil depends on the amount of support from administration, faculty, and students. Student Council projects this year included distributing Christmas gifts for shut-ins, making Christmas baskets, plan- ning School Spirit week in February, and building a Bicen- tennial sundial which was placed in a school courtyard. Stu- dent Council members also participated in inter-school vis- its, conferences, and studies. Council representatives are elected by each homeroom at the beginning of the year and must attend each meeting if their homeroom is to be represented. The officers were elected by the entire student body. President - Richard Humphrey Advisor - John McKinnon FRONT ROW, left to right: Colby Lundgren, Kathy Kronsberg, Franny Gross. Since its formation, the Society has worked to bring the accomplishments of outstanding students to the attention of their classmates, parents and the community at large. Nomination to the local Sakonnet Chapter is made on the basis of national guidelines. The student must maintain a minimum or average of 85 from the freshman year. Three other critera are used in determining final election and membership. Through teacher recommendation, each student must indicate leadership qualities, a sense of service to school and community and qualities of character becoming a mature scholar. Besides providing the students with information, the newspaper also invites administrators, faculty members, and students to air their views by either writing an article or a letter to the editor. Among the regular columns are: editorials, sports, puzzles, trivia, poems and jokes. In addition, polls are often featured to reflect student interest and opinion. School club news is often included in the newspaper. Cartoons and illustrations accompany most of the articles. As interest in the newspaper increases, the staff hopes to enlarge its scope and publish more frequently. 78 79 YEARBOOK STAFF The yearbook staff chronicles the year’s events at Tiverton High School and provides a record of the senior class. In its eighth volume, PHANTASMAGORIA is presenting a new look. Editor Scott DeVore, Assistant Editor Dave Levesque, and Layout Editor Carl Richardson with the staff and co-advi- sors Mr. D’Allesandro and Ms. Emond have worked to make the yearbook a more effective record of the year. The changes range from a more distinct heading style to a tighter format, but the most prominent difference in the widespread use of copy and captions which were absent in previous year- books. PHANTASMAGORIA 1976 tells the story with words as well as photographs for a more complete record of the year's events. Hampered at the outset by a three week teacher’s strike, the yearbook also experienced troubles brought about by the dif- ficulty in securing ads during a recession and declining year- book sales. Yet, primarily due to the advertisement and fund-raising campaigns directed by Financial Manager Kathy Bolduc, 1976 may also mark the first time in recent years the yearbook broke even. ■ Co-Advisors, Peter D’Allesandro and Kathleen Emond BACK ROW, left to right: Cheryl Silvia, Pam Smith, Eileen Timberlake, Scott DeVore, Dave Mello, Dave Levesque, Sue Davis, Carl Richardson, Virginia Pearce, Beth Perron, Terry Thomsbury, Linda Rodriques, Sandy Simmons, Dawn Oliveira, Louise Desilets, Linda Ainsworth, Denise Richards, Pam Felizberto. In addition to this production at Tiv- erton High School, the club also competed in the Drama Fes- tival held in Providence. Other club activities included attending plays. The Drama Club met once a week on Wednesdays when they were not in production. While producing the plays, they met whenever possible, usually one afternoon and several eve- nings a week, to rehearse. CLOSE UP is an opportunity for students, teachers, and gov- ernment officials alike to share perspectives on living gov- ernment. The basic philosophy behind CLOSE UP is that traditional methods of teaching government fail to provide insight into informal but important inner workings of poli- tics. CLOSE UP provides an alternative to present textbook methods by bringing participants into the center of events which effect their daily lives. For the last five years, CLOSE UP has brought students and teachers to Washington to view government firsthand. 1976 will mark the third year Tiverton High has participated in this program. During the week long session, CLOSE UP atten- dees attend seminars, meet politicians and others connected with government, and attend informal workshops where they discuss what they have seen and heard during the day. CLOSE UP is open to any student in grades 10, 11, or 12. This year, coupled with last year’s season, indicated football is on the upswing. Coach Bryan Babcock and his staff, offensive back coordinator Art Bell, defensive coordinator Moe Chan- try, and defensive line coordinator James Grauer, were extremely pleased with this year’s outcome. One of the highlights commented on was their come-from- behind win over Scituate. Down 14-0 in the first half, the Tigers fought back and won a 16-14 victory in the rain. This was a turning point for Tiverton,” commented one of the coaches. ”In the past, if we fell behind it was the tend- ency to just give up; this is not the case anymore.” Also mentioned was the exciting win over South Kingston. Tiver- ton was ahead 14-10 with a minute and fourteen seconds left, but the Rebels had the ball on the one foot line. In the long- est time frame on record, South Kingston had six plays to bring the ball in but were stopped by the Tigers’ outstanding defense. This victory enabled the Tigers to enter their first Championship football game against Warren. The Tigers lost but at least felt the excitement of participating in a champi- onship game. In addition to the outstanding season, numerous football awards were bestowed on the squad. The highlight of these awards was having Dennis Bouchard named to the Rhode Island Coaches Association All State Team as a defensive middle guard, another first in the school’s history. School for the Deaf 21 Lincoln School for Girls 44 Tiverton 43 This year’s girl’s varsity basketball team was typical of Tiv- erton teams throughout the recent years - short! The size of the players and of the enrollment made the going tough against other Eastern Division schools such as Middletown, Barrington, and Rogers. Tiverton's record of 4-15 reflected that difficulty. The squad was young, with a nucleus of six experienced players - three seniors, one junior, and two sophomores. Only the seniors started the season with varsity experience. Six sophomores, out for their first year of com- petition, played mostly J-V and helped out in varsity games when needed. The remainder of the J-V roster was filled by junior high girls who also played an eight game freshman schedule. The freshman team played a successful season ending with a record of 8-1. The three girl's teams had a combined thirty-five game schedule. The success of the junior high squad could be an indication of better things to come for the varsity squad. This year marked the end of four years of varsity competition for Kim O’Connor, a guard who ranks among the best of all Tiv- erton hoopsters. Graduation will also claim Michelle Robi- doux, a center who improved steadily throughout her three campaigns, and Donna Iamarone, a dependable guard as a starter or in the role of the squad's sixth player. 98 Left to right, TOP ROW: Coach Miss Geddis, Cathy Clegg, Rhonda Correia, Jean Fiola, Linda Proulx, Anne Fiola, Debbie Hedger. Paula Motta, escorted by Jeff Simp- son, was crowned queen. At the close of summer vacation, 10 select N.J.R.O.T.C. cadets took a 5 day cruise on the U.S.S. Dash (MS0428) to Charlestown, S.C. Stephen Bodell, Donald Filena, James Gomes, Christo- pher Hayden, David Simoes, Barry Szczupak, Bruce Perry, Carl Richard- son, Robert Tougas, and Wayne Wil- liams gained experience as a working crew during this September excursion. Christopher Hayden accumulated another week's experience in Novem- ber when he engaged in maneuvers off the Virginia Capes. In late November the 1st Naval district conducted inspection of the Tiverton Cadets. The freshman cadets spent a day at the Boston Science Museum naval yard to view the S.S. Constitu- tion, while other field trips were taken to the Newport Naval War College and the New London Submarine Base. Cer- tainly the year was not an uneventful one. 12 SPRING SPORTS 1975 marked the Tiverton Golf team’s first year of league competition, a season marked by an undefeated record. The Golf team won the Southeastern Division Championship. The Baseball team tied for second place in the Eastern Divi- sion with 8 wins and 4 losses. The Baseball team qualified for the State Play-offs but lost to Pilgrim, 4-3. The Girl’s Softball team also had a successful season, although not in league competition. The Softball team fin- ished the season with 11 wins and 3 losses. The Tennis team experienced some difficulties with 5 wins and 11 losses, but this was that team's first year of league competition and Coach Gerald Pietruska expressed optimism concerning future seasons in view of the fact that his team was primarily composed of Sophomores and Freshmen who will have more experience in coming seasons. The Volleyball team, in its second year of league competi- tion, had a winless season, as did the Track team in its first year of league competition. Both coaches expressed hope for coming seasons. Representing other teachers, Mr. Anderson, Ms. King and Mr. Aiello drew our attention to their conviction that a return to work was impossible until their promised con- tract had been granted. Mr. Wetterland, riding along with his co-workers’ beliefs, added that commitments should not be broken, but honored; however, the Tiverton School Com- mittee remained just as insistent on its goal of fiscal integ- rity. After three weeks of negotiating, tired strikers, like Mr. Borelli, were relieved when agreement was reached and classes resumed for all of us. 1 14 HOMECOMING The Homecoming Weekend began on Friday afternoon with a Pep Rally and the crowning of Miss Pigskin. Spirits were high at the Pep Rally, at the yearbook-sponsored smorgasbord, and at the Bonfire which followed. Satur- day morning’s downpour was not enough to dampen these spirits nor was the disappointment of tying the Home- coming game with Portsmouth, 0-0. Soccer experienced a winless season and Field Hockey won 4 out of 13 games on the varsity level and only 1 out of 9 games on the JV level. Both coaches were optimistic about future seasons, pointing out that their teams were composed mainly of new players. In Field Hockey, for example, 2 out of 3 players were playing their first season. A total of six groups performed: the Concert Band, The Glee Club, the New Music Project '76, the Jazz Band, the Male Chorus, and the Senior High Mixed Chorus. High- lights of the concert included the introduction of the popu- lar New Music Project '76 and the reorganized Male Cho- rus. This year's Male Chorus included three new vocalists and added a guitar and drums to the piano accompani- ment. RIGHT: The Concert Band performs at the opening of the concert. BELOW: The Glee Club. In the first game, the Fire Dept, chal- lenged the Police Dept., with the latter coming up on top. During the second game the Faculty defeated the Seniors, while the Police once again proved victorious in the play- offs. Perhaps the donkeys deserve the most praise for support- ing the activity so well. TOP: Diane Racine rides out onto the court in the Senior-Faculty battle. During the first four days students dressed in various unusual costumes as they participated in Mix and Match Day, Class Day, 58 er Day, and Slob Day. The Student Council, which sponsored the week, awarded cash prizes to Kathy Carreiro, Louise Desilets and Steve Sanford for their costumes on Mix and Match Day, Slob Day and 58'er Day respectively. The week culminated in an Athletic Day Assembly where students demonstrated their gymnastic skills, and classes competed against each other in a variety of events such as tug-of-war, potato sack races, and wheelbarrow races. With 7 wins and 17 losses, Tiverton’s small team managed to finish in 5th place in the ’’Class B Large” League. JV fin- ished with 8 wins, 14 losses and the Freshman team had the same record. In Girl’s Basketball, a relatively short and inexperienced varsity team man- aged to end with 4 wins and 15 losses. Next year promises to be better when the new players on the team move into their second season. The JV team won 1 out of seven games and the Freshman team finished 7-1. Each term students pooled their efforts which culminated in the presentation of plays to be viewed by other Senior English classes. During first term, ”Up the Down Staircase” was produced; during second term scenes from ”W. C. Field worthy, Foiled Again,” ”The Magic Shop,” and ”Alice in Wonderland” were pre- sented, and during third term, ’’The Still Alarm,” and ’’Sorry, Wrong Number” were per- formed. Most of our time is spent in the classroom where subjects are as varied as the pictures dis- played above. 131 YEARBOOK PRODUCTION UPPER RIGHT: Carl struggles to think of an original idea.
